Well, Big Jay McNeely does not make the cut for the rock and roll hall of fame again. My cousin who lives in Hollywood and knows Big Jay has been trying for several years to get the powers that be to recognize his contributions to rock and r/b. He was (and still is) one of the great "honkers" (sax players) of all time but it doesn't look like it is appreciated enough for his admission. He could sing too.

Henry Stone (with TK) broke down racial walls at the time. Ray Charles, James Brown, KC, Joe Tex - the list is endless. Henry Stone just cared for the music.
There might have been dance/disco but it would never have taken off the way it did if not for Henry Stone...

Heatwave

originally set up by Johnny Wilder and Rod Temperton in London in the mid seventies the band soon hit the charts with songs like Boogie Nights, The Groove Line, Super Soul Sister. Quincy Jones was so impressed by Rod Temperton's song writing he asked him to come and work on Michael Jackson's album. Things took off for Rod from there.

A pioneer of R&B, Ivory Joe Hunter stayed in public view by making the transitions necessary as R&B segued to rock and roll. A very talented artist.

Synopsis

Ivory Joe Hunter (October 10, 1914 - November 8, 1974) was an American rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, and pianist. After a series of hits on the US R B chart starting in the mid 1940s, he became more widely known for his hit recording, "Since I Met You Baby" (1956). He was billed as The Baron of the Boogie, and also known as The Happiest Man Alive. His musical output transgressed from R B to blues, boogie-woogie, and country, and Hunter made a name in all of those genres. Uniquely, he was honored at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Grand Ole Opry.

So true, Jill. It's almost a clown show to me but I always felt he was more of a businessman (albeit with a fine voice) than anything else so his hopping back and forth between styles and trying what'd sell best would have come naturally (just my guess).
Get Down is a nice example for that. It's well done and makes you want to shake your butt - or whatever else you can wiggle (smile) but musically it's a bag full of ideas others had before...

Here is a name that only the R&B fan will know.....Wynonie Harris. He was extremely popular in the late 40s, early 50s but is practically unknown today. He had a great influence on R&B and music in general. He was the origianl "brown eyed, handsome man".

Yes, sad. I wasn't a fan but I love music, especially when it's hand made and well done. He had some weak albums - in fact more than just a few, but still I believe he changed the way a lot of people felt about music and color and did some great songs. I thank him for that.

Andre I hear you, and consider you a true music fan for your outlook and appreciation of those who bring an art to their craft even though it may differ from your own personal taste. One of the things I find so interesting about music and musicians is the wide range of interpretation and seemingly endless creativity expressed through those with musical talent, and the seemingly endless rate at which some produce for years - Eric Clapton comes to mind. Where does that all come from? Fascinating.
