Hm...maybe I'll just hold off until I just don't have *any*thing to read. Of course, one look at my overflowing bookshelf would make that seem like an impossibility.

Yeah, maybe I'll do a combination of both. Who knows? We'll see what works when the time comes. Heh.

Madeline theyre really quick and easy though adn funny and random and genius and im getting carried in my procrastinating.
which reminds me...
one more piece of advice? Stay off goodreads as much as possible during nano. its so addictive a way to procrastinate you wont get any writing done. and we'll all be yelling at each other to get off but nobody wants to so it just continues...

Haha, the random circle of procrastination. I love it. I am a huge procrastinator, but I am going to have to get over that for November. It’s only thirty days. The more I think about it, the more excited I get.

Madeline haha good =) i love it when people are excited about this

Adrienne Hi,
This will be my very first NaNoWriMo and I'm a bit nervous. I guess the basic goal is to write 50k words in 30 days. Are there any tips or anything in the meanwhile? I went over to the forums page on the official site and am a bit overwhelmed, and not even sure where to start looking for advice. So, I thought I'd try over here. Any advice for a newbie?

Thanks!

Ez (ezrah-rah) Hi, Adrienne! The only thing that I can suggest you can do in the meantime is outline (if that's your thing) so you can have a feel of your overall plot and maybe work on your characters (i.e., coming up with little bios with their names, what they look like, etc.). As far as I understand, all that kind of stuff is allowable as long as you don't do any actual writing before Nov. 1st.

Snow (kdskid007) Yep, outlining and working on characters is perfectly okay in October, November, or whenever you start your writing. As for tips, write as much as you can whenever you can, so that you can hit a day or two or writers block and not fall behind. Stay off distracting websites until your wordcount is more or less hit for the day, and http://writeordie.drwicked.com/ is an AMAZING site for keeping you typing, if you prefer to type things. I think that's all I've got, so yeah. Have fun!

Oh yeah, and I'm not a fan of Lemony Snicket, sorry guys. :(

Madeline thats ok, not everyone is

I started an advice thread and (assuming u have no problem with it Candace(if you do just let me kno, i'll change it, im just felling lazy now haha)) i posted a conversation between me and Candace in which i basically gave all the advice i could think of. plus my random post above

I have no problem with it :). If it helps others, I'm all for it.

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) I'd outline and write A LOT, Adrienne. haha That saved me last year. Good luck!

Kat Kennedy (katkennedy) | 13 comments I like reading the author blogs to see what's happening and taking the various Mary Sue tests for all my characters. Some of those are quite amusing!

Cathy (cgraceh) | 11 comments This is my first year participating in NaNoWriMo and i"m really excited!! Glad to see all the particiaption her and on the NaNoWriMo boards,...any suggestions for first timers?

I read somewhere (I think under NaNo FAQs) about settting your sights low so that you don't feel overwhelmed and really spend time as creatively as possible rather than getting bogged down by pressures or editng etc.

Any tips from newbies or vets??

Thanks!

message 64: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (chasmofbooks) Personally, I set my expectations high to that I'll get to where I want to be. For example, I'm going to try to be atleast a day ahead of myself throughout the month that way if I miss a day, it won't be a big problem. Of course, I'm shooting for 70,000 words this year so we'll see how that goes...

Veronica (v_a_b) Perhaps a combination of the two? Set your sights low overall. Tell yourself that even if you don't make it to 50k, you will get to 25k--halfway there. Once you reach that goal, set your sights 5k or 10k higher, depending on how much of the month you have left. Meanwhile, tell yourself that you are shooting for 2k a day, that way, it's okay if you fall short one or two days.

Also, follow your instinct. If you feel like something isn't working, fix it anyway you think will work. For example, your characters are, say, stuck in the woods too long and you're getting bored, so go ahead and do something crazy to get them unstuck. This could include skipping ahead a few chapters and writing a sex scene (suggestion from a friend of mine), including naked women with machine guns (another from her), or tossing in the traveling shovel of death. Keep in mind that you'll have plenty of time to edit later. Writing preposterous scenes can at the least kickstart your story again, and perhaps even have some valuable writing and/or become important to the plot.

If you find yourself browsing GR or the nano site or the internet in general, and it's not for research for your story, I recommend temporarily unplugging your internet. If you still find yourself unable to focus, it might be a good idea to check out Write or Die. (on the right side of the page) You can choose a forgiving grace period and gentle mode if all you want is to keep focus (it motivates you to stay on the page) and the other options if you really need motivation to get your fingers moving.

Also, the topic of this post seems like a rather good idea! (which you can probably see if you scroll down on the original link... but in case you didn't see it)

Cathy (cgraceh) | 11 comments Thanks to both for the suggestions! I can get swamped with work or whatever and then may have to make up time so I liek the combination idea..also the turning off the internet! I may have to do that all the time...or mnaybe just write somehwere without a wifi connection...

Also I like the practice exercises both by using Google Scribe and Write or Die. Thanks much
