2010 CR Convention - Minneapolis

Report on Minneapolis Convention
Unfortunately, I can't make New York as Sebastien and I already have a trip planned for then, but I hope I can make Pittsburgh in 2012. Gah! Seems so far off, but time flies.
Roxanne, you must have been exploring on my Web Gallery. Portland was last year. Too bad you didn't know us then. I think New York might be a bigger convention. Exciting!

I didn't know there's a MTM statue!! Makes me want to watch the old episodes.
Lynn, thanks for explaining Gayla. And, Jane, thank you for posting your pictures. I enjoyed them enormously. It made me remember that I cropped my identifying picture here from the one you took of me with my son in Asheville.
Jane, My sister Hayden, and John and I just looked at the slide show of your pictures. She commented, "you all look like you are having so much fun." Well we were. What a fun weekend! Great Pictures! Thank you for posting.
I loved all the pictures, Jane! It occurs to me that I took no pictures at the dinners, so I didn't get any of my own husband! (He only came to dinners and stayed with our friends for the days.) I'm glad you got a shot of me talking, otherwise people would think I'm shy.
The pictures were great. By the way, in Birchbark Books, that is not Erdich's sister, that's Susan White who manages the bookstore.
Thanks, everyone! I always enjoy going back and looking at photos from the other CR conventions. Wendy, I will see if I can edit that caption.
Thanks for the photos, Jane! Lovely house, Philip. And it's so wonderful to see Kathleen in the photos. I so wish I could meet her.

Thanks for posting the link to the pictures - they are great. I didn't know Minneapolis was so beautiful, especially in the Fall. It's also interesting to see the people whose comments I have been reading for the last year or so. I hope to make the next convention.
Lovely, photos, Jane. Thanks for sharing. Minneapolis looks lovely, you all look wonderful, and Jane, you are always so stylish, even when you're casual. I'm looking forward to Pittsburgh since I can't be at the New York CR convention. The bookstore, restaurant, and Philip's house all looked so lovely.
Yulia wrote: "Yes, it made me nostalgic for real bookstores."You mean as opposed to the big chains like Barnes and Noble? We have some here, but I don't go to them simply because they are so far away. (I'm out in the country and get things online.)
A lot of the small stores here were eaten up, too, Yulia, and the Barnes and Noble stores here are very generic. They also seem to cater to people who want to look twenty years younger or make million overnight. To find the good stuff, you really have to hunt. Lots of times they don't have it but say they will order it in. I've thanked them but told them I can get it from Amazon faster and cheaper. (We have Amazon Prime.)The Tudor bookstore in Minneapolis did look so inviting.
Oh, that's a cute name. It really didn't remind me of anything in particular. I just thought it was a lovely bookstore.

But the leaves were already dressed in gorgeous fall colors in Minneapolis - a plus for Californians. Our are just starting to turn, but they haven't turned as much as those in Minneapolis.
We didn't get to visit it, but I want to put a plug in for another fabulous independent Minneapolis bookstore called Wild Rumpus. It's a children's bookstore complete with a whole menagerie: chickens walking around, fish, various amphibians, rats under a glass floor in the "Scary Books" section, and the required cats. Great staff, wonderful selection, and right by a wonderful ice cream shop, Sebastian's. I make an annual visit there with my girls and niece and nephew.
That store sounds amazing. The rats are a wonderful effect. They do put me on edge immediately. How lovely.
COMING SOON!A Series of Motion Photographs featuring certain Members of the Constant Reader Book Group, taken during their late Gathering in the famed Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
IN THIS SPACE EXCLUSIVELY!
I always love seeing my friends in the convention pictures but I HATE seeing myself. I came home, saw the pictures, and resolved to do something about my weight... just like I do every year! :)
PART ONE:Exploring a Garden containing numerous Sculptures; Lynn appears to be highly amused.

PART TWO:Opening new vistas in Art Appreciation, or perhaps Performance Art, Sherry, Jane and Denise mime Conversation with a Statue.

Cool. Even short videos capture a bit more of people's personality than a still shot. As far as surreptitiously filming, I have some sunglasses which film video; the lens is in the nose bridge of the glasses. It doesn't film as nicely as these clips, but it came in handy when I needed hands free on the canopy tour zip-line in Costa Rica.
In other words, if I make it to a future CR convention- watch out for the furtive filmer.
PART THREE:Views inside a Greenhouse containing an unusual Glass Fish.

Thanks so much for posting these, Allen. Maybe it will inspire more people to come to the conventions.
PART FOUR:An encounter with a quite extraordinary Spoon.

A Visit to a Park overlooking the city of St.Paul. Audience Members prone to the Malady of Motion Sickness are especially warned to use caution in Viewing.

This concludes our video presentation from the Twin Cities. However, now that I'm properly YouTubed, for the historically minded I'll be following up with a few more from Santa Fe and Portland in a separate Salon post, most likely later this week.We have here a fine example of the ways that mental habits and attitudes can lag behind technological change. Point something that looks more or less like a traditional still camera at someone and they'll automatically assume you're taking still pictures, despite the fact that they know that all such cameras being made these days can also make videos. I suppose this is the last time I'll be able to get away with this trick, though.
I also hope that CRs who have not yet been to a get-together will take some encouragement here. Really, now -- have you ever seen a more non-threatening group of folks? These are people who pretend to talk to statues, for goshsakes! The next time we come close to where you live, we'll be expecting to see you.
Thanks, Allen, for the pix and the pep talk. I can only second what you said.As for the Park pictures, I can only assume you were tapdancing while filming.
It was also so wonderful hearing several CR voices to add to their images and posts. I can't wait to experience NY with everyone.

Some of your pictures on the river in Portland are within a block of my house. I live in Lake Oswego, right behind that large brick estate on the river - near the park on the water. What a kick that you guys were so close. Wish I had been more with it when you were here. I could have met you. But hopefully New York will happen.
