Crystal | 12 comments Hi Maria!
I wanted to ask you where you got the idea for Inside Out? I just recently read it and I loved it. The story line kind of reminded me of this movie I saw called The Cube. It's kind of a crazy thriller type movie but it reminded me of the layout that you wrote describing Inside. :-)

Maria V. Snyder (maria_v_snyder) | 108 comments Hello Everyone! I was really honored that Soph started this group. I won't read or lurk in the other discussion threads because I want you to be honest and not worry about me :)

As for the questions...

Soph - When I started POISON STUDY, I was thinking it would be one book and the story just kept going. I just wrote a blog about the inspiration for the Study books - you can go here to read a more detailed answer: http://www.blackgate.com It was posted November 3 - so you might have to scroll down a bit.

Crystal - I dreamt the idea for INSIDE OUT! I dreamt the whole story, the world, the characters, the Pop Cops, and even the twists! When I woke up, I wrote it all down before I could forget it. I haven't ever done that before and haven't since - I wish I could remember what I ate for dinner that night ;)

 Soph - Lock&Key | 58 comments Mod
that is so cool how you dreamed the idea that would be like an out of body experence :)

this question is about the glass series, its kinda more about your writing style but still.....

how did you Define Opals character, i thought that she was going to be like Yelena but she was so different and that was really good. How did you do that?

message 9: by Jade (new)

Jade Alexia | 29 comments Awww I miss Yelena! She is soo great!! But it's over :'(

 Soph - Lock&Key | 58 comments Mod
I know!!!!!!!!! I loved her character.

message 11: by Jade (new)

Jade Alexia | 29 comments Me too :-(

message 12: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 12 comments lol, Maria that is awesome! I read that Salvador Dali did the same thing. He would leave a canvas by his bed and go to sleep. Then when he woke up he would paint what he saw in his dreams. Although I like the result of you dream better Inside Out was an awesome book! :-)

Maria V. Snyder (maria_v_snyder) | 108 comments Yelena may be on vacation, but she's not gone all together :) Do you know about my free email newsletter? I send updates about the books, my schedule and something fun. I'm sending a short story called, Ice Study (with Yelena and Valek) for my fun section right now. My newsletter subscribers read the story first, before I put a link up on my website in the short stories section. You can sign up for the newsletter here: http://www.mariavsnyder.com/news.php (go all the way down to the bottom of the page) and No spam – ever! If you do sign up, let me know via email once you've gone through the process and I'll send you the first seven parts of Ice Study.

Soph - When I first started writing about Opal, I had a hard time. The first couple of chapters she sounded and acted just like Yelena! I had to get Yelena out of my head and make her stop telling Opal what to do and say - sort of like an exorcism ;) What I did was go back to when Opal's sister had been kidnapped and to Opal's whole ordeal of being kidnapped and used and I imagined what that would have been like for her. Only then could I write her story.

I did worry that Opal and Yelena would be too much alike, but from your comments it sounds like I didn't :)

Thanks Melissa and Renee for answering for me :) Annabel - they're right, my next two books are Storm Watcher this month and Taste of Darkness at the end of December. Then it's a new Study book with Yelena and Valek to be published late 2014 and two more Study books to follow every 9 months (I hope!).

I enjoy meeting and talking to my readers - I get emails, but it's nice to put a face to a name and talk about books.

Yes - when no one shows up! Or the store is empty - then it's a very long two hours :)

Maria, if every one of your characters were on death row (all scheduled to die at the same time) and you could only save one which character would you save and why?

message 36: by Jessie (new)

Jessie R (magiccircle) | 28 comments Jen, can anyone answer?
I mean.. As well as Maria answering?

I'd save Valek a couple of days before the scheduled time, and he'd find a way to save the rest ;)

message 39: by Jessie (new)

Jessie R (magiccircle) | 28 comments I was totally thinking along the same lines as Renee, but then I changed my mind--Yelena should be saved!

She knows almost as much about fighting as Valek, (especially since they've been together for a while) but she's also a master of magic and a Soulfinder!!
She could just inhabit the executioner's soul and make him/her stop.
She also has much experience, getting out of very tight spots!
She's kickass!!

..and if worst came to worst and her companions were executed, she could guide her friends souls toward a happy afterlife:))

That's a nasty question Jen! I wouldn't save any of them, they're all more than capable of saving themselves!

But who would you give a helping hand to?

message 43: by Maria (new)

Maria V. Snyder (maria_v_snyder) | 108 comments Becky - my characters are my children - I raised them, taught them everything I know and now it's time for them to stand on their own ;) Plus I couldn't play favorites.

Okay - having said all that - I'd agree with Renee and give Valek help because there would be no way he'd leave the others to die.

I don't know how - okay? Happy now I'd admitted it? I can do it in Word, but not on Goodreads. How do you do it?

I didn't think you could delete another person's comment!

I've a number of favorites right now, but if you twist my arm (and I know YOU would ;) I'd say Illona Andrews's Edge series. I really enjoyed the first two books, On the Edge and Bayou Moon - the female protags are strong, but not annoying (meaning they're not so strong they refused help from everyone), and the men, well are hot! Just don't tell my husband. ;)
