Margaret (suzune-chan) | 4 comments I tend to keep all of my books that I buy and I stack them up on the tables at my apartment.

Although if it was a really dreadful book I will swap with other people for new books.

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) My books after I have read them go into my bookshelf....if they are a series I will place them in order as I read them cause most of my reading material if from like 10 different series or so. but I never get rid of them, someone told me today to take them to a buy back place so I can buy more books and I was like OMG NO!

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

If I really loved it I'll keep it, and read it again and again. I'l got books that the covers are falling off from being read so much. I've got bookcases bulging with books. I'll recomend them to friends. It's sad that many books go out of print.

If I didn't like the book I'll donate it to the local library or take it to a charity shop.

message 104: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Hi-this is my first post here as I'm very new to this group.

It's hard for me to part with a book & I swear that whenever I do, I need it within a few months for something. I will give fiction books away but not my poetry or most of my non-fiction. And even a lot of my fiction, I re-read, at least in parts.

So I guess I'm not very generous after all. I feel like my books are almost a part of them. (And I have over 1,000 in our not-so-big apartment). I can't imagine not seeing them everywhere. I feel so cozy surrounded by books!

message 105: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jsills3) | 54 comments If I love it I keep it forever. If I know I will never read it again I donate it.

message 106: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (drakenfyre75) I keep all the books that I own, I tend to loan them out to freinds when they ask for them..it's kinda like my own personal library.

I completely agree with you there.

Tex (tex2flo) | 2 comments Twice a year, I have a book swap that I combine with a clothing drive that I call the Twice as Nice. Mostly I have a group of friends and members of my book clubs come over and we drink wine, eat some good food... Everyone goes home with a few books they haven't read, the rest of the books are donated to the library for their book sales, and the clothing goes to the local women's shelter. I've been doing it for four years--ever since I moved to Florida.

message 109: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Clemmons (caroline_clemmons) | 28 comments I keep those of my favorite authors that I might reread, but give the others away. I used to try to sell them to a used book store, but received so little money that now I give them to a charity. Women's shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, Goodwill, etc. love to get books.

And one of the reasons I wanted a Kindle, which I love! You'll love the Kindle, too. You can loan some books, and I've loaned them to my husband. I love that so many free and 99 cent books are available for the kindle. Honestly, I don't know how I did without it. My bookshelves are heaving a sigh of releif. LOL

message 111: by Christie (new)

Christie Stratos (christiestratos) I keep pretty much every book I read. I can't help it. I'm trying to clear some out, but you just never know when you might want to read it again or refer back to it at some point...

message 112: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) I am a pack rat when it comes to books... I just can part with them.

That is so funny to me! Whenever I visit a home for the first time I simply can't resist looking for the books or (hopefully) the bookshelves so I can see what interests they have. I always display my favorite books very prominently although every room has a bookshelf (except my wife's bathroom!).

I could never keep the "good books" in the bathroom but I have a shelf full of good used books in there in case of emergency, lol! Usually the book I am currently reading goes with me wherever I go (including the bathroom). I just like to be sure there is always something handy!

I'm new here but I sure like this group!

message 115: by Bridgette (new)

Bridgette | 36 comments I try to sell my books on Ebay, and the ones that dont sell I do a part exchange with the book stall in my local market, if it is not a market day then i donate my books to charity as other people can enjoy the books that I have read.

message 116: by Bob (new)

Bob Cooley (boblikesbooks) | 16 comments I have several books that I am completely done with so I am going to have a small book/yard sale that I will advertise through craigslist. Of course I have several that I can never part with.

I have a funny story about too many books. When we moved to Washington state from California we used a moving service that allowed us to fill a giant box with all our stuff. Of course I loaded all my books first and then whatever else would fit. It turned out that we exceeded our weight limit (thankfully they didn't charge us extra) by about 500 pounds. When we got to our new home the box was still on the trailer because the local forklift was unable to lift it! They had to bring in a larger one. The books made it though! We still laugh about that.

message 117: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 3 comments I try to keep all my books, although those I don't like get sorted out when I have no space to put the good ones and they have to spent the next 10 years or so on my grandparents attic. The only things my room now holds are some clothes, some electronic devices and my BOOKS ...
I'm not really the person who rereads books, just because those I really like stick with me in my head and heart for all my life, but I like having them around and talking about them, showing them to friends and so on :)

message 118: by Kurt (new)

Kurt I keep all the books I read. I just can't bring myself to trade or sell them to a used bookstore. I pay good money for these books and i would think that I have entitlement to them! Sometimes, if the book is appropriate enough, or if it's a YA book, my kids will read them and I am fine with that, as my daughter finally is discovering after nine years that reading is very enjoyable!

message 119: by Summer (new)

Summer (summer-b) | 9 comments I am a complete hoarder - although I like to say "collector" - of...well...just about everything (like buttons and scraps of paper, I'm not joking). Needless to say, I keep every book I've ever read. Some books I have lost and re-bought, then found the original copy, but still keep the other copy as well. My life-long dream is to have a home-library, and find a bookshelf full of books to be the utmost in comfort and the most gorgeous home accessory.

message 120: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (pamelaboss) | 3 comments If it is book that I loved, I definitely keep it in my "library." If I wasn't a fan, I bring it to the recycled bookstore and I trade it for something I might like better!

message 121: by Linda (new)

Linda Rowland | 16 comments There was a time I kept everything. Now I keep non-fiction and some fiction. I do not reread books so I pass along to friends or give to the Friends of Library book sale. I have kept several series so that friends who want to read them will have a place to find the entire series. I am getting closer to
e-readers but not there yet. I do love the "real" book.

message 122: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 5 comments I have a nasty habit about the books I read if I read a book I have to buy it, I keep all of my books even if I didn't really like it, I don't know why I do this but I just feel like it its not on my bookshelf then its like I haven't read it i'm so strange maybe one day when my son is older I will give them all to him :-)

message 123: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Mullins (hixxup79) lol me too usually....though if I don't like it I don't buy it...and then If I read a series and get some from the library and then buy some..I have to go back and buy the missing books to ocmplete the series....I'm still working on that with some books lol.

message 124: by T (new)

T (twoo) | 16 comments Certain authors I collect. Some books I pass on to my cousins (knowing that I will probably never see them again, or if I did, they would be battered). Some books I pass on to a friend and her son (non-scary books). Some books I pass on to another friend (who likes the mysteries and scarier ones). And the leftovers from all of that end up at Goodwill usually.

message 125: by MJ Christine (new)

MJ Christine (mjchristine) | 2 comments I keep it.

message 126: by Nessa (new)

Nessa I keep them. I will buy every book I can get my hands on by an author I reall like and justify it as a "collection". Any books that don't fit in those collections, I will pack them in boxes and put them away. Every year when I do my spring cleaning, I go through the boxes and decide whether or not the books will stay in the boxes or will be donated. Generally, I can't stand parting with them though and only one or two will be given away. I guess I just don't like the thought of getting rid of my books if I can help it. They are like a part of me...as strange as that sounds....

message 127: by Thom (new)

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments As a rule, I save all of the books I have. I consider them as children; some are better than others but they are all equally loved and cared for. Only once I threw a book away. It was so bad I couldn't honestly add it to my family and afford it the same love and protection I gave and give the others. Today I went out and again came home with books; 17 books to be exact.
Fat books generally catch my attention. Any writer that can pour so much into one theme deserves a chance to be read; as do most others. I started the Outlander series this way and have now grown quite attached to the works of Diana Gabaldon. Actually the same applied to Pillars of the Earth and the works of Ken Follett.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) If it's a really good book or a "Classic," I keep it. Everything else I pass on to my family, friends, library, and ReUse Centre.

message 129: by Jools (new)

Jools (jools4853) I had always kept every single book I read, unless I happened to go to a flea market or book trader where I could trade them 2 for 1 or whatever. Now, I am so happy to have my Kindle where all the books I purchase are still out there - somewhere - (I think) after I have read them.
And with the Kindle Unlimited plan I can read many of the more expensive ones for free and return them. Works pretty well!

message 130: by Louise (new)

Louise | 280 comments I have a few authors/series where I keep all the books. Otherwise 1-3 star reads I usually donate or give to friends/family after I finish them.

message 131: by Terri (new)

Terri | 13 comments I used to hoard them but now I keep only my very favorites and give the rest away the 1st of every year

message 132: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez (lupedominguez) It depends, I guess, on how much I liked it. Like, if when I was done and I'm completely speechless/miss it already? It's a keeper. If it was just, meh? Sell it to my local bookstore for in store credit to BUY MORE BOOKS!!! :)

message 133: by Lára (last edited Aug 14, 2015 10:47AM) (new)

Lára | 175 comments I store them in my bookshelves or I put them just about any/every-where. My apartmant is full of books that are there just because. I also let plants (since I have as much plants as I have books) to grow over them. It looks pretty and it makes it even: from tree to tree :)

message 134: by Kirstie (new)

Kirstie Ellen (kirstieellen) Spend far too much time sitting at them looking all pretty on my shelf. Study < book-gazing

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

I keep the books that I like enough to reread otherwise I donate them to goodwill. I have been considering calling the library about donating, I love to buy at the annual friends of library sale so why not donate those books there.

message 136: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Unless they're really terrible, in which case they go to Goodwill, I keep them all. I'm okay for a bit but soon there won't be any more room for new bookcases. At that point, I'll have to rethink things. My husband would prefer to move to a newer home - ours is over 100 years old and full of problems. I've been very resistant as I'm extremely attached to my house, but lately I've been thinking that it might not be such a bad idea as we could find one with even more storage capabilities.

message 137: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa (bitterbane) | 2 comments I keep most of my books, but I will occasionally sell a few if they were not that good or give them to family/friends if it is a genre they like.

I enjoy staring at my bookshelves.

message 141: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Davis (catgirl02) | 9 comments I keep my favorites. The rest are divided between a bookworm friend of mine, and Goodwill. There have been a few that I thought were so poorly written that I didn't want anybody else to waste a minute of their life. Those went directly into the trash receptacle.

message 142: by Cherry (new)

Cherry (lithmuspaper) | 22 comments I KEEP all the books I have (bought and gifts). I love them all, and I always think about my kids that they might want to read them (or not). I put my name on the second page (always second page), under my name was the date I bought it and then my signature. If it's a gift I put the name of the friend and then the date. It's a thing I got from my grandfather and my father. They always do that.

message 143: by Eric (new)

Eric Mesa (djotaku) | 63 comments I generally keep them all, if nothing else than because sometimes I fall prey to the sunk cost fallacy. In other words, I paid for it - why wouldn't I keep it until it falls apart?

A few travel books have gone into the recycling bin.

message 144: by Thom (new)

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I used to save them all. Without thinking I would nestle them into my library and pick another. For years this was automatic; until I hit the wall. Physical books take up space and eventually any given space fills to capacity and reality sets in. I panicked at the thought of not being to collect more books and then mentally I devised a plan. I decided to read some books and reluctantly part with them. In time my library would be reduced but that wouldn’t be enough to quench my book acquiring hunger so I went cyber. My physical library is now showing a few empty spaces and now my Kindle Cloud library is larger (and better accessible) than the one at home. I am a little more selective about the physical books I save and look for hard back and first editions to fill the emptied space.

message 145: by Zouagie (new)

Zouagie | 41 comments I keep all of my books. It's money well spent and worth the damage. I can't imagine the thought of my future kids not reading, that's one of the specific reasons i keep them beautifully displayed.

I'm mostly doing the same with physical books. They're either nice hardcovers, Kickstarter prizes, or First-Reads.

Love this plan.

message 148: by Joshie (new)

Joshie (jgabcdefg) If I gave 1 to 2 stars, I throw them across the floor. If I gave them 3 to 4 stars, I caress and hug them. I'm just kidding, all books need love.

After reading, I place them on my shelf and then stare in awe at them after waking up. They're a lovely sight. Also, I love the smell they give my room! It's heavenly. One cannot have enough books but like I have read here, there'd come a time where there will be no more space for them anymore. I haven't reach that yet so until then, I'll keep on placing them in my shelf.

message 149: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 24 comments I'm 50% hoarder and 50% giveaway/sell. I'm a compulsive book buyer, so my bookshelves, every nook and cranny, and under my bed are completly filled with books I haven't read yet. I will keep the books that I absolutely love and then I'll go buy basically all of that authors books. If I liked the book, but it doesn't resonate with me, then I'll either sell the book at flea markets, eBay, or yardsales, or I will take the books to Goodwill. I used to take them to my local library, but they stopped taking book donations. :(

I need more bookshelves :)

message 150: by Patricia (last edited Sep 14, 2015 09:02PM) (new)

Patricia Dusenbury | 11 comments The books I like go to friends to read. The books that didn't engage me go back on the shelf. When the shelves are full, I wonder why I have all these books I didn't like that much and none of the books I loved. At this point, I haul a box or two to Goodwill, and then go buy more copies of my favorites. I've probably bought five, six, or more copies of my favorites, because I'm always giving them to someone to read and then wanting my own copy.
