Bobbie | 32 comments Thanks Marilyn, I can see them now. Those three look good. The authors are ones I had never heard of before Goodreads. So many books, etc.

Well you're in for a treat Marilyn ! Please let us know about the "new" authors and what you thought of their novels, OK ?

I really do love the US Gothic novel covers, but the ones I bought in England look really cheap by comparison. So I'm sticking to amazon US.

Skye | 459 comments Marilyn, please compile a list of all you bought; I am curious!!

Skye | 459 comments Sabrina, I would like to know what you bought, too, and so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't have a FB account: I don't tweet or belong to any social media groups. I share what I do with only the people I choose, and I never post a thing online that could come back to haunt me ( even in e-mails).

message 458: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Michel | 43 comments The first of my "new" Gothic novels arrived today. Dorothy Eden:" The House On Hay Hill". Others I've ordered are: A Gothic Treasure Trove: Moonraker's Bride/The Golden Unicorn/Kirkland Revels/Wings Of The Falcon/Lady Of Mallow/River's Rising. Novels by Dorothy Eden: An Afternoon Walk/The Millionaire's Daughter/Night of the Letter/The Vines Of Yarrabee.
By Jane Aiken Hodge: Red Sky at Night, Lover's Delight/Rebel Heiress/Watch The Wall My Darling.
By Dorothy Daniels:"The Curse Of Mallory Hall". That should keep me busy for a while and I'll have plenty of reviews to post as well. Amazon has lots of novels by Monica Heath and they look pretty good - they seem popular too; but I can't find any of Sylvia Hurd's work, unfortunately. She's been mentioned quite often by several members of the group, so I do hope I'll be able to get my hands on some of her novels as well.Maybe I can try "Thriftbooks".

message 459: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments Thanks SO much, Sabrina! I have read all the Dorothy Eden books as well as the Victoria Holt books above, and Dorothy Daniels; however, the Jane Aiken Hodge books don't sound familiar to me.
BTW Kirkland Revels is WONDERFUL; are you mixing up Florence Hurd and Sylvia Thorpe?

message 460: by Sabrina (last edited Jun 23, 2017 09:17AM) (new)

Sabrina Michel | 43 comments Yes, Skye I am mixing those two up.Thanks for straightening me out !
Yes, I agree 100 % concerning Victoria Holt's "Kirkland Revels". I think it was the second one of her novels I read, the first being "The Shivering Sands". But I can still remember the creepy monk who kept appearing at the foot of the heroine's bed and the nail biting conclusion. Gothic at it's finest !

message 461: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments YIKEs, Sabrina, I have virtually no recall, but I do know it was one of her excellent books; King of the Castle and Bride of Pendorric, as well as Menfreya in the Morning were wonderful.

message 462: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Michel | 43 comments Oh Yeah, I enjoyed all those you mentioned. " Mistress Of Mellyn" was good too , I thought. As well as "On The Night Of The Seventh Virgin".

message 463: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments Yes, I loved them, too. When I was young, my mother belonged to a book club, and in between the book stores ( as well as the libraries) but when Victoria Holt wrote a novel, so did Dorothy Eden and Phyllis Whitney and even Mary Stewart. The others came a tad later.

You got lots of good ones Sabrina! I loved Kirkland Revels as well. I think that one and 'Legend of the Seventh Virgin' are my two favorite Holt books. I notice you bought a book by Dorothy Daniels. Have you read her before? She has a ton of Gothic books but I haven't tried one of hers yet.

These are the ones I've bought since I joined this group! I ADORE the books, and I would love to have each one. YOU GOT JENNIE Melville, too! Were these from Amazon? If so, did you have to pay separate shipping and handling for each one?

Most of these came from Amazon and a few of them from Ebay. Yes, I did pay separate shipping for them. Most of them I paid $10 and under for with a few exceptions. I know I paid $15 for the Awen Castle book but that was the cheapest I could find it. I can usually find a good deal. :-)

Skye | 459 comments Thank you so much for this list, and I may look on thriftbooks. com, too. Barnes and Noble has quite a few, BUT either out of stock or far too expensive. I think there was only one writer I didn't read. I'll let you know which one, too.

message 472: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments Actually about five or six: Sandra Schulman, Patricia Werner, Clara Wimberley, Jane Toombs, Jane Corby and Beverley C. Warren. Keep me posted on those, please.

At least I've got plenty to read for a while! :-D I tried Thriftbooks but couldn't seem to find any better deals there but I'm not a member and maybe if you are you get better buys.

message 474: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments I am not a member of thrift books, either. I am always afraid to use my credit card on line, and only do this with B and N because I originally placed my orders on the phone, and they had a default account, so it works.

Patricia Werner, Clara Wimberley, Janet Toombs and Beverly C. Warren are all from the Zebra line of Gothics that came out in the 80's & 90's. The books I bought by Jane Corby and Sandra Schulman were 70's era Gothics. I'll let you know what I think of them! :-)

Skye | 459 comments Please do, and I hope you love Jennie Melville.

message 477: by Bobbie (new)

Bobbie | 32 comments Great discussion and lists. I have read Kirkland Revels but I have forgotten a lot of it so need to read it again. I do love King of the Castle, one of my favorites. I bought a whole lot of Philippa Carr books (also Victoria Holt) in vintage hardback at our library book sale but still had to get the first in a series before beginning these. I have ordered it so hopefully will start soon. These are more historical and I'm not sure that they are Gothics. Any comments? Of the others mentioned, I have read An Afternoon Walk by Dorothy Eden, more mystery than Gothic, I think.

I agree that An Afternoon Walk by Dorothy Eden was more of a mystery than Gothic. I read that one a while back on my kindle. I really loved King of the Castle as well and another one I really enjoyed was Lord of the Far Island! I just loved the idea of living in a castle on an island! :-) Even though Victoria Holt is definitely my favorite Gothic author I have never read anything she wrote under her other pen names. I should try those soon!

Bobbi, Philippa Carr, aka, Victoria Holt, is the best of the best. I had and read the entire series from beginning to end in order, at least twice Still have a few, but I'm searching for The Miracle at St. Bruno's and The Lion Triumphant.

Skye, I have most of that series but not sure which ones I might be missing. We had a dollar a bag sale (now $2) at our book sale and I got a lot of them in hardback that year.
Marilyn, I really liked Lord of the Far Island, too.

I wonder if you've read "The Firebird" by Susanna Kearsley ? I thought it was full of suspense, but the paranormal/time travel aspect was just a bit too much for me.

Victoria Holt also writes as Jean Plaidy. However, these titles aren't Gothic romances but historical fiction. Some are on the boring side, but many are truly interesting and exciting to read. Many are written in the first person so they have a sort of immediacy which isn't always present in historical novels. Three I would definitely recommend are "The Queen's Confession" (Marie Antoinette) "Queen Of This Realm" ( Eilizabeth I ) and "Lady In The Tower"(Anne Boleyn).

Sabrina, yes, you are right: I have heard many are boring, but I have also heard "Lady in the Tower" is wonderful, and I have it. I never read "The Queen's Confession," though, and she used Victoria Holt as her pen name for that one. If you haven't tried her pen name, Philippa Carr, I strongly suggest you might; they are historical in nature; however, beautifully written and engrossing.

Marilyn | 117 comments Skye wrote: "A wonderful Dorothy Daniels list: I don't believe I have ever read Susanna Kearsley. "

I have read all of Susanne Kearsley's books. I discovered her when I was desperately searching for a new author that was similar to the older ones I love so much! I don't think I would consider her books Gothics. Some are romantic suspense and some I would say are historical romance and then some, like Sabrina said, get into time travel. She is a good writer and I know from following her on Facebook that she greatly admires Mary Stewart. I enjoyed her books.

message 489: by Skye (new)

Skye | 459 comments Thanks, Marilyn, I will definitely look her up; many of these authors write books that don't contain gothic elements but they are romantic/suspense, and sometimes, I enjoy that genre, too. I love suspense and I like the two combined ; however, I've never been a fan on romance alone.

Susannah Kearsley is my daughter-in-law's favorite author. I've not read any of her books myself. They show up in the gothic section, but they just don't seem very gothic like to me. I know she's a great writer though and super popular.

I'm showcasing Dorothy Daniel's titles on my facebook page right now. Come on over and check it out.
