Nearly ready to give up on this!! I read it in the 80s on holidays so it is probably from the 70s, about a man whose father has suicided and he is troubled by visions that involve the crucifixion, specifically hammering in the nails. He is getting help from a psychologist or psychiatrist to avoid him suiciding. Think it was American male author with a simple name eg John Robinson or similar

I read a book with this imagery. Can't remember much more about it than you posted, but there was a twist of some sort?
Bit more detail I can remember is that he finds out all the men in his family have suicided before they reached middle age. The flashbacks start as small pieces but get longer and more detailed and it seems his ancestor was the blacksmith who forged the nails and hammered them in (I think) at the crucifixion. Can't remember how it ended! i seem to remember him looking at his hands and saying/thinking "these hands"
hrmm....the one I'm thinking of, the guy wound up realizing he was judas, I do believe, so probably not the same book.
