Marymack | 3 comments Novel is psychological thriller published in the US in the very late 70s or very early 80s.
Set-up … Protagonist is an average Joe with an average life, OK job, nice wife, probably no kids, two dogs, house in the burbs. He commutes on a train. One day, for no apparent reason, he commits an atrocity (asker thinks the atrocity is that he kills the dogs).
Sent for therapy, he develops a fixation with the psychiatrist (male). Believes that the shrink is the leader of some community in a remote mountain kingdom. Falls in love with shrink’s assistant/wife/girlfriend, and thinks she’s somehow being held captive in the remote mountain kingdom.
Steals something from the shrink (could be some magical talisman; could be just a bit of the shrink’s chandelier).
Apparently, reader left in doubt for much of the book as to whether this is all happening in the protagonist’s head.

I have been looking for this book for years. Posted what I could remember of it on this site and LT months ago. Have not been able to visit either site for a while. A few days ago however while browsing LT I was directed to 'another site'. Couldn't believe my eyes. Just ordered it for the princely sum of £1.11 plus P+P. There are are few copies to be found, some ridiculously cheap and others criminally expensive. For those who have not read this book ..it's well worth searching for. :D!
