Lauren Smith You can nominate 2 tasks each week for three weeks, until we have 25.
Week 1: 1-8 October
Week 2: 9-15 October
Week 3: 16-23 October
Week 4: We will figure it out when we get there :)

Tasks must fit the theme of mythology or folklore: myths from a culture (Greek, Sumerian, Norse etc.) gods and creation myths, biblical myths, creatures from myth and folklore (including vampires and werewolves), to modern re-tellings of myths and fairytales. Fiction or non-fiction.

Some ideas:
- Read a book about pixies (mythical creatures)
- Read a book based on Sumerian mythology
- Read a modern retelling of Cinderella

Get as specific and creative as you want, but if you're going to nominate a task based on the modern retelling of the epic of Gilgamesh or something, be sure that you can suggest some books for us!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok Task 1:
Read a book about Greek gods

Task 2:
Read a book about ancient Folklore... (any)

Change that to "Read a book about REAL Vampires and I'm game.

message 5: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well you can read a book about real vampires if you want, there's no rule saying you can't read non-fiction :)
I'll go for sci fi vampires probably. I actually really wanted a vampire task for this challenge, as I've got some books for it, but I figured someone would definitely nominate it. Thanks Lu!

Still trying to think of two tasks...

message 6: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith My nominations for week 1:
- Egyptian mythology
- Read a book about a heroine from myth or folklore. This doesn't have to be a warrior, but merely a main character. Examples: Penelope, Helen of Troy, Lilith, Beauty.

Emma wrote: "Just curious..What is a REAL Vampire?"

I meant real vampires in the sense of the pre-Twilight generation. No glittering, no nice, handsome, lovestruck suck-fests.

Something in the true blood-sucking-evil-monstrosity style.

message 11: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, haha, I thought you meant vampire lore or something :)

Any recommendations for the more monstrous vampires Crusader?

Maybe Darren Shans Cirque De Freak would be up your street?

Something along the lines of Brian Lumley's Necroscope series. Some truly evil vamps there.

Since you guys wouldnt fall for something vague, here's an additional vampire challenge: Read Bram Stoker's Dracula to explore the origin of the vampire mythos.

message 18: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm going to be mean and clamp down on that one too - please don't pick a single novel for a task. However, you can choose 'vampire classics' as a task, and specify publication dates. There are other vampire novels that contributed to the vampire mythos, such as Carmilla, which was published before Dracula.

message 19: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Darn, you are mean today! :)

Didn't know about Carmilla. So let's change it then to: Read any pre-1900 Vampire novel. That should cover all the earliest works that started the Vampire mythos.

message 20: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Sorry :) But if we can pick specific books I think these reading challenges are going to get a little too challenging but at the same time very boring for some.

For planning purposes, you can find a list of pre-1900 vampire novels here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_...
Just scroll down to the 'Literature' list and check the publication dates. Not all of those are novels (some are short stories or poems), so just check that before you choose one of them.

message 21: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
I understand completely, so no worries. What's great is that all these would be public domain so should be easy to find free ebook versions.

message 22: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yep, that's always a plus :)
I've realised that that Wikipedia list is a tad short, but if need be we can do a little research later and see if there are more options. I think a collection of early vampire short stories could also be interesting for that task.

Arthurian Legend - Think Geneviere, Merlin, the lady in the lake etc.

Mythical Place/Lands- Atlantis, utopia, Troy, Olympus etc.

Week 2

1. Read a book about Angel's, Like fallen Angels etc,

Examples:
Fallen
Kissed by an Angel

2. Read a book where someone has a "gift" "ability" "power", like mind reading, or being psychic.

Examples:
Dead Until Dark
Better Late Than Never
The Strange Power, The Possessed, The Passion

(my reasoning here is that there has always been myths about people that can do this)
If someone thinks it shouldn't be included please say so

message 28: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lauren wrote: "Mythical Place/Lands- Atlantis, utopia, Troy, Olympus etc."

Troy was an actual city though, so does this include actual places where mythological events occurred? If so, how far does this go? I mean, we could read any novel set in Greece, Egypt, Japan, the Middle East, etc. since all these places have their own myths.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we should stick to mythical places being places that do not really exist, like Atlantis etc, if it gets to technical there will be less of a challenge because we would end up reading anything if we could reason that it counts

message 30: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I agree Niecole.

My first nomination for the week:
Read a collection of fairytales (old or new)
Examples:
Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Anderson
The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt
The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Ooooh sounds so cool!
Do the Grimm Brothers count?

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yep :)

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

So could I read some childrens fairy tale book?
:), I have 2 nieces I read to a lot

message 34: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith That's ok, as long as it's not a very short one. Take into account how much space the pictures take up and work out more or less what your page count is. And of course you have to read the whole thing :)

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Thats no problem, I love fairytales! I especially love the Grimm Brothers books... I still have a few books of my own as well :)

message 36: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I like them too :) Some of them, as well as Hans Christian Anderson's, are so disturbing though.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

I know!
Most of the Brothers Grimms books are based on Folklore...
The Grimm Brothers stories all have a dark side... Its very much the good vs evil

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, that's why they're so violent and sexual - they weren't initially intended for children.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I should think not, in Red Riding hood she kills a woolf, Sleeping Beauty and the other princess tales they all have evil murderess step mothers! Or witches, thats scary

message 40: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I also find it very creepy that in the original Sleeping Beauty the Prince doesn't wake her with a kiss, he rapes her, then leaves her there, still asleep, and she gives birth to twins before she wakes up.

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Just to get back to mythical places for a second - Mount Olympus might not have housed gods but it's still an actual mountain, so does that mean it's out?

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my word! That is very creepy indeed!

I think that Mount Olympus was a name, but the place that they actually lived was Olympus, which was a palace in the sky... Not sure.

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Hmm, it seems that sources differ - some say it's the mountain, but others say it's a palace above the mountain, so that counts :)

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

I thinks so to... I think that the people build a kind of shrine to them on the mountain, but legend has it that the palace was floating above the mountain.

What other mythical places are there?

message 45: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Here is a list from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...

I hope I got it all?

message 48: by Lauren (last edited Oct 11, 2010 11:22PM) (new)

Lauren Smith My second nomination for the week:
Read a book about a mythical monster, excluding those already nominated (currently vampires, zombies, and dragons).
Monster examples: Kraken, Minotaur, Medusa, orcs
The monster should play a significant role in the story, not just be mentioned in passing or briefly encountered. To qualify as a monster the creature should be dangerous or hideous.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
With regards to my mythical places suggestion- I was thinking of it more along the terms of the way the place is addressed in the book- for example. If the book is about a goat herd who lives on the foot hills of mount Olympus it really wouldn't count. But if it was a book about a person/god/ demigod living on Mount Olympus then it would, if you see the distinction?

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Read a book about a Creature/Character that is Half human Half Animal.
Im talking
Centaur, Satyr, Mermaid, Birdmen.
Any man beast hybrid will do but they have to be a full time "semi" animal NOT A SHAPE SHIFTER

Go with it. I once had a Nectricot (Half Nectarine, Half Apricot) and it was life changing. So you just never know :D
