Uau ! Such a fan !
Have a good reading. :-D

You hear time and time again from Tolkien readers how each time they read one of his stories, they get something out it that they didnt get the first 10 times they read it. Thats what makes it such a joy to keep going back to---it stays fresh, and gives you something new every time you read it. I'm currently re-reading The Fellowship and loving it all over again....

I currently in the midst of The Treason of Isengard: The History of The Lord of the Rings, Part Two, which is part of the History of Middle Earth series. I haven't read others from this line yet, as I am reading it as part of a book seminar, but I will gladly go back and read the earlier books in the series. If you are a major fan, it is very interesting to see how the storyline and characters developed and changed, and how he incorporated extant elements from his legendarium into the current story (which over time developed from a simple Hobbit sequel into what it would become). It is not for the faint-hearted though!

The Hobbit
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
The Children of Hurin
And trying to make my way through
The Silmarillion
As a side note, I highly recommend the audio version of The Children of Hurin read by Christopher Lee. It is excellent.

The Hobbit
Unfinished Tales
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
The Silmarillion
Tales from the Perilous Realm
The Children of Hurin
The Book of Lost Tales 1
The Book of Lost Tales 2
The Lost Road
The Shaping of Middle-Earth
The War of the Jewels
The Peoples of Middle Earth
The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun
..and I'm thinking about buying and reading the letters.

Thanks Anne Marie, I will definitely check out your blog! So far I've only read The Treason of Isengard, so I am a bit out of order, but I too find the material fascinating. You learn some much about both his writing style, and the evolution of the characters and story lines. I have to stay I am happy Trotter didn't survive to the published text.

I'm currently on a break from him, but I was thinking Children of Hurin should be my next read. I'm still not sure though. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you're looking for something deep and a bit dark, either Children of Hurin, or the recently published Beren and Luthien are good picks. I also very much enjoy his children's stories, especially Farmer Giles of Ham and Roverandom, if you'd like something a bit lighter.

I think I prefer deep and dark Tolkien to light and relatively happy. Thanks a lot!
