Maggie (maggie-swift) Do the Twilight characters get to you? What about their names? Some I think SM stole...
Jacob Black- turns into a dog-like thing, last name black. Remind you of anyone? HP fans, think!
Seth/Leah Clearwater- Clearwater? As in Penelope Clearwater, Percy's Ravenclaw GF?

Mandie | 71 comments Good point. I thought of the things with Jacob before but I didn't notice the thing with Seth and Leah, probably because Penelope is not a major HP character. However, I don't think SM stole the names from HP.

Mandie | 71 comments The first HP book is from 1997 if I remember correctly. It's possible that she stole the names, but what I meant was that I'm not sure whether she is intelligent enough to have read HP or to know what plagiarism is and that it is not allowed. It is possible that there have just been a lot of coincidences and similarities between Twilight and other books. It's not very likely, but still it's possible.

And when you think about some other YA books, Twilight is more original in some aspects, e.g. her vampires being different and the plot. While both of these things were crappy, at least her plot and creatures weren't copied off another book. I'm not defending SM, but I'm just saying, if you have read Evermore, you would know that other authors have done much worse and copied almost a whole story. I'm sure there are many other books that have ripped Twilight off too.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that two last names are not that much of a big deal, especially since it could just be a coincidence. Also when you think about the number of characters in HP, if you really count all of them (I think there are over 750 including magical creatures and characters only mentioned a few times because they have something named after them), you will see that there are very many, meaning it would be easier to have a similar character name in another book. And SM seemed to use common names. Not extremely common, but she didn't give her characters names that were uncommon, e.g. Bellatrix. Black is probably a common last name and when you think about SM using common names, this makes sense.

Mandie | 71 comments Yes, I don't know what SM was thinking with that one. Maybe she was making a joke because she thought it was ironic, or maybe she was referring to the ugly duckling; Bella is awkward and ugly until she meets Edward, and then she becomes awesome and a 'beautiful swan'. If it was the second one, I think SM needs a lesson in subtlety. Other authors use symbolism in their character names e.g. JK Rowling does this with practically every character, except it is not usually noticeable unless you look up the meaning of the names. Bella Swan, however, swan is obvious, that is in English, and Bella, practically everyone knows that Bella is Italian for beautiful. Even though it is not in English, everyone knows what it means so it might as well be.
