I believe it was newly published - it was hardcover, checked it out from the local public library where I kept an eye on the sci-fi section.

Nope! I've come across some of these - periodically I search, but it was none of these. It was not, as far as I know, part of a series.

Yes - in fact there was a sexual encounter between the parents (of course I would recall that). And not sure. I think they started elsewhere and ended on Earth. But I wouldn't swear to that.

involved a family where the mother was an artificial intelligence and the 2 (?) children were on the run from some government agency. The "mother" was captured and tortured by having her memories erased. There was some question re the citizenship rights of AI entities. Travel between planets was strange - resembled the movement through an endocrine system. As I recall, it was a pretty well written and original book.
