Hehehe..believe me...my magazine collection of TBR is massive and I own them~! gaaahhh lol No self control when it comes to mags.

Maggie Well, I've just deleted well over 100 books from my TBR list and it feels wonderful! Very liberating. I still have just over 200 on there, most of which I own and either haven't read or want to re-read. Can't tell you how good it feels. Highly recommend a good cleaning out.

Michael (knowledgelost) I actually two TRL's on GR; the normal TRL and TR-on bookshelf list so I know what I still need to buy.

I'm not sure if I'll read all the books on the TRL, but I hope to get to them all

I think you did this already, but make sure you make it exclusive

Maggie Carmel wrote: "So Maggie, how did you decide on the one's you deleted."

Some I didn't even remembering adding so they went. Others just weren't vital enough to remain on there. I'm aiming to make my TBR list more realistic, and not add every second thing I hear about that sounds as if it might be ok.

This sounds silly I guess but I find having an enormous TBR list adds to the pressure in my day, and at the moment I need to reduce whatever pressure / stress I can in my life. And no, I wouldn't describe GR as having anything to do with stress (quite the opposite really), but my life is undergoing quite a few stressors at present (work especially not to mention the usual ongoing issues re family, daughter with ED, financial). So I am attempting to reduce stress anywhere and everywhere.

If only I could resolve some of the other issues in my life as easily with a DELETE button! I'd start with work.

This will only make sense to all you nurses out there - I work full time permanent nights in an acute haematology/oncology unit, 16 beds. We run chemo and blood products overnight, not to mention the occasional iron infusion, intragams plus all the usual IVABs and so on. Our Haem patients are really brittle, they crash with great regularity, MET calls are very frequent overnight, and because they are all neutropenic the consultants don't want them transferred to ICCU unless absolutely necessary, so we keep them. All this and only 2 staff overnight, one of whom is often a graduate or junior nurse, not chemo trained, new to the ward. The pressure on me (or whoever else is senior/working at nights) is enormous, especially when you consider med cover is an intern who hasn't done a haem/onc placement yet, so doesn't know what to do with febrile neutropenic pts, or any other haem/onc emergency eg spinal cord compression. All made worse when I recently discovered that another large public hospital has 26 beds with 5 or 6 staff overnight. So I'm looking at moving but that entails a huge change, including redoing all my chemo accreditation again, and I really don't want to leave where I work. But the stress is ridiculous, even when there are 2 seniors on it can be unmanagable. But as staffing is being cut across the entire hospital, and our unit costs so much because the chemo is so expensive, our chances of getting extra staff is pretty well nil.

Well, that feels better, having got that off my chest. Thanks for cyber listening.

Michael, I have the usual GR "Read/TBR/Currently reading" listing, but in my personal folders I have three TBR's - TBR I own, TBR I can get from the library, and TBR to find elsewhere ie buy. This helps when I'm selecting a new book to read, or when I want to choose books for a challenge etc. I heard about a similar thing on GR and adapted it to suit me.

I have control over my TBR now. When I save a book into my TBR I include some notes to remind myself why I included the book on my list. I keep two lists one of books I own and one for those not yet owned. I recently went through my TBR and deleted those books I realised I would never read. They creep in occasionally.

Adding a note isn't a bad idea

Love the idea of adding a note!! I look at titles, and can't remember why I put it there!!

Maggie! You are totally amazing! I'm with Carmel in that I'm exhausted just reading what you do, and I'm sure there would be much, much more not mentioned! The understaffing of nurses/medical people is horrific! You guys would all be suffering from burn out, your families would suffer, patients too...it's a dreadful situation. Good luck with it all, try to put in some time for you...e.g. massage, relaxation, yoga...Take care...*hugs*

H (halm) Add whatever book catches your fancy to the to-read shelf, and stop buying books until you finish all the books you have on your hands.

I used to buy three or two books every time I went into the bookstore -it was like some book collecting OCD- but after I noticed that my to-read and own-to-read shelves are getting out of hand because they're different, I stopped buying new ones.

I'm already spending too much time looking for books on goodreads than actually reading what I have :-P

I have two lists as well..ones i own and ones i don't but hope to own soon...I cull both lists cause i seem it's important..Only some bookd stay and others go. Sometimes it's hard to make a choice but i see it if the books i cull crop up again then they are a must!

message 68: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 328 comments I also have two lists. The first is for all books I hope to read at some stage. It is a rather long list and just keeps getting longer. I take it to the library to find what I'm after, but end up adding to rather than subtracting. No stress ... I doubt it will ever decrease. The other TBR list is the books I own. I try to decrease this list in the challenges, before buying more. But all this leads me to another problem ... to buy or to borrow ...

It's an ongoing problem that's for sure!!

message 70: by Bron (last edited Jun 13, 2011 02:26AM) (new)

Bron (bron23) | 69 comments My TBR list is quite short 20-30 or so at the moment. I tend to just add things I see I'd like to read as a reminder to find them at some stage. Things I might not think of again. I own plenty of books I haven't yet read but tend not to add them to the list as I will get to them and as they are in the house wont forget bout them. I love owning a big heap of books more than I have read as it means I always have a range of things to chose from when I am looking for my next book. I love the library and find I am using it more and more but I don;t think I will ever be able to give up my book buying addiction.

I can relate to the comment a while back about having some sort of book collecting OCD and its only getting worse! Even my eldest daughter said the other day" you know you mightn't live long enough to read them all" ...

That's so funny Jen, my younger daughter frequently refers to the "explosion of books" in my room. I know for sure that I won't live long enough to read all the books I want to read ... but I'm going to give it a good try!

message 75: by Neko (new)

Neko I'm bumping this thread up....I've just noticed for the first time in AGES my TBR pile is lower than my actual read books on here!

I am so happy I'm currently doing a mini dance...It's been a slow process but there is a light!!
