Australian's play every sport known to man. We are a sports mad nation. Softball has been played in Australia for a very long time. I played it as a kid. It was the only sport on offer to girls at my school. I don't know how long Baseball has been around, it will never be as popular as Cricket.

Gail "cyborg" wrote: Australian's play every sport known to man. We are a sports mad nation...Gail, softball was the only sport girls could play at my school, as well. Now soccer seems to be the big sport for both boys and girls around here.
I have a question for my Aussie friends about "soccer" that is book related. I know that most of the world calls the game "football" and Americans are one of the few or only countries to call it soccer. In the book, I Am the Messenger, the author refers to the game of soccer. However, the description of the game sounds more like Rugby. I'm wondering if the name of the sport was changed for the U.S. publication of the book or if there is some game in Australia called soccer?
Carmel wrote: "How did your w/end go Patricia?..."Carmel, it was wonderful. We just got back from our last visit with the out-of-town family and we're all very tired. I think my Mom really had a great time on her birthday, though.
How was the concert and shopping?

The big sport for girls here now is netball (it’s a little like basket ball except you can't dribble the ball). My daughter refuses to play netball, she plays softball and field hockey.
We call football soccer, though everyone here has been told to now call it football. It’s exactly the same as your soccer. I wonder if the change was an error? We have a number of football codes other than soccer. Rugby League (for thugs), Rugby Union (the game) and Australian Rules (mainly played by Victorians). I could be in a little trouble by some members of the group, but that is how I see it. :D

I'm not sure why the book makes it sound like rugby. We use the word 'football' as an umbrella term for any game with guys running around kicking a ball.
We also have a homegrown game called Aussie Rules. But I'm not a football (of any code) follower so here's a link if you want to check those 2 codes out.
Aussie Rules Football
Soccer Australia
Thanks, Gail and Mandy. I guess the game in the book really was soccer then. I thought the description made it seem more of a contact sport, but it was probably just a misunderstanding on my part.I like your take on the different football codes, Gail. haha I guess I'm a bit of a thug then 'cos I really love rugby league. Up the Bunnies! :p Union seems too slow for me, with all the scrums. And I've watched a couple of games of Aussie Rules but it just seems like utter chaos. I'm hoping they televise some games this year so I might get a better handle on it.
Patricia it's the players that are 'thugs' really not the supporters.
Oh my...So that bottle of 'water' she is holding is perhaps some vokda instead or white rum~!Did you tell the dog off for it's bad aim? ehehe
Give her a hard time for us!! Hehehehe :D *Ahem*
Nah, I hope you both have a wonderful meal and great time gas bagging together. Maybe go raid her chocolate stash as well..lol
We expect to hear all about it!
YAY!! GOMA is open again after the floods. All cleaned up and ready to go. That's the Gallery of Modern Art. My favourite place in Brisbane. Going there this weekend with my niece to see the Art in the 21st Century exhibit. All the galleries, museums, state libraries etc are located on Brisbane's beautiful Southbank complex. It was all badly affected by the floods so anyone living in Brissy, go visit Southbank and buy a coffee or two to help the shops/restaurants get going again.;)
WELL!!!! Just had an awesome dinner with Carmel!!! A wonderful evening, lots of chatter, some photos....(will put one up soon), beautiful food & wine! It's a shame we're not staying longer.. Thanks for a great night, Carmel. xo
Yes, lovely to finally meet each other...we'll have to see if we can meet some of our other 'buddies' some time soon! :)

Last sunday we had my son's 12th birthday party. We kept it simple and cheap this year. Only 10 boys were invited to a pool party. BYO water gun. As you can imagine my daughter steered well clear of the pool area. My husband mowed a cricet pitch on the back lawn. some of the boys played a game of cricket while the remaining boys shot the cricketers with the water guns. The cricket pitch turned into a quagmire and eventually became a mud slid. The boys jumped into the pool to clean off. I did suggest we hose them off before allowing them back in the pool but I got howled dowm. Oh well, I don't do the pool chores thankfully. :)

It was a great day and really involved very little organisation though I was exhausted at the end of the day.
What a great party for a 12yo! Looks like lots of fun was had by all, but I wonder how long it will take for the cricket pitch to grow again..lol
The cake looks delish..of course it's a chocolate cake too!!!
I'm guessing you were extremely happy to get to bed Sunday night Gail!! LOL

What a great party, your a great MOM! <3
This weekend going to a bbq Sat night for my Sister's birthday and going to try again on Sunday to go to GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) in Brisbane to see the Art in the 21st Century exhibit. The building was underwater in the floods and has only just re-opened. Luckily all the art was moved to higher ground before the flood.
@Gail- Sounds like it was a great weekend!@Mandy- Don't party to hard ;) The GOMA should be great to see. I really wanna get out to MONA sometime soon.

Sounds like a great weekend Mandy! Enjoy!! So wonderful that the art was taken to higher ground before it was inundated..would be devastating!

Weekend was nice and relaxing x)I actually pushed GR (and this group) to a family friend of ours. She is quite a reader and whenever we meet up we always natter about our latest reads. Interestingly she was reading the same book as me because of BD sale.
It was a nice night overal...Now, I can talk about a job and it just happens to be in a profession my mother/family friend are in soo I'm not babbling about the usual confusing graphic design stuff..LOL
Otherwise caught up on Southland..US cop drama..I like it for some odd reason. It's not the best out there but seriously I just enjoy it.
Started a new game on the PS3..I hope to finish it as quick as possible. Also read two graphic novels which I've been meaning to do for ages.
And now I count down the hours until my email is read...DUN DUN DUN! >:O!!
Monday here I come!!
Hope everyone had a great weekend :D
We had a comparatively relaxing weekend. Nothing on today, so I ignored the house work that could be ignored and relaxed. Heavenly. :)
My baseball team made it through to the semi-finals.

@Gail- Graaattss for the semi-finals :D!Darn..I didn't ignore housework! I washed the shower to make it sparkle :s Then, I scrubbed until I cleaned some marks off various parts of the house, cleaned the cat litter and my room..*phew*
Since I am way to lazy to iron atm, tomorrow morning I'll iron my jumper/hoodie for work...Mmm <3 hoodies :P
After.....18?! Years! (OMG!) I have a boyfriend! O_O

Surgery Carmel,
I've put it off long enough and in Texas it will be easier for me to recuperate and plus check on the folks.

Thank you Carmel, thats very nice of you :)
I would like a new boyfriend. One with some money. Just don't tell my husband. I haven't had a new one since 1986.

I just want money to live comfortably on..Not to have mega millions (i think life might become boring then).
That's alright Laura. You will get old one day.
I don't want to be a millionare either. All the ones I know are wankers.

Hmmmm wonder if I made myself clear? They are a bunch of d...ks, with a grossly over inflated value of their own self importance.

Unfortunately I've worked with quite a few over the years. It's amazing how alike they are in their behaviour. I only know business men of course, that could be part of the problem.
At least you can leave them at work Gail, you don't have to put up with them in your leisure time...thank goodness...LOL

Wow you w/end plans sound fabulous Patricia! Where have your family travelled from and are they on holidays? I've never been to Disneyland, but hear it's amazing. Hope your mum ..."
Carmel, most of my family lives near me in Southern California but some are visiting from Northern California, Arizona and Massachusetts.
Gail, for some reason I didn't think that softball or baseball would be a part of youth sports in Australia, figuring it would be cricket instead.
