Balkha | 93 comments @ Aditya..Eat, Pray and Love was okay..I really enjoyed the "Eat" part which is set in Italy. The "Pray" bit in India got slightly too spiritual for my taste and the last bit set in Indonesia was alright. All in all I'd say it was an ok book..definitely not a must read.

The dim-witted glutton that I am, I only liked the 'Eat' part. The premise is quite promising, but Gilbert's style was a tad too chicklit-ty for my liking.

Yet to watch the movie, though.

Am returning two books half-read to the bookshelf
1. Red Tent - the initial half was interesting, but after the massacre its dragging a lot. So will finish it off when in a tolerable frame of mind
2. Eat, Pray, Love - start was shaky for me. That lady came off as whining, selfish, pleasure seeking ( I may be wrong, but that is the impression I got). May be I'll watch the movie first

Meenakshi (mcoolshi) | 1965 comments Can't believe that one can a bring a halt on a journey one had been so ready to embark on.This has never happened with me.Although I had a tough time with Anita Desai's novels and the same goes for some of the classics like Pride & Prejudice etc but I have never started a book and left it unread..

message 59: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Well, some books are just not worth it especially when you're hard pressed for time. I couldn't read Catch 22 to the end, my mind just kept wandering. But i definitely love the classics! Pride and prejudice, jane eyre, emma are my favourites!!!

message 60: by Meenakshi (new)

Meenakshi (mcoolshi) | 1965 comments @Akansh really?? they are the ones which I hate..I hate romance..it is too romantic!!!!

message 61: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Lol....romance is supposed to be romantic. Nah, what i love about them is the way they portray emotions.....fear, love, acceptance, envy etc etc etc!! And i guess Victorian England has a sorta hold over me.....

message 62: by Meenakshi (new)

Meenakshi (mcoolshi) | 1965 comments England for romance!!!naaaaah...possibly its because of the image that I have of England..its that of treachery, bloodshed, sorrow and anguish..but does'nt matter.
ENGLAND PREVAILS!!

Meenakshi, Just imagine this. We have only one life to live. There are lots and lots of books which we feel like reading. why persist with a single book when you dont like it or are not in the mood to read it? what is wrong in giving up? Why not try other books you like?
These literary journeys are the more so fantastic because you can give up and resume at your mind's ease. It is not an important life's journey or a loving relationship that I am giving up on to be so shocked :-)

I agree with you Akanksha, Pride and Prejudice is one of the most beloved books of English literature. I am not ashamed to say that I have read it nearly 5-6 times. It is not only a a romantic story - it is the conflict between wills and upbringings, between middle class and aristocracy. There is much more to Pride and Prejudice than just a romantic book, though it is honoured as the mother of all chick lits by many

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Yeah i know....its just epic.....infact, Mr. Darcy and his pride was what had me hooked....even i've read it a lot many times. The society portrayed by the book is so convincing, whenever i read it feel drawn into it. What wouldn't i give to be able to live in that era :) Wishful thinking :P

I read a few Pride and Prejudice follow-through books written by modern authors, just to keep in touch with the characters after their marriage; but none were up to the mark ( I am very curious to know whether Elizabeth and Darcy keep on arguing post-marriage too, whether Mrs. Bennett still interferes in her daughters' lives, has Mr. Wickham reformed his ways, so on and so forth)

message 68: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Ha ha....seriously! Elizabeth and Mr Darcy's bickering was so invigorating.....do let me know if there are any stories that go on those lines. I've heard of this book, ' Pride and prejudice and zombies', i haven't been able to read it yet though.

message 69: by Swapnil (new)

Swapnil Sarda | 15 comments I must add 'the fountainhead' as a bs book. I am glad that I didn't finish 'atlas shrugged'. Both from Ayn Rand, the philosopher.

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty- this was a horrible book. I couldnot go beyond a couple of pages. An innocent fairy tale which has delighted children for ages has been converted into a perverted sexual orgy with a sadistic prince and a docile sleeping beauty.

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Oh dear, how can they do that to the fairy tales? I hope u didn't BUY the book!

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments I know, turning fairy tales into Erotica is sick. Infact, a few days back i was reading this article which claimed that Enid Blyton's books are filled with racism and sexual innuendo and aren't appropriate for kids. It said that, The Faraway Tree is, infact, a phallic symbol and E.B.used names like Dick and Fanny coz she was sex crazed. And what's more, it claimed that in most of her book panda's are naughty, she is implying that black people are troublemakers(racism). I never heard anything more outrageous!

message 86: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Those article writers might have been hit by recession!

Nowadays it is too easy to find slight and slander even if it is not intended. Being politically correct all the time is almost an impossible act.

message 90: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments I know!! There's this very interesting line in a book which says, "When we developed etiquettes, we made it easier to forget them and offend people."

Good line !

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Absolutely right. Half the time i end up offending people and i don't even get to know what i'd done wrong.

message 93: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments Generally I finish always the book I start reading even if I don't like them very much but yesterday I abandoned The ice princess.
It is perhaps the second book I don't finish. I remember, roughly 20 years ago I gave up reading another book Family sayings of Natalia Ginzburg. Really boring or perhaps I was too young to read it and should try again.

Family Sayings why did you pick you pick up that book in the first place..it is hopelessly boring!!

message 95: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Dely, you've got to do some light reading. All the books you pick up are either majorly philosophical or totally dull. Have you read ANY sort of fiction?

message 96: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments It depends what you mean with "light reading" because if you mean romance or books like Ken Follett or Twilight I don't like them at all. It would be like wasting my time. I like big classics, biographies, even philosophical books and generally books from which I can learn something new.

Meenakshi, I had this book already in my bookcase and so I decided to read it.

message 97: by Meenakshi (new)

Meenakshi (mcoolshi) | 1965 comments @Dely oh..a bad decision..I wonder how someone can like it!

message 98: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Okay, try reading a Beautiful Mind. Have you read Jane eyre?

message 99: by Meenakshi (new)

Meenakshi (mcoolshi) | 1965 comments @Akansha Are you talking to me? I have read both the books

message 100: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Nopes Meenakshi, i know u read the rite sort of books :-P:-D i was just suggesting some less philosophical books to Deli. And Deli, do read A walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks.
