Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) One of the hardest things for me, like many of you, is finishing an excellent book for the first time. Let me explain. I become so attached to the characters and I become so enthralled in the story that I usually end up flying through books. But to me, there is nothing like reading a book for the very first time, so it's always hard to me because I want to fly through it, but I want to savor it at the same time!

Another problem I have is that my bookshelf is absolutely full. It has five shelves and not another book can fit on it. But when it comes time to read a new book, I tend to go to the library or the bookstore first! I've been trying this summer to get over that, and I'm doing okay, but it's so hard sometimes! hehe :)

message 52: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments I hear you on both accounts, Jess. I have plenty of unread, previously purchased books at home, but the bookstore is a sort of sanctuary for me and I can't help going there. Then when I'm there, I always happen to find at least one more thing that I've been wanting to read and Borders doesn't help me with those blasted coupons!

And I love connecting with characters so strongly that it devastates me to finish the book. That's one reason I like owning the really good books. I feel like I still have the characters with me just sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to walk by and smile at them. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this group that lays in front of the bookshelf and reads the read and unread titles over and over again.

I have a feeling I am going to be beside myself whenever I finish Brothers Karamazov. I have been with this book now for well over a week, and im only 250+ pages in. Im reading it slowly, devouring each page, and I can already tell that I will be at a loss when it is over.

But like Jen stated, its good to know they are still close at hand, sitting on the shelf. If I ever want to visit them again, all I have to do is pick it up!

Jen | 278 comments Jeremy - That is so funny and yet not funny at all. I think I was more considerate than that when I was a teen??? I do remember believing that my music was so good that everyone would like to hear it and even turn their radios down just to listen to my music. Ugh. If I could only go back and smack myself.

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Jen - One of my favorite songs has a line "if you hate something don't you do it, too?". And if I played that song loud lots of people would be mad at me. So, yeah, when we were young we were all probably inconsiderate at times without knowing it. This guy wasn't exactly a teenager, though. His 10 year, or so, old son had gotten out of the car with a fishing pole. Anyway, now I'm getting I'm getting all fired up again! :)

That makes me think of my neighbors. Already this morning they had their music in the thier house blasting by 10am. I hear the bass all day long, like I NEED this kind of aggrivation all day long.. sometimes they go late into the nite, and that is when enough is enough. Ive called security on them before, pounded on thier door in my pj's... and they are all adults in there. Gessh! If i can hear what song it is, dude, ITS TOO FRIGGEN LOUD!!!!

Shelly (dreamstonone) | 5 comments When I was in college, the people across the hall used to do the same thing... except they would play their music all night long. It was so loud it sounded like it was in our room. We could sing along to it. I brought one of them upstairs to where our rooms were one time and the first thing he said was, "I'll go tell them to turn it down." But that didn't stop them from doing it again later on, once that kid moved out.

Lori (moderatrixlori) The hardest part for me is making myself put the book down and go to sleep. Fortunately, I don't have to get up really early since I work from home but I still wish I could read through the night!

message 59: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments That seems to be my biggest problem too especially on the days that I have to get up at 6 .....I go to bed early thinking I will only "read for a little bit" then, all of a sudden its 12:30. WTF!!??

message 60: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Most have been mentioned already but:
-when it finished and you want to keep on reading
-which book to start with and when you are reading thinking about all the other you just want to start reading too.
-staying concentrated on your book when you have already decided which one you are going to read afterwards
-getting back to 'real' life after living in a different world (I had it really difficult doing this after I read The Loop)
-enjoying yourself so much ebcause the book you are reading is so good, that you get so excited about it that you can't concentrate reading

I knowit isn't the same but while writing I had to think about a different question: what's the hardest thing about work? My answer will probably explain why I had to think about it: when you can't concentrate on your work because you know your book is in your bag and it is such a good back and you want to read on because you are actually only thinking about the story the whole day but you have to wait till you have a break or till you are finished working ..but but .... this is how I was thinking about a year ago almost every day at work. and I liked my work, but ....

message 61: by Gina (new)

Gina (g1n3) | 103 comments I agree, the hardest thing for me when reading a book is not always getting into it, but getting out of it. I've read many books where I wish it would just go on for one more chapter because if it's well-written with well-developed characters one becomes so engaged in the story one feels as if they are part of it.

I also dislike when the story ends and the reader feels as if some conflicts remain unresolved. The author may have intended for the story to end in this way, but as a reader who becomes a part of the character's conflicts, it's rather frustrating.

message 62: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) The hardest thing for me, these days, is to get off Goodreads before I am too tired to fall asleep!

Seriously, the hardest thing for me is the 1/5 of a book. I either love it and know that I will finish it soon which is slightly upsetting because I want to stay in the book's world, or its heavy going and it seems like that it will never end.

message 63: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 6029 comments The hardest thing for me is returning it to the library, I just want to keep them! and I have trouble with most of the things others have posted too, but the loud music wouldn't even penetrate the fog when I'm really into a book! My mom was so frustrated by this when I lived at home, I would always let stuff boil dry on the stove (burnt beans and exploding eggs), and I didn't even hear her when she was calling me! My daughters now say I'm still that way, they have to stick a hand between me and the book to get my attention! As for a full bookshelf, I live in a four room house and have 12 bookshelves full of books, two full of movies, two full of books on the front porch, and 4-5 full of books in the shed. And I still have then on furniture and tables, and still buy more!

message 64: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) What's hard for me sometimes is deciding whether to continue when you're 1/3 of the way in and it's just not progressing - or 1/2 way in. Do I keep going? Do I put it down? There are so many TBR!!

Some people say give it 50 pages, then if you don't like it, put it down, but I can't always do that. Depending on who recommended it, I feel like I have to press on.

Readers guilt, ACK!

message 65: by Coalbanks (new)

Coalbanks | 186 comments A lot of common problems here. For me: How to maintain interest & enjoyment when always being interrupted!

message 66: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments cool question...

i agree that ending a great story is the hardest thing about reading.

another toughie is not liking a book everyone says you should like, just because of the series, author, subject, etc...

i also find it hard when you get into a series or a group of characters, then the author ends their story. i always want to keep finding out more, and it sucks that you can't.

message 67: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandadiane) | 23 comments Ugh whenever I start a new book, I'll be about two chapters until the end and get impatient and want to read a new book. I rarely read the end of the book, I usually just look up what happens.
It's frustrating at times.

message 68: by Jill (new)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments The hardest thing for me is concentrating on just one. I usually have three or four going at once because I don't want to wait until I'm done with a book before picking up another one.

message 69: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments -which to read next. I always want to read them all.
-When the book is done but I want to keep going.
-Having to put the book down to go to work. I mean really work is overrated.

I also agree with Maria, I find it so hard when I read a book so many people have talked about only to not like it. I feel like I am missing something.

message 70: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Jill, Totally agree on the one book at a time method. But even when reading four or five, when the members on GR start recommending other books, I begin to doubt my sanity. I just want to run out, get one of the recommendations and add that to the list of books I am reading at one time. There are not enough hours in the day/days in the week, to read everything at one time and get anything done.

message 71: by Jess (new)

Jess I agree with many of you. One of the hardest things for me is to realize you're getting near the end of the book and suddenly you don't want it to stop! And if there is a sequel, it sucks to wait for it to come out.

another issue is of course, trying to balance time between being able to read and having to go to work and do graduate school work. it's a pain in the ass, i wish i could just sit around and read and somehow make money off of it!
