Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I haven't read any of the Warriors books, but I will. I checked with my daughter-in-law first and she thinks they'll be all right for Teri-Lynn to read. Maybe she'd like her grandma to read them to her? It's an idea anyway.

House of Leaves was mentioned in another group as one of the scariest books ever. It sounded to me like a must-read.

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I haven't read a lot of books about pets. I saw the movie "Marley and Me" and cried my eyes out.

message 153: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Two absolutely wonderfull books about pets are: Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog Review : http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... and Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl. My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Janice, have you read Wesley yet? I liked Marley too, but not as much as these two.

I've got books, ebooks, and audiobooks all lined up, patiently waiting to be read. They are all listed on my TBR and To Be Listened to shelves.

message 157: by Lori (new)

Lori Baldi I just bought and started to read The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer . It is starting out great. It's going to keep me busy for a while. I was intrigued when I first heard about this book and I'm thrilled that I was able to get it and start it.

message 169: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I haven't been to the book store in so long. But I was really proud of myself, I did go wild and spend all of my money.

I bought A Great Deliverance (Inspector Lynley, #1) by Elizabeth George Shanghai Girls by Lisa See The Rape of Nanking The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II by Iris Chang and because I thought this book would be very interesting a book called "Jews in the Twentieth Century".

message 170: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Thanks Judy. I can hardly wait to start one of them. However I'm in the middle of The Bookseller of Kabul by Åsne Seierstad , The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and trying desperately to get into and read The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber for a book challenge. And I just couldn't resist buying the book by Elizabeth George because I've heard so many good things about it .It revolves around a Scotland Yard Inspector Thomas Lynley.

message 171: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I listened to The Forgotten Garden in audiobook format and really enjoyed it. I then bought the paperback because I enjoyed it so much, leant it to a friend, and haven't seen it since. I know she'll eventually give it back to me. She's in a reader's block.

message 173: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Dem, I'm only about a forth of the way through it but I'm really enjoying it. As a matter of fact it was due back at the library yesterday so I plan on reading only it until I finish it. Which is great because I can't wait to see what happens next!

message 174: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments I finally received the three books I bought on ebay for my year-long challenge, Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl, December 6, and The Turquoise Ledge: A Memoir. I'm so excited!

Michelle (lonelydoll21) | 84 comments Hi All,
I don't do eBooks but I know many of you do...a friend recently posted a link to wowio.com that advertises free eBooks. Might be worth checking out...

I, myself, need to hold an actual book in my hands. :)

message 176: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Michelle, I found no downloads to Kindles. Is this correct?

message 177: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments It looks interesting! I'll have to download one to see if it works on my ipad. Thanks for the link, Michelle.

It doesn't look like it's compatible with Kindle, Chrissie. Maybe try downloading one = they're free, so you won't be out anything. I'm not sure how you would downloand it though.

I have a piece of software on my pc which converts epubs and other formats to kindle/mobi. Its called Calibre available for free from http://calibre-ebook.com/ (Seems safe and virus free). You can use it to manage ebooks downloaded from free sites like manybooks.net and gutenberg and to upload stuff from your pc to kindle or other gadget.

message 181: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Alison, I will check it out. Thank you very much!

Always Something There to Remind Me by Beth Harbison A Hopeless Romantic by Harriet Evans Jane Austen Ruined My Life by Beth Pattillo The Women of Pemberley (The Pemberley Chronicles, #2) by Rebecca Ann Collins How to Bake a Perfect Life by Barbara O'Neal To The Moon and Back by Jill Mansell Already Home by Susan Mallery

message 185: by Lori (new)

Lori Baldi I picked up 2 books at the half price store last night: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith and an oldie
My Ántonia by Willa Cather .

Both are possibles for my next read.

message 186: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 95 comments Judy wrote: "Wow! Valerie, you are ambitious. Happy reading! I'll be watching for your review of Jane Austen Ruined My Life, the title by itself is intriguing..."

I've had the book on my to-read list for a while, and finally found a copy in the store! Of course, it was the ONLY one in the store! LOL

message 187: by Lori (new)

Lori Baldi Funny you should ask about my experience with Willa Cather. My Antonia is a book that has been on the edge of my radar screen for years. I haven't read any of Cather's work but something has urged me to dive in and this one seemed like a good fit. The reason that I brought up the recent purchase, though, is that I had bought a clearance book at this same half price store a few weeks ago (spent $2.00) and when I opened the book found it to be covered in highlighted sentences and writing in the margins. Covered. Luckily I noticed it right away and had the receipt. But I felt like such a cheapskate! The purchase the other night was a perfect edition-but I checked first. Learned my lesson.

thanks, but I can't find it. How did you set up notification emails for kindle sales? Do you remember?

Judy, I wish I had bought I Am The Messenger on sale. I read 24% and stopped reading. Just not my type of book. But a lot of GR readers liked it, so go figure. Maybe I was too quick to judge it. If you read it and like it I'll give it another chance.

Janice (jamasc) | 60011 comments The Kindle sale must just be in the States, because it doesn't show up for me in Canada. Ha! Maybe that's a good thing. :)

Yes, do. I re-read the beginning. I feel like I read more of the book than is indicated on my kindle. I seem to remember more, but I might be confusing it with another book. I'll have to search around the story and see.

I actually read Messenger before Book Thief. I enjoyed both and yes, Messenger is a very unique story but well worth it. A quick read. I recommend it because you will be impressed with Zuzack's ability to write to very different stories in two very different styles. Anxiously awaiting more from him!

Hi, am new(ish) to GR but thought I'd just add my 2cents worth - I loved Messenger and like you Michelle, read it before Book Thief and I think I liked it more. It was just so different and unique and I liked that it had a message behind it all. I'd say definitely worth another shot Judy, although I would say that it definitely has some horrible moments, so if you don't like that kind of thing it might be best to stay away.

I just picked up Nightshade and Soulstice from my local bookstore and then I was glued to the couch for a few days trying to finish them as quickly as possible.
I thought that Nightshade was a pretty good book; not the most amazing thing ever, but still good. It was a little hard to follow all of the information being given, but by the end of the book I understood most of it.
Soulstice was amazing, and pretty scary; a good thing for a horror series to aspire to. As the second book in the series I was a little surprised by how quickly things escalated, but it worked. some of the visuals towards the middle/end of the book were things I just really didn't need in my head, but still fascinating. The end was perfect for the story too. This book rocked

When I left for home this morning, my dad gave me The Lincoln Lawyer and The Bone Garden.
