The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is brilliant, isn't it? I bought a copy for my son a few years ago. One of those books to keep and treasure I think. I'll have to keep an eye out for Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick - let us know what you think of it.

Valerie | 95 comments Well, not that I just bought it, but had on pre-order for months.... just received Persuasion An Annotated Edition by Jane Austen . Such a beautiful edition, and I LOVE all of the annotations & illustrations along the page edges! The publisher, Harvard University Press, is supposed to have plans to do all 6 Austen books in this format. I got the first one last year, which was Pride and Prejudice An Annotated Edition by Jane Austen , and the editor who worked that one is supposed to be working on an edition for Sense & Sensibility. Looking forward to adding that one to my collection too!! :)

message 224: by Chrissie (last edited Nov 22, 2011 09:35AM) (new)

Chrissie Judy, I loved the Secret Garden. Who wouldn't?! Nobody reads The Lost Prince, by the same author. It is in fact even better.

ETA It was not the plot that engaged me really, but how I felt for Marco and the Rat. I was in their shoes. When they were hurt, I was hurt. When they were happy, I was too. The author made me, a child, feel complete empathy for these two fictional characters.

I wonder if I would love it so much now, but for me then it was one of the best books ever written. That is why I have given it 5 stars.

Oh one thing I can tell you, in the story we meet again with the Sempere family and the cementery of the books :)

message 229: by Michelle (last edited Nov 23, 2011 06:12AM) (new)

Michelle (lonelydoll21) | 84 comments I just bought 3 books for my (almost) 9 year old daughter for Christmas. They are in the Friendship According to Humphrey series, about a classroom hamster. They are all written from his point of view. And since I needed to reach the $25 threshold on Amazon.com to get the free shipping I just HAD to buy something for myself, right? So I ordered Earth Abides - an older book that I have been having a hard time tracking down. It's been on my TBR list about a year.

message 230: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2362 comments Oooo I read Earth Abides in February after discovering it in my local library and I loved it. Have you read it before Michelle? If not I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

message 231: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (lonelydoll21) | 84 comments No, I haven't read it, Sam. I think I learned of it from an author interview with the author of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle - one of his favorites/influential books. Patiently waiting for my package to arrive from Amazon!

Sue Anne told me about the sale at Bookcloseouts and went a little crazy. 2 books of poetry, 3 books of short stories, Purple Hibiscus, Remarkable Creatures, Fire in the Blood, All Our Worldly Goods, The Golden Notebook, In the Time of the Butterflies, and The Sorrows of an American.
Prices are very inexpensive.

Sue Bad, bad, bad you two. I wish I could but I set a budget for today. Maybe I'll go back for their day after Christmas sale---they must have one of those.

message 249: by Sue (new)

Sue OK, one last confession of the day. I did have one last purchase planned for today....I had a few things in my cart at Amazon that I didn't want to lose. I just went, knocked a couple out and added The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Among the sale books was The Enchantress of Florence, After Rain. So I did well or was crazy today depending on perspective.

You may tease....I definitely deserve it.

Well I hope it arrives soon for you, I favour stalking the postman until they arrive, it seems to speed things along (or it might just distract me enough that it doesn't seem so long, either way it works)!
