Scott | 401 comments I didn't think it was much of a spoiler either but some people get offended by the smallest hint of things that happen in a book. I once posted something that you would have found out just by reading the synopsis of the book and someone said that it was a spoiler. I just didn't want anyone to get mad at you for posting it.

Jane (shoxford) | 65 comments Ah ok, thanks Scott-I always try not to put anything that would ruin the story up and I think I've got the hang of the (view spoiler) thing now too.

Not just me then Mary? I thought the series as a whole added a layer of depth to the other SK novels I've read and I enjoyed finding the odd reference back to another book but I just didn't think it was amazing overall. Perhaps it's the genre, I don't really like fantasy generally so that could be why.

It's not so much being "offended" as it is trying to provide a spoiler-free environment for all of our members.

When spoilers go unchecked (whether minor or "not much" or major), there becomes a two-fold problem. One, someone that hasn't yet read the book in discussion has their reading experience spoiled. Or two, knowing that possible spoilers abound, they avoid the threads altogether, which decreases group participation.

Trust me, I have better things to do than police all of the GR threads for lapses in consideration or thought. It's not a witch hunt, and nobody is picking on anyone.

That said, thanks for covering the spoiler-free atmosphere, Scott. And thanks for timely correction, Jane.

Dustin Hi, Jane!

Thank you. I don't really think that's a spoiler, either..

I'm sorry you didn't love the series..

Trish (zianeu) I felt a little let down by the ending, too. Something... felt off. The last book is the only one I've only read once. I should probably remedy that and maybe I'll be ready for it to end like it did after all.

It was like it DID add layers to the other books, but at the same time the book winked at us all and said "Well, you could read it that way, but really... they're just shadows."

Jane (shoxford) | 65 comments S'ok.

I dunno, I didn't like the series that much to be honest. There were some elements I did like: (view spoiler) but I didn't like (view spoiler)

I'm glad I've read the series because I can see why it's important to other SK books to an extent and I'm glad I know what it's about but I can't really see me re-reading it ever.

Andrea (serialreader13) Yes the ending was a bit of a let down....but as King states himself...the story is about the journey itself, not the ending. And I very very much enjoyed the journey King took me on when reading the series

Linda Mallet (lmallet) I read all his novels up to From a Buick 8, except for The Dark Tower Series. Does anyone remember the Castle Rock newsletter, it was great. It was discontinued in the late 80's or early 90's. from this newsletter I was able to purchase the first 2 Dark Tower's limited editions in hardcover. I never intended to read them, they were collectors items.

I mostly read mystery thrillers now, I'm wondering if I will enjoy this series.

I totally think you will enjoy the series. The first nook can be daunting, but push through. WHen you read the 2 book, it will make sense. It is definitely about the journey, with this series. :)

Randy I read as far as Wizard and Glass...and was so disappointed that I turned in the whole series of books for a credit at my favourite used book store. For me, the books were simply too long and uneven and the overall quest just didn't hook me. Yuck!

ElleEm | 260 comments When I read through the series the first time I didn't really appreciate Wizard and Glass. It did feel like it was too long and I thought it didn't advance the story. On my second read I feel that this book adds to the richness of the overall story. We really get to see a huge part of what shaped Roland into the man that he is.

mrbooks | 1469 comments Oh Randy I am sorry you didn't like it and quite after the Wizards and Glass. It was a pronominal series.

Kev (Kevtheaudiobooklistener) | 21 comments One of the best series of books ever in my humble opinion.
Sorry to hear that you didn't like it.

Kandice | 4387 comments It took me a long time to read the series after many false starts, despite reading every other word King wrote as soon as it became available. It had weird correlations with incidents in my life.

Becky finally got me to read it through and I have since read it numerous times, including one listen through. I love it. It has become a story very close to my heart, and despite the few lulls, it's overall a wonderful and epic tale.

NOT for everyone, though. I know that.

mrbooks | 1469 comments So like Roland you are following the path of the Tower for all eternity.

Kev (Kevtheaudiobooklistener) | 21 comments There's one thing I really didn't like about the series. I don't think it's a spoiler, but I'll not mention it just in case. Apart from that, I love it so much. It does seem to divide opinion though.

mrbooks | 1469 comments If you are talking about what I think you are talking about, I said "no way when I got to it, you have got to be joking after all this?"

Wish he wouldn't have done it. Thought it was ridiculous.

If it wasn't in the last book then I can't imagine what it is. Can you suggest it using the spoiler tags

message 72: by Nick (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments As for W & G, I'll admit there was a lot of extraneous material in the book (the wizard and all). But Susan Delgado etc... I found that an absolutely riveting story.

Kandice | 4387 comments Nick wrote: "As for W & G, I'll admit there was a lot of extraneous material in the book (the wizard and all). But Susan Delgado etc... I found that an absolutely riveting story."

Me too, Especially on subsequent rereads. Same with the comics. I get to a point where I just can't get enough of that world.

mrbooks | 1469 comments it just never ends, the story is timeless

Terri | 41 comments ive not long finished the gunslinger and honestly i dont know if i want to continue on with the series. ive been wanting to read it for a long time now and beingnon holidays for 6 weeks i wanted something epic to read. I was just so disappointed with it and not sure if i want to continue or not.

Please do continue. The subsequent books are much better than the first one.

Kev (Kevtheaudiobooklistener) | 21 comments I was talking about that kandice. Seems like I'm in the minority on that one, but I stand by it. No Stephen King pun intended ☺

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments ElleEm wrote: "When I read through the series the first time I didn't really appreciate Wizard and Glass..."

I agree completely, ElleEm. When I was first reading the series, W&G was my least favorite. I was too excited to advance the main plot to appreciate all that backstory. But I find that I appreciate it more every time I reread it. Its part of why I'm glad I had read the series before Wind Through the Keyhole came out- taking another long detour from the main plot right after W&G would have driven me insane with impatience, and I wouldn't have appreciated WTtK in exactly the same way I didn't appreciate W&G.

mrbooks | 1469 comments I agree with you Nicole

To true and that takes real courage, it is hard to face your faults and even harder to publicly admit them for the whole world to see.

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments mrbooks and Kandice, yes, I definitely agree. Much respect to him for not pulling any punches.

Kandice | 4387 comments I spoke to Jae Lee, the GN illustrator for The Dark Tower books, and he was talking about how stressful it was to get these characters just right, and that no matter what, he pissed off a lot of fans. He sounded almost... irritated that the film makers didn't need to worry about that at all.

mrbooks | 1469 comments That only shows how hard it is to please everyone, correction it is impossible to please everyone best just to please yourself and in this case the Author of the books.

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments Kandice wrote: "I spoke to Jae Lee, the GN illustrator for The Dark Tower books, and he was talking about how stressful it was to get these characters just right..."

That's really interesting, Kandice! And agreed, mrbooks, no one would ever be completely satisfied, so best to stress as little as you can about it.

My thoughts exactly! I really disliked, almost hated, W&G the first time. I was like, "seriously?! I don't care! back to the story already!" My second time through the series, W&G is my favorite book of all! I've guided a few friends on the DT journey since then and my best advice is to take it slow, enjoy the ride. If you rush it you will regret it and King will give you a good ass chewing!

Some of these books I wish would never end.

mrbooks | 1469 comments I was listening to the series on youtube but had to quit after The Drawing of the three because over half of the waste land was missing as there is some dispute over the reading that was on the net. I guess I am going to have to purchase the series to listen to it properly. I agree Nick just when you are getting right into the meat of the book it ends. As Oliver said in Oliver Twist, "Please sir I want some more"

Nicole Power (nicolepower) | 295 comments mrbooks wrote: ""Please sir I want some more..."

This is truest thing I've ever read. I remember the first time I finished the Dark Tower series- that ending blew my mind and the only thing I wanted immediately was MORE. I would have read a whole new 7-book set right then (and then another 7, again and again, ka is a wheel, say thank ya!). Since I can't have that, I just settle for re-reading it every few years.

But that's what got me excited about the DT movie, the fact it's meant as a sequel rather than straight adaptation. MORE :).

mrbooks | 1469 comments Please that is only a teaser we want a full 3 to 4 or more hour movie LOL

message 92: by Tim (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tim Gunter | 120 comments I can kind of understand why some people disliked the ending. When I read it I already had the ending 'spoiled' for me, so I knew what I was getting into. Because of that, I was able to pick up on the foreshadowing and all of that, so when I got to the ending it felt right. If I didn't know? I probably would have considered it just another crappy end to a great King read.

Matthewcross87 wrote: "i still can't believe its going to be an hour and ten minute movie"

Pretty sure it's supposed to be about an hour thirty-five. Even so though, if there was ever a movie that needed to have a 2-2 1/2 hour running time, it's this movie.

I'm typically fine when a movie is less then 2 hours. Some movies go far too long but I was surprised to learn that the Dark Tower only has a 90 minute runtime. I had assumed it would go at least 2 hours if not longer.

Run time isn't something that bothers me if it fits the story. I'd rather have a nice shorter movie that flows well than long one I'm looking at my watch during wondering how the movie is still playing. It just feels weird to me that a movie pulling material and themes from a full 7 book series will be about 1 1/2 hours, while It will be over 2.
