Tiffany | 92 comments I also thought that it was incredibly significant when the abolitionists started asking Amanita to call them by their first names. This is a true indication of their beliefs in equality.

Marialyce I am glad you felt that way, Becky. I was hoping it to be so as well.

I felt this book was an awakening, a jolt to the senses of what slavery was and that indomitable spirit to find home. Did anyone else feel that way?

I certainly did. It seemed that the entire book, Mina belonged to someone else. In the end, she found a place that she belonged, without belonging to some ONE. Does that make sense?? She stood for what all the slaves were trying to obtain, the freedom, the ability to belong in society etc.

Marialyce It does, Kat. I guess in a way we all want to count as individuals and I think Mina certainly was able to do that. It certainly gave the reader a lot to think about IMO.

Patty Abrams (paki1950) I liked it best from Africa through her plantation work because it gave a good view of what it could have been like to be a slave.
