Mon | 26 comments Probably should be doing actual work rather than posting here, but I'm trying to understand the New York scene during the 1950s, the American corporate culture in particular. Is there any good literature I can look at/reference? Thanks :)

Ooh good question. I havent read any 1950's NYC novels, but would definitely be interested in seeing what books are out there.

Tracy Phillips | 133 comments I am not sure this is what you are exactly looking for but you might try "On the Road" and "New York in the Fifties".

Brenda | 266 comments You should try to read The Education of an American Dreamer: How a Son of Greek Immigrants Learned his way from a Nebraska Diner to Washington, Wall Street and Beyond, by Pete Peterson. This is Pete Peterson's autobiography. He was the Vice President of McCann Erikson (a global advertising agency based in Manhattan)at age 27, then a CEO at Bell and Howell. Later he became Nixon's commerce secretary, then CEO of Lehman Brothers. This book was so interesting, he mentions he really had no plans for building his career and often refers to his promotions and accolades as "luck". Even though his entire career wasn't spent in New York, you get a feel for the corporate culture at the places he worked.
