Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments Finished The Voyage of the Dawn Treader last night. It was enjoyable, yet there wasn't much of a plot to it.

Now I've just started The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett.

message 52: by Chris (new)

Chris Decker (steppenfloyd) I just finished Krondor The Betrayal (The Riftwar Legacy, #1) by Raymond E. Feist and now I am reading Flight of the Nighthawks (The Darkwar Saga, #1) by Raymond E. Feist .

Robin (robinsullivan) | 629 comments I'm still reading Way of Kings - going a bit slow on that. Also picked up a couple of free kindle reads - Gift of Fury (indie author - has a lot of typos in it but the story is good -very Jim Butcherish). Also got...The Paradise War by Stephen Lawhead - I've never read anything by him but it was free to a good excuse to give him a try.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it - was it a matter of being audio? I really enjoyed reading the book - it was thick - but for me at least it moved fast.

No. The narrator was fine. I found the writing pedantic, the characters cardboard and the research abysmal. His descriptions of cathedral architecture seemed to come from travel brochures. I'm a huge fan of Dorothy Dunnett, the queen of historical fiction so I found this book to be pulp fiction. Not that I'm above a little of that now and then but not in a supposedly serious work. Follett wrote a great thriller with Eye of the Needle. He should stick to that IMO.

Sarah I've had so many unplanned reads this months, that I'm quite surprised at myslef. that's mostly because i was on the roads quite a lot, so I had more time than usual for books and audios.

SO this months so far was:
Priestess of Avalon
War of the Twins
Coraline
Never Let Me Go

And I'm currently reading Firebird by Mercedes Lackey, and The Crown Conspiracy By Michael J. Sullivan.

Out of interest how do you find reading two works of fiction at the same time. Do you read one in the morning and one at night?? Should they be different genres? I am curious and I guess I am considering reading two at a time.

I cannot do it. I cannot read even on fiction another non-fiction in parallel.

I am 1/4 into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Not bad so far, except long description of Henrik's relatives...a little bit like reading Torah..:) Who gave birth to who..

I do this all the time. Wherever I am, I want to be reading. Basically, whatever is handiest gets read. I don't have any problems picking a story back up, so long as I don't take months (a few weeks is not usually a problem). Most of the time, though, I'm just reading two books at once, usually of the same genre or similar anyway.

For a long time I was very strict about reading only one thing at a time, but gradually I started to get used to the idea of reading two, rarely three, books at a time.
The books I read are either ones I own or take from the library, or get an audio version of. I usually read one of my own books when at home, and carry the other two with me to college. Presently, I spend more time at college than at home, so having a book around is an absolute necessity.
I thought reading two things simultaneously might spoil the experience somewhat, but nothing of the sort happened.
I guess it simply depends on the kinds of books you choose to mix. For me, they have to be different in atmosphere, or my expectations of them, and not neccesarily different genres.

Lyle Kimo Valdez (eskablong) I'll be reading The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan . WoT 1-13

message 66: by Tina (new)

Tina Stanton (tinastanton) I'm about 3/4's through The Hunger Games and I can't put it down.

message 67: by Rrragan (new)

Rrragan I typically do have two novels underway at the same time. The difference is on is a traditional dead tree version that is read at home and the other is an audio book that is listened to during the commute. This mix seems to work fine for me.

I want to start rereading these books frm the start before I pickup the last 3 books because it's been years since I read them. Love the story but it's too long LOL ;)

Yeah, it's kinda long. But after I read the Sword of Truth my friend said this was way better. :D and he just got The Towers of Midnight so I can just borrow off of him. ^__^

Nita (gillnit) I started Daughter of the Forest. This book has been on my to-read list for ages.

message 76: by Lyle Kimo (new)

Lyle Kimo Valdez (eskablong) I'm gonna stop reading Wheel of Time at book 4, The Shadow Rising (Wheel of Time, #4) by Robert Jordan . I'm gonna read another book first before I go on in the series. :D Maybe The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins

I liked the first one best of all, but I really enjoyed the second as well. The third one I found slightly less good, a bit repetitive perhaps, but special atill. I think each could work greatly as a standalone.

message 85: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Broadwell (nikkibroadwell) I have read that entire series and loved it! also the Bredei Chronicles...right now I'm reading another of Juliet Marilliers--Heart's Blood--a bit different than her others and labeled as a fantasy romance--I like it. After this I plan to read one of the books on my Goodreads list--maybe the one that is going to be discuseed in Dec.

message 86: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) Thanks Sarah, Nikki, and Janny! I definitely plan on reading Son of the Shadows. I finished Daughter of the Forest last night. Loved it! The story was fascinating and beautiful and sad. I did shed a few tears.

At the moment I am reading a paranormal romance, but next I plan on reading either The Crown Conspiracy since it looks like we will be reading the next book in that series very soon for the group read or The Curse of the Mistwraith, which I will need to return to the library in a couple of weeks.

If you're looking for a fun, fast read you should definitely try the Crown Conspiracy next. I've recentky read it and enjoyed it. It's nothing like Daughter of teh Forest, of course, so you might find the transition a bit hard to adjust to.
I also have The Curse of the Mistwraith on my bookshelf, waiting for me to pick it up. Just as some other 20 books....

message 88: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Broadwell (nikkibroadwell) Hi Nita,
What paranormal romance? Do you ever read Charles De Lint? He has a new one out that looks interesting...some of his can become a bit too much but I've enjoyed many of them...

message 89: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) Nikki - I just finished Drink of Me. One of Jacqelyn Frank's better paranormal romances.
I have read Dreams Underfoot (Newford, #1) by Charles De Lint. I enjoyed it, but he is definitely an author I have to be in a certain mood for to read.

I decided to start The Crown Conspiracy.

message 90: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Broadwell (nikkibroadwell) Hi Nita, I know what you mean..I have one of his that I started about 6 months ago and haven't picked back up..I like it when he focuses on Celtic mythology but he seems to go all over the place with what he includes! I will check out Drink of Me..have not read Jacqelyn Frank. am finding that I've been in a bubble when it comes to authors!

What do you mean?

HBO series. HBO is making a new seires based on GRR Martins Song of Ice and Fire series. Supposed to be out next spring. Google Game of Thrones and you will see the link to HBO about it. Looks pretty cool.

message 94: by Arthur (last edited Nov 29, 2010 12:47PM) (new)

Arthur (astra) The series are unfinished and might never be finished. What is a point to start TV series of something that doesn't have an end?
*A scratches his head*

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Beats me, but it looks pretty good! I am sure that it will be "loosely" based on the books and take many liberties to expand the story. But, I have had the books on my book shelf for some time now so it was a good excuse to start reading them. So far I am really liking it. Tyrion seems to be one of those characters that is going to be loved and hated at the same time.
