Barbara | 10 comments I can't find an audiobook topic elsewhere in the group. Please let me know if there's another place for it.

I frequently try to add audiobooks from Recorded Books to my bookshelves. I finally figured out, with help from the Feedback group that the ISBN-13 number sometimes works. However, the icon and description don't always make clear that it's an audiobook. And, this morning, I tried to add The Miracle at Speedy Motors> by Alexander McCall Smith, ISBN-13 number 978-1-4281-8540-1. The board is telling me that the edition is already in the database, but all I find there is the book.

Is there any way to make a more direct connection to The Recorded Books audiobooks in the bookshelves? They are frequently in a league of their own and I'd like to make sure the reference is to that production.

Thank you!!

jenjn79 | 564 comments Barbara, the book you are looking for is here:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22...

What method did you use to search for it? Using the ISBN to search is the best bet to get the edition that you are looking for. I copied and pasted the ISBN 13 you gave above and it gave me the audiobook you were looking for. If you search via the title, then the results will show the book in its popular edition - which will likely be a paperback or hardcover, but if you click on the link for 'editions' you will be able to find all the other editions of the book available.

Barbara | 10 comments Oh, that's exactly what I want, Isis! I went back and did it again and realized that I assumed that icon was for the book edition because it didn't say audiobook until I clicked on it. However, I've had this trouble before which may have been why I assumed I was having it this time.

I've been wanting to add Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem in the Recorded Books addition. The ISBN 13 number is 978-1-4281-0615-4. The only way I could get it was to manually add the book myself which doesn't give the accurate icon and doesn't give the information about narrator, etc. Can you help me with that one?

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Barbara, are you sure that you have the correct ISBN? I can't find any information anywhere on 978-1-4281-0615-4, but there are two audiobooks of Motherless Brooklyn published by Recorded Books here and here. Are either of those your edition?

(If you have an edition that's not in the Goodreads database you can always add it to the database with narrator etc information yourself, of course. I'd suggest double-checking that ISBN, though; it's not showing up in any of the usual catalogs.)

Barbara | 10 comments OK, now I have more clues. That ISBN number is the Library Edition one and I was using the collector edition number, the ones that individuals buy. This helps because now I have all of the narrator information, etc. One small nitpicky thing, is there a reason why I get a generic icon (the gold book cover which is not specific to the audiobook) for Motherless Brooklyn as opposed to the real cover of Miracle at Speedy Motors? And, no book image at all (of Motherless Brooklyn) appears when I put it on my personal shelves, just the message "Book Cover Image Not Found."

Thanks so much again!

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Sometimes Goodreads doesn't have a scan of a book cover available -- if you have one, we can upload it to the book record for you. (There are threads in this group for adding missing book covers if you have more books that are missing images!)

Barbara | 10 comments Thank you! I truly appreciate all the hard work.

Lobstergirl Do some audiobooks now have ASINs?

They always have, if they're from Audible.

Do you know where to find this information? I get a lot of my audiobooks from Audible and frequently have trouble tracking down the correct edition to add.

Sorry, I don't read audiobooks. I know that they have them, but not how to find them.

message 12: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) | 18 comments I was wondering if it is possible to add books that are only listed on Audible?

I have just purchased an edition of Beowulf, but the ASIN number (B0009RFWMU) is only available via Amazon and/or Audible, neither of which, I understand can be used as a source. So, I am not sure if I can add this book to Goodreads or not.

Beowulf [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]
by C. W. Kennedy (Author), Charlton Griffin (Narrator)
Listening Length: 3 hours and 45 minutes
Program Type: Audiobook
Version: Unabridged
Publisher: Audio Connoisseur
Audible.com Release Date: May 20, 2005
Language: English
ASIN: B0009RFWMU

Help very much appreciated.

Regan | 12 comments After some checking, I've discovered that "ASIN" is not what I thought it was, so it's not as relevant. I thought ASIN was an audio version of ISBN, but it is actually an Amazon ID number. Since Audible is now owned by Amazon, all Audible products have Amazon ID numbers. But as GR is no longer using Amazon as a data source it's not really relevant to tracking audiobooks here.

I have numerous questions regarding how to differentiate editions of audiobooks, but some may be answered in the librarian manual, so I'm off to do some reading.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments It is fine to add audible books with asins if you own a copy that you take the details from. What is no longer allowed is for us to go to the amazon sites and copy and paste information from there.

message 15: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) | 18 comments I have downloaded books, however, where the only place that information appears is on the Amazon sites, hence my confusion. iTunes/my iPod only ever show author and title (sometimes chapter title), and I cannot find any details on the publishers site for the Audible audio book I listed above, as well as a few others. So, what options do I have left?

message 16: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Is there a view properties option in itunes? Kindle ebooks show the ASIN if you know where to look.

I don't listen to audiobooks so some one else who does maybe able to tell you where to look.

They can be added with out ASIN/ISBN if no edition with appropriate narrator etc already exists

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) "Get Info" on audible downloads in iTunes doesn't net you more than title, author, narrator and publish date. I have quite a few audible files but haven't really tried to add them to the db for this reason - there just isn't much information on the 'owned' records we can use.
