Isaac turned, going to say that he didn't have time for child-things, but he couldn't. There was something in the utter innocence and sheer adorableness in Anfisa that did not accept the word 'no'.

"Oh, alright," he said, setting his tool down. He took the dandelion and blew, sniffling as some florets tickled his nose. Isaac couldn't help but grin as he watched the seeds float away in the summer breeze.

"Yay!" She clapped as the seeds flew higher and higher. Anfisa plucked a dandelion, and blew with all her might. The little seeds flew up to mingle with Isaac's, and Anfisa giggled.

Gillian sat at the base of a maple tree, taking shelter from the hot summer sun in its shade. She wiped the sweat off of her brow with the back of her hand, which was wrapped in a cloth down to her elbow on each arm. It was a common sight, as Gillian tried to avoid getting her hands scarped up from the lava wall by wearing them.

The midday heat was occasionally broken by a breeze, rustling leaves and cooling her senses that thirsted for a relief from the heat.

"Will! Hey," Gillian greeted with a smile. She blinked sun spots away as she turned to Will, her eyes having met the bright light and momentarily obscuring her vision. She had seen Will around lately but hadn't had the chance to sit down and chat.

"Just getting some climbing in before I meet some of my siblings down at the stables for a bit of pegasus-racing. They're going to eat Ginger's dust," she added, eyes alight with that winning drive. Ginger, her copper mare, was an exceptionally fast creature, trained by Gillian herself.

"I'm fine," she said, in regards to his remark at her burn. "I'll go see the Apollo cabin about the sting later." They were good about helping those that got little scrapes and scratches.

She rolled her eyes at his last comment, but let out a good-natured chuckle. "Yeah, but we're not racing the pegasi, we're riding them. Besides, if we were racing them, it wouldn't be fair. The poor things weigh a ton and have the wind to slow them down, whereas I'm so fast I could walk on water if I tried," she boasted, displaying that characteristic Gillian-confidence.

"Right, but you're a demigod as well." Though Will's idea intrigued Gillian. Her mind was like the rest of her - fast, constantly going through ideas at miles at a time. It could work, and she was curious.

"Will," she said, her voice a mixture of a question and a proposition. Gillian lifted her head to her taller friend, "Are you up for a race?"

Gillian snorted a laugh when Will so gracefully stood. "Nice, Will." She took his hand to steady herself, springing to her feet and preparing herself for the run. Will was going to have a hard time trying to beat her, that was for sure.

"Alright, so we'll race over to dining pavilion. Because when we get there we're going to need water," she said, walking out of the tree's shade and into the hot sunlight.

Gillian crouched next to him, feeling that spark in her skin whenever she was competing, and it was as if that gave her a renewed energy. Thank you, Mom.

"Okay," she said slyly. And a moment before Will could possibly guess the reason for her change of tone and wicked smile, Gillian said, "Three." And raced off.

Gillian skidded to a halt, nearly colliding with the wall and getting her face cooked off. "I really didn't need this," she muttered, stepping away from the wall. It was so hot, she couldn't help but wonder if it was a mirage of some sort. Then she remembered Will.

"You've got to be kidding me." She tried skirting the wall from the side, but lava cascaded from the top. The only way was over. Experimentally, Gillian put her hand to the stone to see if it was tangible.

Gillian yanked her hand away from the heat, standing helplessly in front of the wall as she watched Will easily stroll through the lava. Illusion? Whatever it was, it couldn't possibly be real, as much as she could feel it.

"This is so not cool! No pun intended," Gillian added.

"You said distraction, not obstruction," she retorted crossly. Gillian, though, did have to admit that she enjoyed a challenge.

Her mind dabbled with some ideas, particularly one that she skipped over because it seemed absurd. Once you rule out the impossible, whatever remains—however improbable—must be true.

Swallowing down her apprehension, Gillian stepped in the lava. She might as well have been walking barefoot and the surface of the sun. She bit back a cry of pain and located Will, running toward him and desperately trying to ignore the heat.

Gillian didn't have time to slow down - she hit the illusion lava geyser straight on, not bothering to stop the stream of ancient curses she instinctively shouted into the air. Somehow swearing made it more bearable, but not by much.

Then she couldn't find the stupid pavilion. She reached the point where it should have been visible. But instead all she saw was the a gigantic stone. A gigantic stone that shouldn't have been there. She must've been getting closer for Will to have set that huge 'distraction' up.

Gillian ran north from the rock, keeping her eyes open for the pavilion. Finally she saw it, and put on a burst of speed. But where was Will?

"A - ha!" Gillian's legs were burning from the exertion, her chest heaved and lungs ached. But she had caught up, and that was more of motivational boost than anything.

She began clawing her way up the hill, literally digging her nails into the ground and pushing herself up with dogged determination. Gillian was an agile thing, especially since she'd just come from the climbing wall. But she didn't have an endless supply of energy, and Will was still slightly ahead.

Finally she pulled herself, arms shaking, over the hill, and began her last sprint to the pavilion.

"For victory!" Gillian's voice answered in Greek, ragged from her heavy breathing, still held a note of brightness all the same. And then she took a long stride, launching herself in front of Will. With a win so close she could taste it, even past the sweat that dripped from her forehead, she stumbled into the pavilion.

Gillian tried to stand and talk, but her legs gave way and she landed in a dirty, sweaty mess on the floor next to Will. It wasn't lunch yet, so the pavilion was pretty much empty, and their laughter echoed in the large hall.

"That was too amazing, Will, really," she croaked, wiping tears from the corners of her eyes. Whether from laughing or pure exhaustion, Gillian didn't know, nor did she care.

After regaining her breath, she gave Will a weak smile. "You're going to be so sore tomorrow, my friend."

"Next time," she said, winking. Next time she'd be ready for his illusions. Or so she hoped.

Gillian's mouth ached for water. She let herself sit for a minute longer, then stood up. Her legs wobbled unsteadily, but she managed to get to the nearest table and grab two goblets.

She tossed one to Will, then told hers to fill the water. It was so sweet and delicious, so ice cold; Gillian thought she'd never drink anything else again. "Thank gods that these never empty."

"We you can walk again, preferably," she said, her joke poking fun at the fact that he was still on the ground and she had settled on a bench. It wasn't the Nike table, but no one was around to catch her.

"Also, I think I lost five pounds of pure sweat." Gillian looked down to see how soaked she really was, and turned red in the face to see that her shirt was clinging to her frame and outlining her, ah, undergarment.

"I uh, I should get going, and, um, take that bath, too. Bye, Will, see you later." The last comment was hastily thrown together into one word as Gillian set down the goblet and ran off. Well this is embarrassing.

sucre'd fiend (sucredfiend) | 33 comments Agraveere wasn't at all sure where she was.

She'd only just walked under some weird gate thingy, but everything felt different. It wasn't the bad kind of different. It felt calming, as if she were meant to be here. At that, she snorted and chuckled to herself. She was obviously meant to be in Vegas, even if she didn't agree with what her mother had gotten her into. She might have made a few mistakes, but she was her mother. It took a toll to raise a child all by your lonesome.

Agraveere shook the thoughts of family from her head, looking up to see how much light was left. Her big fancy watch had drawn too much attention, so she'd given it to someone on the street. Now, she was regretting that move as she examined the sun and its course to setting. It would be dark before long.

"I'm totally gonna get murdered by a psycho killer," she muttered, trudging on.
