I too had to remember that when this was published, things like Twitter and facebook weren't around. You couldn't possibly keep the virus a secret these days, even if the government shut down facebook. We'd get too suspicious!

As for the race issue, to play devil's advocate, perhaps all those who survived had a certain gene that protected them, and it only occurs in Caucasians? I know, it's a stretch, but possible.

I was also saddened by Frannie's father's death, but amazed by her resilience in burying him (even though she shouldn't be lifting anything). I agree, though, the neighbor gives me the creeps.
