I did a similar one on LibraryThing called You Read Mine, I'll Read Yours. I read a classic, hard sci fi, chick lit, and a western. I didn't like all of them, but I really enjoyed the reading experience anyway, chatting with my partner about the book I chose for them and the one I was reading, and also just experience genres I normally avoid.
This was also my motivation for nominating a task where you have to read a genre you normally avoid on Patchwork. It's always good to try new things, and you can find something you could like in every genre I'm sure.
So sign me up :)
Oh, but only for December onwards - I have exams :(

Thanks for signing up Lauren, tell you what seeing as people tend to be writing exams, lets start this Challenge in December.
People have the 23rd November to sign up, Lu will assign partners on the 24th November and the Challenge will start December 1st.
The challenge is for 3 months! so plenty of time to read the book your partner has chosen
Hope this will suit members better :-)
Hey. We aren't that backwards. Vodacom has 3G coverage if you have a laptop with 3G. If all else fails you can access the site on your cell (like I'm doing now since I only have internet at home).
@NovelYear: Then a cellphone with Opera Mini on it would be the cheapest option. Takes less than R1 to continuously browse Goodreads.
Sweet :) That's why this is there "And of course you could always give your partner a choice of either choosing a book from a certain author or offering them two or three books to choose from."

Is that ok with you?

Well you look at what the other person likes, and try and suggest a book you loved in that genre/theme and that the other person has not read.
I would look at their star ratings, if they read a similar author and see if they like that type of thing, and see what they rated highest, and find a book I have read that is similar.
But to be safe you can give 2-3 options. The goal is to widen the person's reading experience without being mean and giving them something they would never read.

I'm a bit unsure because of the bit Emma mentioned about picking a classic if your partner doesn't have one on their shelf, or you can "pick one from your own list/knowledge that you know they probably would never try". Which is a bit more like getting them to try something new but not too far out out of their comfort zone?
Well yea getting them to try something that you are pretty sure they would like, but know they would enver try themselves.
Ok the sign ups will end tonight, and I will assign each person to someone.
We have a round number:
Emma
Lauren S
Monique
Crusader
Lu
Naz
Lauren F
Charl
I have had a request to end this earlier, and I doubt more will join.
So will assign everyone after my exam tomorrow!

The aim of this challenge is to get people to read something different, but at the same time we dont want to be sadistic about it. Lauren you hate Twilight and are not keen on the whole romance novels, Our other member Lauren doesnt like Harry potter, so it would be useless to choose books that the person is not going to enjoy, nor do we want to pick obvious books for our partner. Wouldnt be a challenge then. Like I mentioned if you wanted to you can give your partner a choice of 3 books (This is totally optional).

Just for the record, this Lauren doesn't like Harry Potter either :)

The person on the left choose for the person on the right

I choose for you, you choose for me
We've all seen groups where they do a Pick It for Me Challenge sometimes every month, sometimes less often, so I had this idea that we could do a similar thing but rather than just pick a book from your Partners TBR...maybe one that's been there for months and you think they wont read but know they'll like, pick one from your own list/knowledge that you know they probably would never try. The idea is to get people to explore their reading and books. This is not meant to be a 'sado fest' and by that I mean make someone read something thats way out of their comfort zone, but rather if P likes crime but has no classics on their shelf then suggest they read Charles Dickens...... Historical reader who likes a Touch of Romance? then they get Nicholas Sparks. You get my drift? The choice of books should be limited to those that readers could buy from a bookstore, borrow from the library , nothing expensive or obscure. And of course you could always give your partner a choice of either choosing a book from a certain author or offering them two or three books to choose from. There would be a time allowance of say two months to read your book to take into account library reservation systems etc.
We could randomly be assigned a particular partner when someone signs up for the challenge? Lu is going to set this up for us.
People have until the End of November to sign up, Lu will organize our random partners and then we can each get busy looking for a book for our partners. We need to have books for our partners by November 24th. This Challenge will start on the 1st DECEMBER.
So if you think you will be interested in this challenge then please sign up below. Hope we have fun with this.
