Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Hehe cool :)

Do any of you do any other challenges? I'm new to this whole challenge thing. How do you find out about other challenges? I've even started my own book challenge blog... slowly becoming addicted :)

This is my first reading challenge. You can find a lot of challenges on other people's book blogs. They have them posted in the sidebars with book meters underneath so everyone can see how far they've gotten (this is what I did so I can keep track).

message 53: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I like the rainbow challenge, where you read books with each color. I can start one of those if you want Piper. There is also around the world challenges where you read a book from each country listed, but I can't seem to get very far with those challenges.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) I saw the rainbow one elsewhere and I've started that one. I put the picture of all the covers up and it looks very pretty. I will definitely do it with you Heidi, I'm doing it solo at the moment. (Kind of making it up as I go along!).

I'll post my blog up in the blog thread and have a look through some other people's book blogs.

I've not come across a book meter before... will investigate it, thanks Chelly :)

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Hehe, language is a virus, good name for a site. Thanks again.

message 57: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (itsmechelly) | 45 comments The rainbow challenge is a little hard, I have to go through the covers on my TBR list and pick out books that match.I need orange, red, yellow, green, purple and blue...(how many colors are in the rainbow)?

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) I chose: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink.
Maybe we should make another thread if we're serious about the rainbow challenge? :)

message 59: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (itsmechelly) | 45 comments I just saw another group thread for a challenge to read a book that takes place in each of the 50 states. I'm not going to do that one for this challenge, but it's a cool idea.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) I've updated my blog with the new book metres.. although it looks a bit depressing with them all being so low... I should get reading :)

message 61: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments 9/111

And one of those was a parenting book and one was a classic. Yay!

I've seen both the rainbow challenge and the A-Z challenge, but I haven't participated in either. This year I did the 100+ book challenge, but I stopped counting when I hit 100 (which was back in August I think).

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

I like the idea but for some people that would bo too easy....... so why not make it 200

message 63: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (itsmechelly) | 45 comments 200...nah, no thanks, I have a life (somewhat)

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Wow, I couldn't do 100 books a year, I've not even made 50 books a year in a while.

5/111 :)

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, your profile is private

message 69: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) There are a couple of challenge groups on GR. I belong to the Romance Readers Reading Challenges (http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...) group. I still read primarily YA books, but they let me play anyway!

I do the monthly challenge which has 10 categories, so I have to read 10 books a month for that. I also belong to several book clubs, so I read those books and try to fit them into the monthly challenge if at all possible.

Now, I'm off to figure out these book meters. Thank you, Chelly. I love any type of list/countdown.

Me too, I just love watching the bar fill up, hehehe

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) It's all very addictive, and what a nice thing to do to achieve it :)

message 73: by Chrystal (new)

Chrystal (chrystalm) I'm in!

message 74: by Courtney (last edited Dec 11, 2010 01:30PM) (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) Well, it took me awhile to figure out the meter, or ticker, so here is an update.

111 books by 11/11/11
Young Adult Fiction for Adults
Duration: October 11th 2010 through November 11th 2011
45/111 COMPLETE

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Hehe those are sweet, you read too fast, only on 6/111 :)

message 76: by Chrystal (new)

Chrystal (chrystalm) I think I'm just going to read all the books I have accumulated lately. I have been buying tons of books when I see good deals and well haven't had as much time to read them all... so now's as good a time as ever. Plus, I will keep the ones I love and then put the rest up on bookmooch or sell them to my local used book store. :) This should be a fun challenge and well help me get through the piles of books I have. :)

message 77: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) There is a man who drives around our city picking up books that people are just getting rid of. Then he takes them back to his house and has signs posted all over the city for a Book Sale, prices $.25-$.50... it's pretty smart and I keep meaning to go see what he's getting rid of.

message 78: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Not to mention I have books put away that I could donate to him.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Wow Wendy, where does he find so many books? As I read that I had the image of books lying around on the path ready to be picked up :)

message 80: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think he actually sends around fliers in neighborhoods asking people to place boxes of books on his porch on a certain date that they no longer want. Then drives around and picks them up. My mother is leaving books out for him on Tuesday.

He lost his job and has had a hard time finding a new one, so I think he supplements some of his income by doing this. I really want to go out there and see what he has.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) You definitly should. I wonder if he'll have young adult? 25-50 cent will be well worth the trip!

How's every getting along with the challenge?

message 82: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments 13/111 - Going strong! Listening to another classic and have a parenting book on my shelf ready to go.

I've also added to my personal challenge to re-read any books on my book shelves that don't have a "date read" date attached to them. And so far so good.

Courtney K (cklueh) 111 books by 11/11/11

I changed my mind yet again. I still have my son doing the challenge, but since we read about 20 books per week I'm going to make it a little more challenging for him. He loves seeing his fishy move. He thinks it's Dorothy from Elmo's World.

Five of my books so far are adult books.

This is a briliant idea!

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) @Becca, I als like that idea... but I have sooo many!!

Aww Courtney, I love how your son is doing the challenge too :)

I'm still on 6... but almost finished the seventh!

Becky (bookhoover) Heidi I wrote: "I feel like a ding a ling, but let me get this challenge straight. We are to read 111 books by next year and add our own personal challenges into the 111 books???"

Yes, the "challenge" books are to be part of the 111 books.

What about everyone post their progress on the 11th of the month, or as close to that as possible? Only if you want to. We're making up the "rules" as we go along! You can just post how many you've read so far, or if you'd like to share the titles, that's okay too. Especially if you'd read something really good.

message 89: by Becky (new)

Becky (bookhoover) Chelly (Books Like Stars) wrote: "I sent the person who started this challenge a message awhile ago but she never responded so my guess is we're on our own. Unless anybody has seen this challenge posted somewhere else (please let ..."

Sorry Chelly, that was me--I haven't been on for a while. I just threw this idea out there. The librarians who originated the idea meant it to challenge themselves to try out different kinds of books than they usually read, to stretch themselves. You can really make it whatever you want. I just thought it would be fun to get a bunch of people doing it and we could compare notes. The only "rule" is that you try to read 111 books by 11/11/11, and for at least some of them to be books that you wouldn't normally choose to read. You can decide for yourself what that means.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Oooh okay: progress report for November:

Where I Belong by Gillian Cross 5/5
How Ali Ferguson Saved Houdini by Elen Caldecott 4/5
Puppet Master by Joanne Owen 3/5
Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky 5/5
The Thornthwaite Inheritance by Gareth P. Jones 4/5
The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan 5/5
The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness 3/5

7/11 :)

I'm stuck reading an awful book. Might sit down and blaze through it this weekend!

Back again to share the author I newly discovered in ADULT books: Meg Cabot. I've read her YA, so I decided to give the grown-up books a go as part of my challenge to read more adult novels. I read Insatiable and Queen of Babble. Insatiable was wonderful with intrique, mystery and romance. The Queen of Babble was typical romance novel, but very funny. I love Cabot's voice. I'm on the list for Size 12 is not Fat.

What awful book are reading? I want to know what to avoid, LOL. I read a Christian Romance for a challenge club this month that I could have done without. I was hoping for Jane Austen and was disappointed.

Lady of Milkweed Manor by Julie Klassen

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) Testimony by Anita Shreve it's being very repetitive and I've not even half way yet!

Wow Courtney... that looks like quite a challenge to me! Average sccore 3.85... that's surprising.

message 97: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think I'm on 14, I'll have to check my little book. (I keep a list of books I've read by month, lol.)

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) How is everyone doing?

I'm up to 12/111, not doing very well... but I'm really going to try to read as many as possible.

message 99: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I've completed 22/111. I think I'm doing alright. That leaves an average of 8 books a month until the end of November. Still a tall order.

message 100: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) UPDATE for Bobo and me. I'm posting a few days early. I've come up with a challenge for us finally (aside from reading more grown-up books for me). We are going to attempt to read all the books (that are age appropriate for Bobo who is 2) in our house. No more lugging bags of books from the library for me (until Summer Reading Club, of course).

Bobo: 115/1011
ME: 32/111
