I didn't know magic applied to Steampunk. I thought Steampunk was the whole "airplanes and trains and other wacky technological progressions in a historical setting." Interesting.

G.A Aiken- dragon kin series =how to drive a dragon crazy, damsel on distress. both heroines are AM whilst the males are White.
SHELLY LAURENSTON is g.a aiken. so this is her other ones PRIDE series- beast behaving badly, the beast in him is whereJessica is the main character with smitty. BW/WM both. GO FETCH! is funny! and hunting season is good as well. let's just say I'm.a HUGE fan of her work :) belong to the night is short and sweet. she is such an amazing author and her sense of humor is SKCDMCKDKXMSSLCMEKCODKDVODLVF!!! meaning hilarious! I always have to remind myself that the male characters are exactly that. book characters. hahaha very hard .
THEODORA TAYLOR is great as well. the heros are ALWAYS jaw dropping *drool*. her Russian billionaire ... omg my heart was having its own little party(sorry not paranormal)hahaha her Viking werewolf is also great.

It's IR and it is GREAT! Alex Voinov is a wonderful writer who was inspired by the whole RaceFail 09 fracas to diversify his characters. Kendras is awesome and the world-building top-notch. It is M/M so you've been warned, lol.

Well this is what I would call a surprise! interracial read . The heroine, America Jones is biracial. Well, technically she's a quadroon since her grandmother was black. The series (so far there are 3 books) is Urban Fantasy/Steampunk.

I am midway through the first book. Fair warning, this doesn't read very "romancey." Sex and relationships are not treated reverently and in fact Phaeton Black starts out as a bit of a man-whore. But my understanding is that he and America do end up together and by the third book at least they are married and pregnant. But it definitely lands more on the UF/adventure side than the romance side. Also, while I would not classify this as erotica, the sex is explicit.

Well I've been paying attention to what reader say they wanted. I wrote a paranormal interracial book called featuring a Chinese Hero and a biracial woman Black/Cherokee and in comparison to my other new books debut, it don't seem to be doing as well. So when you say paranormal, does that not include ghost? If it does? Could the problem be the fact it's historical? The male being Asian in this situation during this period? A Western ghost story? The only way to know what to continue writing is through feedback or sales? So I'm asking not advertising.

@Shiree: I actually like this book. I think it being a historical may cause some to balk, since American history has been far from kind to PoC. Your opening chapter illustrates that fact painfully well.

@TheFountainPenDiva: Thank you. I was thinking that was the reason too, but it would be a shame if people don't even try to read outside the comfort zone. I did a lot of research as you might have seen by the references I listed. I also think it was a good story if I say so myself. I hear complaints about Interracial romances having no substance or stories like you find in the regular mainstream historicals and contemporaries, so I've tried to do that in my books. Also except for one book that was a short with a publisher, none of my books are those 79 to 140 pages I've been purchasing.

Thank you. As long as I know a handful of people were pleased and enjoyed the story I will continue on my chosen path. I was just concern with the 2 ratings I see on Goodreads. Thankfully it was higher on Amazon, so this is why I ask this question to the Goodread readers who seem to be harder to please.

Like I've said, historical IR's can be somewhat problematic, especially if we're dealing with American history. I really wish authors, both IR and mainstream, would stop being so limited. The ancient world is just filled to bursting with great ideas for romance. Ancient Egypt is so painfully obvious as is Nubia. Even the Middle Ages can be utilized as an IR setting because of the Moorish occupation of much of Europe, especially Spain. And the Moors were African. Heck, how about Ancient China, Japan or India or Meso America. The Aztecs and the Mayans? So many great stories just waiting for the telling. And they don't even need to take place in a historical setting. Steampunk would be awesome!

Yes, Well you preaching to the choir because I know to not be sterotypical about the possiblities of Multicutural blending throught out centuries. Thank you Nadine. However that is what PenDiva and I was discussing the reason this book wasn't doing as well in sale must be the fact it is Amer. History.

It's a Paranormal Western, but people assume there isn't a Happy ever After because it's American history, or because of the slavery aspect. The truth is a reference to slavery and racism is in the book because I can only write a different aspect of history, not change it or it lose the realism that is expected in Historical Romances.

My story isn't about slavery. It is about a Black/Indian woman who spent her childhood in a travelling circus, until her mother deciding she want to settle in one place so her daughter can be educated along with children of a family that desperately wants her husband to train their horses.

This is just the background of what makes her who she is. How she comes to be in San Francisco living on what is now know as Alcatraz searching for a her missing Chinese childhood friend from her days in the circus is what the book is about. It's not about slaves on a plantation just because it happened in America.

There was a lot of things going on in America besides slavery, such as the Chinese immigration during the gold rush seeking out ways to gain wealth to help their families back home while purchasing up property like other folks during that time in the growing San Francisco.

This is a book dedicated and written about the Black women of the Wild West and that is my lead female character.

If you decide to give it a shot, I promise you want be disappointed. There is a mystery, and there are paranormal elements to help solve the mystery happening on "Alcatraz". A lot of people don't realize that first there was a military prison fort and after it was abandon it was sold and then nothing is really written about it until it is purchased to be a state prison. During that empty time in history I utilized it and it's inhabited by a Chinese family with an export/import business and a dark family secret.

Most of all there is a love story between two people, a Chinese Medical Doctor that practices western and eastern medicine in Chinatown, and a Black Indian female tracker who works for the government as a tracker on a personal mission and as a private tracker for the missing people of color no reputable business will take on. I'll stop here or I will give away clues that you need to discover on your on during your journey through the western wilds.

Hi Shiree, I have read quite a few of your novels and enjoyed them. I really tried to read this book because you were so passionate about it and I love the subject. However I have to say that I could not do it.

I have read every Beverly Jenkins book and I can not help but compare due to the time period. To me a Beverly Jenkins novel does not ignore the race issue however she has her protagonist tell there story in a practical and humane way. She has white people who are villains but she also has people who are just trying to survive like everyone else and are not stuck on race. Her books are uplifting to me and left me feeling that, yes, people dealt with horrible racism however they survived and they did it with dignity. Is it a stretch and not really accurate? Maybe. But at its heart it is a romance novel.

I really did like your heroine however the detailing of the atrocities of slavery, the good ol' boy sheriff, and her mother's story within the first chapter was just too much for me.

As a black women I KNOW these stories but do I need them detailed in a romance that I am reading? No. I personally don't. To me Beverly has a good balance of telling her story with historical accuracy but not letting it overshadow the story line. I really didn't get that from the little bit that I read of your book. Like I said I am a fan of your work and please forgive me if the sample I read was not a true representation of what the story was about.

So to help answer your question I personally would love a novel that had paranormal elements with a Asian hero. I am all about that! I just can't stand the "historical accuracy" of having a lynching, "git outta my town by sunrise", and breeding WOC to serve greedy white men all within the first 5% of a book. I would hope that someone of your heroines ability and profession would know about this and prepare for it in a better way that "grin and bare it". Maybe if she had rode into town at night and scoped the place out and talked to people of color in town? Just my two cents.

Thank you for the feedback. I understand. I am surprise with it being such a small part of the story. The Sheriff was scene setting of the times and the feel of arriving in the west, after getting her to the Island he is no longer a character you have to continue to contend with.

She couldn't come to this town and get the answers she needed to find her missing Chinese friend by asking the people of color for they could not provide her with what she needed. She was capable of bringing down that sheriff but she wasn't couldn't be a tracker for the government when they needed her if she wasn't capable of taking orders or being respectful regardless of the fact she rather kick his backside.

But that would have realistically got her thrown in jail and been a waste of time in the story because she needed answers and luckily she found it in the first person she met that happen not to want her to linger in town considering she was Black woman with the right to carry a gun in a town were people of color could not carry a gun. That is why he picks on her in the first place, not just because she was a Black coming into San Francisco.

Rain needed an "in" to the Chinese community of San Francisco in order to get her information and the sheriff provided that for her. His part ends there in Chinatown.

The incident at the wedding chapel though painful to tell made her the woman she was. It was a part of her life she never spoke of until she meets the doctor. She has horrid burn scars on her body and he has seen them, and out of his kindness and the infinity she feels for him she shares her painful story. It was one chapter of a flashback of her life and how she come to be alone in her chosen profession. I started to tell it, but because I had read and study so much on the lives and survival of the Black daughters of the west, I would have been ashamed if one of their ancestors had picked up my book and saw that I made light of the time period. I list books for reference for my readers which is a good hint to readers...if a writer bother to list references then she used realism in the book.

Still I can't say my story is overshadow with racial overture since race wasn't the issue at all. The entire story shifts into this paranormal investigation of people who are going missing in the San Francisco area, majority is Chinese and no one cared enough to find out why. Rain does and she proceeds with the help of the doctor to find out what happen to the missing people because she figures she will also find out what happen to Mei.

I was prepared for this book to not be liked by everyone. It won't be the first time. I had a lot that didn't like my transgender male leading man story in Dirty Little Secrets Anthology. But it was a love story I needed to tell.

I admire Beverly Jenkins, I have read her books also and the way she approach the west makes for a wonder read, it's her style, the thing that makes her different. I can not immolate I can only continue building on my style that makes readers seek my books out.

My entire career has been built on writing outside the box. I don't know if my readers will allow me to make a change now even if I wanted to, but never fear in the mixture of the serious books, there will still be something for you in the future to entertain you again I'm sure.
