Jill H. (bucs1960) Well, Big Jay McNeely does not make the cut for the rock and roll hall of fame again. My cousin who lives in Hollywood and knows Big Jay has been trying for several years to get the powers that be to recognize his contributions to rock and r/b. He was (and still is) one of the great "honkers" (sax players) of all time but it doesn't look like it is appreciated enough for his admission. He could sing too.

Here is his biggest hit:

Henry Stone

June 3, 1921 - August 7, 2014

Henry Stone (with TK) broke down racial walls at the time. Ray Charles, James Brown, KC, Joe Tex - the list is endless. Henry Stone just cared for the music.
There might have been dance/disco but it would never have taken off the way it did if not for Henry Stone...

Heatwave

originally set up by Johnny Wilder and Rod Temperton in London in the mid seventies the band soon hit the charts with songs like Boogie Nights, The Groove Line, Super Soul Sister. Quincy Jones was so impressed by Rod Temperton's song writing he asked him to come and work on Michael Jackson's album. Things took off for Rod from there.

Jill H. (bucs1960) A pioneer of R&B, Ivory Joe Hunter stayed in public view by making the transitions necessary as R&B segued to rock and roll. A very talented artist.

Ivory Joe Hunter

Ivory Joe Hunter by Jesse Russell by Jesse Russell (no photo)

Synopsis

Ivory Joe Hunter (October 10, 1914 - November 8, 1974) was an American rhythm and blues singer, songwriter, and pianist. After a series of hits on the US R B chart starting in the mid 1940s, he became more widely known for his hit recording, "Since I Met You Baby" (1956). He was billed as The Baron of the Boogie, and also known as The Happiest Man Alive. His musical output transgressed from R B to blues, boogie-woogie, and country, and Hunter made a name in all of those genres. Uniquely, he was honored at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Grand Ole Opry.

Jill wrote: "It is too bad that Gene Chandler is basically only remembered for "Duke of Earl" which certainly is not one of his best efforts in my opinion."

So true, Jill. It's almost a clown show to me but I always felt he was more of a businessman (albeit with a fine voice) than anything else so his hopping back and forth between styles and trying what'd sell best would have come naturally (just my guess).
Get Down is a nice example for that. It's well done and makes you want to shake your butt - or whatever else you can wiggle (smile) but musically it's a bag full of ideas others had before...

Jill H. (bucs1960) As usual, you have made me smile, Andre. It is so good to see you jump into the discussions between your busy schedule.

Here is a name that only the R&B fan will know.....Wynonie Harris. He was extremely popular in the late 40s, early 50s but is practically unknown today. He had a great influence on R&B and music in general. He was the origianl "brown eyed, handsome man".

Jill H. (bucs1960) This book could be placed in many of the music threads since King records released a multitude of music styles.

King of the Queen City

King of the Queen City The Story of King Records by Jon Hartley Fox by Jon Hartley Fox (no photo)

Synopsis

King of the Queen City is the first comprehensive history of King Records, one of the most influential independent record companies in the history of American music. Founded by businessman Sydney Nathan in the mid-1940s, this small outsider record company in Cincinnati, Ohio, attracted a diverse roster of artists, including James Brown, the Stanley Brothers, Grandpa Jones, Redd Foxx, Earl Bostic, Bill Doggett, Ike Turner, Roy Brown, Freddie King, Eddie Vinson, and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. While other record companies concentrated on one style of music, King was active in virtually all genres of vernacular American music, from blues and R & B to rockabilly, bluegrass, western swing, and country.

A progressive company in a reactionary time, King was led by an interracial creative and executive staff that redefined the face and voice of American music as well as the way it was recorded and sold. Drawing on personal interviews, research in newspapers and periodicals, and deep access to the King archives, Jon Hartley Fox weaves together the elements of King's success, focusing on the dynamic personalities of the artists, producers, and key executives such as Syd Nathan, Henry Glover, and Ralph Bass. The book also includes a foreword by legendary guitarist, singer, and songwriter Dave Alvin.

Glad you like my music posts.
Though I feel very honored (big grin) by Jill's - shall I call it a suggestion? - I'm a little allergic to those bearded Hom-humming guys in pajamas telling folks where to find salvation and how - when found - to digest it.
That said I must say I'm not all too comfortable with the title - even less so since anything involving bad haircuts - I wouldn't go as far as calling whatever it is they do (or refuse to do) to their hair a cut - traditionally would be part of Jill's territory...

Yes, sad. I wasn't a fan but I love music, especially when it's hand made and well done. He had some weak albums - in fact more than just a few, but still I believe he changed the way a lot of people felt about music and color and did some great songs. I thank him for that.

message 100: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Andre I hear you, and consider you a true music fan for your outlook and appreciation of those who bring an art to their craft even though it may differ from your own personal taste. One of the things I find so interesting about music and musicians is the wide range of interpretation and seemingly endless creativity expressed through those with musical talent, and the seemingly endless rate at which some produce for years - Eric Clapton comes to mind. Where does that all come from? Fascinating.
