Tolkien seems to be a very polarizing author---either you really love him or you hate him. For me, I was sucked in right from the beginning, and I have never stopped reading his work. I'm not a big fantasy reader in general, but I think it is his combination of high style and epic storytelling that is so evocative. I remember the first time I read LotR being struck by the immense depth in his history (or legendarium as he considered it) that you only got glimpses of in his most popular works. It always felt like real history to me (and in a way it was.)
You hear time and time again from Tolkien readers how each time they read one of his stories, they get something out it that they didnt get the first 10 times they read it. Thats what makes it such a joy to keep going back to---it stays fresh, and gives you something new every time you read it. I'm currently re-reading The Fellowship and loving it all over again....

The Song of Middle Earth: J.R.R. Tolkien's Themes, Symbols and Myths The song of middle earth is another book that I am interested to read on the subject of JRR Tolkien. Any thoughts on this one?

People have a tendency to skip over Tolkien's songs and poetry, which I will sheepishly admit I did as well when I first read them years ago. But there is something in his approach that I feel is quite different from other modern authors, and I believe he found them to be very important, that its worth an in-depth look if you have the time and inclination.

I currently in the midst of The Treason of Isengard: The History of The Lord of the Rings, Part Two, which is part of the History of Middle Earth series. I haven't read others from this line yet, as I am reading it as part of a book seminar, but I will gladly go back and read the earlier books in the series. If you are a major fan, it is very interesting to see how the storyline and characters developed and changed, and how he incorporated extant elements from his legendarium into the current story (which over time developed from a simple Hobbit sequel into what it would become). It is not for the faint-hearted though!

I started reading the LOTR trilogy during high school (like pretty much everybody else), and I love Tolkien's writing enough to consider him one of my favorite authors. It took me about ten years to decide to read Silmarillion and Hobbit (don't ask why, I really don't know). And that's about all I've read.

I'm currently on a break from him, but I was thinking Children of Hurin should be my next read. I'm still not sure though. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you're looking for something deep and a bit dark, either Children of Hurin, or the recently published Beren and Luthien are good picks. I also very much enjoy his children's stories, especially Farmer Giles of Ham and Roverandom, if you'd like something a bit lighter.

I want to read both of those, but as I have the COH sitting on my current list, I'm willing to buddy read with anyone who want to. I still have yet to return to the Silmarillion, but now that I've made it through Milton's Paradise Lost I have no excuses.

I was 15 when I bought The Hobbit (in Portuguese) then I couldn't stop and I have read the Portuguese translation of The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion,The Unfinished Tales and
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Other Verses. More recently I have read in English:The Hobbit, LOTR (these two books I try to read at least once every year), The Children of Húrin, The Tolkien Reader, Sir Gwain and the Green Knight, Beren and Lúthien and The Letters of J.R.R.
