I'm personally still baffled as to how Twilight (out of aaaaall the way more interesting vampire stories), made it to this level.

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments Probably has something to due with the whole 'tragic/forbidden teen love' thing. I've wondered if you were to substitute the vampires with another monster, if the series would've been as popular. Or perhaps if the monsters were switched, Edward as the wolf (and able to turn Bella into a wolf), and Jacob as the vampire, would that have made a difference? What do you guys think? Also, for those of you who have, why did you read the Twilight series?

Miranda (miranda_fall) I feel like the "teenage hordes" (which I am sometimes regrettably a part of) were just looking for a newer, darker direction of something to obsess about. Under this theory, werewolves or something else probably would have reached close to their success as long as the storyline was basically the same. But personally, I wouldn't have liked them as much, or maybe at all really, because I just like vampires a lot more than werewolves.
I started reading the books because of their supernatural focus, but then just got really wrapped up in the story. As I was reading them, I realized that they were really an insult to vampire fans with sparkly, "vegetarian" vampires, and the writing really wasn't that good, but they were still really compelling. I suppose I'm just a sucker for supernatural romance.

Oh what book?! Share share! lol

Akaria Gale | 21 comments I think if you stay out of the YA section, you'll find plenty of non-angsty vamps. Well the vamps might be angsty but it has nothing to do with being a vampire.

Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series has vampires that are born, not made. She goes the vampires are aliens route. The origin is kind of cringe worthy but at least it's different! Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series has vampires being created by angels. No angst there either.

Akaria Gale | 21 comments GH is such a good series! You know Dmitri's getting his own book right? Comes out in September I think.

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments When Twilight was spreading in popularity like a plague, I avoided them. I didn't know what they were about, and they were so damn popular it turned me off. I will actually pass on a lot of stuff if it's the 'in' thing, the popular thing at that moment. But the moment I heard it had something to due with vampires, I had to read them. I still have the books, but I've only read them once. I've only seen the movies after they've come out on DVD.

Tricia, were you interested in the martial arts not so vampire series that I mentioned? The Lawson series is by Jon F. Merz. The book I recently read is
The Kensei which is the latest book in the series. It takes place in Japan. There's lots of action and there's some romance. Lawson's a vampire, but he also eats food. He does martial arts but there are humans who are better at it than he is. He's in love with a human which is forbidden to vampires in this series, and that's a major part of the plot. But it isn't primarily a romance. There's too much kicking ass in this book to pass muster as a romance.

Miranda (miranda_fall) Love the Guild Hunter series. I just finished reading all the ones that are out so far. The angels were amazing (I liked the unconventional, bad-ass take) and I appreciated the creative take on vampires as well. But I was also a little disappointed because it made vampires powerful, attractive, etc., basically just made them less. Still, a great series.
As for avoiding things due to popularity, I've been tempted to do that more than once but sometimes when a lot of people like something, there's a reason. I agree that a lot of things that are popular became so because they have a wide appeal and are therefore a bit washy or simple but sometimes they're just really good or fun. I just try not to rule things out simply because of their popularity.

Lisa O. | 48 comments Akaria - I hadn't heard about Dimitri's book, I'm so excited! I love the GH series and I definitely want all of Raphael's seven to have their own books. Oooh, YAY! = )

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments That's so exciting!! I've only read book one in the GH series, but Dimitri deserves something.

message 116: by Kathyjacks (new)

Kathyjacks To me there can never be too many vampire books out. I did read Twilight and liked it. It was the first paranormal book I have ever read and it introduced me to the genre. I have moved on from the teen angst thing though and very much love some of the adult vamp books. I'm just not interested in normal peoples lives or romances unless of course one of those lives include a hunky supernatural creature. Then I'm all in.

message 117: by Mis_Reading (new)

Mis_Reading (tenoko1) Hm. There are too many similar vampire books, stories that are all trying to follow the same thread and flavor in order to get sold, because they know that is safe. No one steps out on a limb and does something unique anymore. I don't get tired of vampires, just cliche stories.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 204 comments There are a number of authors who have stepped out on the limb, sadly there's about the same number who do use the same idea from other books. It's just a matter of which ones you're exposed to.

message 119: by new_user (new)

new_user Ah, yes, the vampires from the Guild Hunters, I like those. Definitely creative.
