Nenangs | 464 comments I stumble on this problem, and don't know how to fix it and where to post it.

When I click on this book's google preview link below the cover image:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/68...

i get a totally different book preview, which is:
http://books.google.com/books?id=kOII...

how is this happened?
and how to fix this? at least, how to disconnect the link?

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments It's the same book - just a different cover. Google preview works for all the editions - doesn't change for each cover option.

Nenangs | 464 comments melody,
thanks for the reply. yes, i am aware of what you are saying that google preview works for all editions not for particular edition only.

but for this case, the google preview of the deepwoods is linked with google preview of the following book:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/81...

funny though, now i can't open the google link for the deepwoods...the browser keep on loading and loading to no end. while for the "menuju rumah cinta-mu", the google link preview is not available.

who provide those links, anyway?

The previews are provided by Google, and sometimes the ones they provide for out-of-US-users are odd.

message 5: by Nenangs (new)

Nenangs | 464 comments the link is working again...and it still showing "menuju rumah cinta-mu" instead of "beyond the deepwoods"
*sigh*

rivka,
are you saying that when someone in US (you and melody?) click the link, you got the right preview?
weird....

Can't speak for Melody, but yes, I am. I get linked to this. In case that doesn't work for you, it leads here.

Nenangs | 464 comments weiiiiirrrrddd...

the first link didn't work, but the second one shows beyond the deepwoods...hmm...what's wrong?

I thought links like that supposed to work the same way for everybody everywhere (like put the link in the browser address and went to the web page) but obviously it did not so.

btw, you said that the previews are provided by google..does this mean that the google preview link is auto-linked, a bit similar with auto-uploaded books by amazon?

hmmm...it shows that there are still a lot of goodreads mistery waiting to be revealed to me...:D

Yes, the Google previews are auto-linked by Google. They are country/zone specific, although I don't really understand how that works.

Plenty of links are country/zone specific. Amazon will try to redirect you based on what country you are in, and so do plenty of sites. Music and video sites (Hulu, iTunes, etc.) often limit which countries they allow people to view things from.

message 9: by Nenangs (new)

Nenangs | 464 comments in that case, maybe i should contact google books directly via their "feedback" button. :)

thanks rivka, thanks melody.

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments Sorry - just now signing on to see the rest of this thread. Yes - I saw the same view as rivka. I had no idea the link would work differently depending on your location!

Sandy (scribingshadows) | 7 comments I got this same issue for another book. I was on the book page for The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and the google preview showed up for To the Fore by J.B. Mantill.

Do I just do what Nenangs did and use the feedback button to notify google?

I think that it registers/reads your IP address. Those are specific- certain numbers tell you what country, then state, then region, etc. That's why when you search on google, for say, Stanley Steamer, it will pull up listings specific to your city. So, Google does this on purpose. If you want to really "see" the US version, you have to use an internet proxy. I think www.fluffmypillow.com has a default US IP address. (Also good for if your work blocks certain internet sites, like Goodreads! Although, I would research to see how safe it is to run passwords through any particular site.) There are also proxies for other countries- run a search. (Good for when you want to watch streaming TV shows and they block by country IP)
