After a great deal of research, I actually used the WhiteSmoke software to do a final edit on mine. It had some advantages and disadvantages--the main disadvantage being that it is a software program and not a human editor with intelligence and discretion. While not exactly perfect for historical novels because of the unique "rich language" that is inherent to the genre, it did catch some things like split infinitives...as if anyone other than language purists truly cares :) However, it did also catch things like missing "tiny" words such as is, a, etc. Altogether, I'm glad I took the time to use it; because it did help me polish my writing and tighten it where it needed it by allowing me to see my own writing through another pair of eyes. In the end, it did give me the confidence to stop editing (and re-editing) and finally publish. Finally, I would strongly caution anyone going this route to ignore any of the stylistic commentary or your book will end up losing its unique voice.
