Lauren Smith Hmm, I'd say no - Frankenstein is just fictional, not mythical, ie. there's no established body of myth or folklore about him, he came into because of Mary Shelley. On the other hand, if you can find myths or folklore about a monster made out of dead body parts and reanimated, then I'd say he counts

message 60: by Crusader (last edited Nov 13, 2010 04:00AM) (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Well, the Egyptians had a myth where Osiris was cut into pieces and his body parts scattered around the world. Isis tracked them down, and through magic brought him back to life.

Also Frankenstein seem to be based on the Greek Promethean myth where Prometheus created a living being from clay in the shape of the gods. Which also has the same undertone of stealing forbidden knowledge.

Don't know it that counts.

message 61: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh yes, I forgot the alternative title for Frankenstein is The Modern Prometheus, so I guess it counts then :)

The Egyptian myth is about resurrection, not creation though.

Lauren wrote: "The Egyptian myth is about resurrection, not creation though."

True.

I'm not too concerned with it, so if someone has any objection to it counting I'd be more than happy to remove it.

message 63: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm ok with it, based on the Prometheus thing, but perhaps you could use it for the 1st task, Greek mythology instead? The original characters - Prometheus and man - are not monstrous, so you can't say the story is about a mythical monster; Shelley only made them monstrous in her novel.

message 64: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
That sounds like the best option. Surprisingly there really isn't much all that monstrous about the monster in the book except his appearance, and then later his acts. It's nothing like the film versions.

message 65: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, I just felt sorry for him most of the time. Frankenstein is more of a monster.

Lauren wrote: "Yeah, I just felt sorry for him most of the time. Frankenstein is more of a monster."

I completely agree. You really feel sorry for the monster especially after the part where he tells his own story for a while.

message 69: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Yes, you are doing it right. With careful planning you can use a book for 3/4 challenges. That's somewhat the point of the challenges, otherwise it would be very unlikely that someone will read 125 books in a year.

Lauren Smith What did you think of the Mieville Crusader?

A friend lent me a copy, and said it's a bit slow at the start and it only really gets going in the middle. I yelled "that's 400 pages!", but it turned out be a great read anyway :)
Slightly disappointing ending though.

message 100: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Yes, it's an amazing imaginative world, but the story did drag at times with some sections that could have been left out entirely without altering the storyline at all.

The ending was a disappointment to me too. You don't get any sense of closure.
