Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 2442 comments I think you may be right Peggy - it's as if the thread 'forgets' you if you havent posted for while . Or something.

Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 2442 comments Hi Everyone. Isn't it nice to have new members and to see renewed activity . I'm excited anyway !

I've been thinking that we need at least another moderator, since Alice's health seems not likely to let her back in the near future. Also, Werner is not now a moderator being too busy elsewhere. Cassie is still listed as a moderator , but I am guessing she is madly busy elsewhere too .

Peggy is willing to be a moderator and Sylvia would have a loved to also but her health simply won't allow the committment, so she has reluctantly decided she can't . But ,as I said, Peggy can and I for one think she will be a perfectly marvellous addition to the board. Yay. !

Werner I think Peggy will be a great co-moderator; and I applaud her willingness to help out!

Yes, I haven't been a moderator in this group for a long while. Alice made me one while I was serving as a discussion leader for the Town House trilogy (I think she was under the impression only moderators could do that); but I stepped down as quickly as I could, since I'm not nearly as well-read in NL's canon as most of the rest of you are. Of course, the fact that I'm a moderator or co-mod in half a dozen Goodreads groups testifies that it's hard for me to say "no." Though my wife tells me I need to learn...

Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 2442 comments I have put a comment on the Tips thread re Janice not getting emails - I put it there because I figure someone wil know how do it and will post a reply so it can stand in the Tips thread. Hope that makes sense.

Also, but this seems to me to belong to Moderators so I'll put it here , I had a look at the blocked users thread today ( I believe I've never looked at it before ) and I was surprised to see what a long list it is. There is a guy called David Something who I blocked myslef becasue he persisted in writing about some book he or a friend had written and was clearly not interested in NL, only using to it advertise. A lot of the others look like that too, but I have no knowledge of them.

Also, a member called Connie was there -and I can't think why she should be. I have taken the liberty of unblocking her , but if anyone know something I don't .............

I know we removed some names, Peggy, who hadn't posted for anything for two years of so, but these are actually blocked, which I think is different isn't it?

Peggy (peggy908) | 1051 comments Barbara, I was doing some research on Janice's question of not getting feeds and hope I can respond soon. I belong to another group and I'm trying to figure out why I get all their updates but seem to miss some from the NL group. I made a change on my updates request page and will know tomorrow if it worked.

On your question of blocked users, I haven't blocked anybody. Most of them did appear to be authors. I have deleted a few members who had made no comments or only one or two and whose Goodreads status showed they had not been active on the main site for the last two years.

Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 2442 comments Odd, isn't it? I wonder if Cassie or maybe Alice did some time ago? Anyway I'm sure it was for a good reason if they did . So, apart from Connie, I'm happy to leave them blocked, aren't you?

message 59: by Werner (new)

Werner Members who have been deleted are automatically blocked by the Goodreads software from rejoining. So deleting and blocking are essentially the same action.

message 60: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (cassiepetty) | 185 comments I haven't removed or blocked anyone. I didn't know you could and until you said about someone advertising, I couldn't imagine why we would want to.

message 61: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (peggy908) | 1051 comments Deleting and blocking can be two different actions. If you are a member of a group, you have the option to block any member of that group. If you don't like their discussion posts or don't care to get their updates on an active discussion thread that you are participating in, it hides them from you! Also, if they happen to be bugging you in other ways, it keeps them from being able to contact you.

I've seen this called an ignore button on other forums. It's anonymous though - no user can see that you have blocked them.

message 62: by Werner (new)

Werner Peggy, what you noted above is true. That's a blocking function that any member of Goodreads can use, to hide (from themselves) posts by any other member whose comments are offensive to them. But if a group moderator deletes anyone's membership in the group, that deleted person is then automatically blocked from re-joining (which is somewhat different from the strictly individual blocking you described).
