another good one...thanks Rodolfo. My concern with all of these new ebook firms is yes, they get the ebooks out there.. but how are your sales? are you getting ANY sales thru either booklocker (Vanessa) or untreedreads (Rodolfo) ?? We write so that others can read and enjoy, right? Liam
Yes, there are sales but nothing you can retire on. The fact is that hundreds if not thousands of persons are publishing now and that any book, no latter how much you or the company spends on marketing, can get lost in the sludge of titles. Being the next Ken Follet, or whomever still takes a huge amount of luck. Its likecwinning the lottery.
you're both right re marketing, and I know it. Luckily I'll still eat even if there aren't huge sales...but I DO like to know folks are reading my stuff. So I'll keep up with my website, FB page, twitter, etc...and try some chapters on the ebook venues! thanks again..Liam www.terminalpolicy.com
Hello Liam,There are several routes to go with self publication if you are interested. I am preparing to do so this summer. Places like www.scribd.com now allow you to post files to their store (as well as free sections). www.smashwords.com is a large independent site that will do some work for you in exchange for a 10% cut. They have access to ibooks, and others (as well as their own store which you can post to without giving them a cut).
It is supposed to be fairly simple these days to upload work to the kindle store and Barnes and Noble. (I have not yet tried.)
My plans are to use a clump free short stories available on my blog, here at goodreads, at wattpad and scribd to draw attention to the rest of my material which I will make available really cheaply through all the main ebook venues/stores. I hope this helps. I'll have to friend you so I can know when they are available!
Another avenue is to publish on Kindle or Nook. I've put several things out on Kindle and it is quite simple to do--the reformatting is mostly automatic, depending on the current form of your work. Go to http://dtp.amazon.com and have your books ready for submission in no time--a couple of day wait for amazon to verify and test, and you're up on Amazon. You still have to drive people to your book, but the rest is easy.
You are all right, but I must comment that a publisher will help you in many ways that would be time consuming and even expensive for you: first of all, they do give you help in poliching and getting you MS ready for publication, as well as providing a good book cover design. They also help you put your MS into many different formats, which can be tricky technically. They also make an effort to keep you posted on ways to market your material, and do some marketing themselves. Self publishing is great but I cycled through four or five editing and proofreadings before I was satisfied with my MS. I received lots f help in getting the MS into "Chicago Style" publishing form, something that will help you a lot when approaching a print publisher.
And another... from places like ereader.com you can download software to convert your file to several e-book formats: palm, mobi, pdf, etc. These can then be uploaded to ereader.com, fictionwise and several other ebook websites. Once again, just having them there is the easy part, getting your book known is the hard part.
I received this from Borders. http://borders.bookbrewer.com/homeBorders Get Published™ is a self-publishing tool that uses BookBrewer™ technology to convert your written words into published works sold through major online booksellers.
All that's needed are your words and a passion to get published. There's no risk, because the process of assembling and testing your eBook is free! When you're ready to publish to Borders, Kobo Books, Amazon.com, iBooks, and Barnes & Noble, simply purchase one of our affordable self-publishing packages. We'll assign an ISBN to your book and distribute it to the online booksellers ... and you retain all rights to your hard work... all for only $89.99.
Wherever you decide to publish Liam, make sure you own the ISBN number for your book.
and thanks again for the info! I've already uploaded my book into Kindle and have been tearing my hair out trying to find out how to get Terminal Policy (or TP, as my wife irreverently calls it!) onto the Border eBook, since the local Borders already carries my hardcover and audiobook. None of the Borders reps, even in India, have told me about GetPublished! so I'll check it out and we'll see what the future is for Borders...either expand or die :-(. And I DO own the ISBN number for both the hardcover and the audiobook...I think. I better check to see if it's in the name of my old publisher.

good Luck!
