I can't remember the name of a book. It's about a single mother who falls in love with a swindling salesman who coerces her into putting money into his "project" and she starts traveling with him and leaving her children behind. It's told from the perspective of one of the kids. I remember the book cover or part of the cover being red, and for some reason I think the word Town was part of the title. Random, I know.

It sounds a bit like "Songs in Ordinary Time" by Mary McGarry Morris - although I only got about halfway through that book, so I'm not entirely sure. Hope that helps.
