Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Merry Christmas (belatedly) and a happy holidays to everyone! I hope you all are having a great holiday season. I also haven't been as active on GR as I would like this year. School has kept me pretty busy and I haven't been reading as much as I would like.

message 2609: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Sounds like a good New Years Resolution for all would be to check in more often and comments --- anything. The wilder the better, of course, but even stopping in to say Hi is something.

And in the spirit of Off Off Broadway, here is something Off Off Topic: Does anyone use an iPad? I can't find a way to Comment on GR on mine (iP 3 with iOS 8. Am I missing something?

My Android ereader (Kobo Arc 7) is OK for quickies, but GR on it often loses all my careful typing right before posting, and I'm often too tired and disgusted to start over.

Why can't I comment on iPad?

message 2610: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I haven't even upgraded to 8 yet.... Partly because I hate change, partly because it takes up too much damn room and I don't have anything to delete besides books and I don't want to do that yet! I could download them again when I want to read them, but if I do that I will forget them, etc, etc, etc.

message 2611: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments @Llaph The consensus seems to be Don't upgrade to ios 8. I only did for a super expensive training course that turned out to be a complete scam, and I am very sorry I did.

message 2612: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Accessibility bugs and issues are a big thing to me. Going from 6 to 7 was a bit of a change. It used to be if there was an upgrade I would wand is asap, but I have to think about accessibility now first. People wouldn't believe the amount of features get busted with upgrades. It is frustrating because a lot of the really good apps require ios 8. I will upgrade eventually, but it isn't a high priority.
That really sucks about that seminar. I'm guessing there is no way to get your money back. It really really sucks how people work to take advantage of others. That scan where people pretend to be from microsoft and get access to your computer... Really people the amount of time you spend on making up schemes could actually be used to make money legit.

message 2613: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments The guy gave what I now know to be fraudulent fake demo to sell his expensive course and the use of proprietary software that I found to be useless. I think TFC and/or FCC may be interested. As far as I can tell, the rigged demo was fraud, pure and simple. So, no, no refund. He is a crook.

message 2614: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments I typed F T C (federal telecommunications commission). Android changes the darndest things!

message 2615: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Oh no, Kathleen. That's awful! That definitely sounds like something you should report. Have you heard of anyone else getting scammed by this?

message 2616: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments He sells by staging these fake demos at webinars, so possibly hundreds have been scammed.

message 2617: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Wow, that seems like a lot of people have been affected. Maybe the authorities are already looking into it?

message 2618: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Probably not. That his system does not work is not a crime. That he has to have faked the demo makes it fraud.

message 2619: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Most scams go unreported because either people don't realize they've been had, or they don't want to think so---too embarrassing.

message 2620: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments This is random, but I had to bitch somewhere.

I hate *hate* when goodreads does "upgrades" they always screw up stuff for people who are used to one thing... Mostly screen readers. I got used to their having accessability issues regarding navigation, but changes to what I used to by pass those issues are annoying. For instance my routine when viewing a thread.
1. I go to the page, hit ctrl end to start at the bottom.
2. hit shift b to go up by button (one letter navigation from screen reader).
3. Hit shift v to get to the last page (if I have visited the page before it will work otherwise I do something else)
4. shift g to go by the avatars for each person's name so I can go post by post.

The change--instead of saying the name of the person like it used to it spits out a stupid random bunch of numbers which is a pain in the ass for me. I had to listen to this crap on my updates page where I see the updates from the people I am following, which is annoying too, but I didn't expect it to show up in messageboards too. pfft

On a good note, wedsmorning my sister had her twins. Both around 5 lbsish. My mom had to make sure to come tell me at 4 am....
I keep forgetting to send her a text congratulating her and letting her know that I am glad our over achiever gene didn't hit at that time and she decided to spit out another baby.

message 2621: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Ugh, update page is worse instead of stupid numbers I have to here:
57596047 ref=ru_lihp_up_us_3_m…
Instead of "Five Weeks"
Imagine all of those f'ing syllabls I have to listen toinstead of just "Five Weeks".... grrrr

message 2622: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Llaph, this is a big issue and something GR should really be on top of. Have you thought about posting in the GR support group? They deal with all sorts of bugs and stuff there.

They probably aren't aware of the issues you're dealing with, which is no excuse because they really should be testing for this type of thing, but sometimes I think if you don't kick up a fuss, nothing ever gets done.

message 2623: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments The Good reads interface seems to be different on every platform....for no good reason. Recently they decided the list of threads on the Android app was too easy to read, so they lightened the already light typeface to pale gray, on beige. Too care of that! No more legibility for you!

The Mac app is so busy and poorly organized that I can't find anything, so I hate it and never use it.

And last but not least, the iOS version (iPhone, iPod and iPad) doesn't allow me to add comments. I don't mean it doesn't work right; I mean there is no provision for it: strictly Amateur Hour! GRrrrrrttr!!!!

message 2624: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I flat out refuse to download the GR app for this very reason. I either wait until I get to my laptop or I just don't go on at all. Honestly I will never understand what goes through some developers' heads when they make these sorts of ridiculous decisions. I've seen college students goofing off put more care and thought into the apps they create than GR sometimes.

message 2625: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I find the app convenient if all you want to do is read the comments, but if you want to do more than type a sentence or two, it's a pain. You can't add books into a comment, and you can't edit the inevitable typo that you'll make typing on a mobile. I'll take a PC or laptop with a proper keyboard every time!

message 2626: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I don't understand the purpose of a mobile app that doesn't actually let you participate in the site. It just seems like a waste of space on my phone. The only time I ever really use GR when I'm out is at a bookstore where I want to check my to-read shelf.

message 2627: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments @Lannister: I should do that, but I keep forgetting. >< Everytime GR has upgraded stuff gets busted for me and if I wait a while it sometimes gets fixed or I just find another way around what I used to do. One of the main reasons I don’t is because their forums are a pain in the ass to navigate if you don’t already have a good idea of how to do it. I remember a few times going to the feedback forum and trying to find an answer or where to post and give up because it is a pain. I know there are other blind people that use GR (I remember seeing some groups) but I gave up looking for one reason or another. Guess it is time to look again! I will try harder this time…. I remember I had to email CS to ask wtf I logout of GR because I couldn’t find out where unless I switched to the mobile sight first. Apparently you can do that by clicking on your profile picture? I can’t navigate that stuff with a screen reader as I am not a pro @ using a screen reader. Some people can do some crazy stuff with one, but having to hit this switch then this and this blah blah all to do one thing is too much crap for me to figure out so I skip it. Guess I am lazy? 10 minutes of work to do something that was designed for a sighted person to have to only spend 10 seconds on just frustrates me and makes me say f’it. I specifically told CS that I was blind, using a screen reader, and that list of instructions that she gave me did not work for me. You know what she did? She gave me the direct link to the sign out page so I could bookmark it. @Claire: That is so very true. I don’t think they test out what they do before they change it to be honest. If it sounds good on paper it is fine—worked for communism why not the GR app? @Kathleen: I am still using Ios 7 so I don’t have that same issue. I still can’t edit my comments or add a book to a comment—which is plain stupid. I just use the GR app to catch up on threads or look up a book. It is a lot easier for me to check threads and books with the app and if I want to reply or look deeper into something I go to my computer.

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Does anyone know how general status updates work? For instance is there a checkbox that needs to be checked in my settings? I'm pretty sure, but you can't delete them right? Does basic html code work in them?

I just ask because I was using another account and posted a general status update and couldn't find it to check on it or delete it.
Performing google-fu I couldn't find a straight answer. Plus, I am lazy sometimes and having someone who knows tell me what is up is easier.

message 2629: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I actually have no idea because I never post those. Sorry!

I've been kinda M.I.A. from the group lately. Mainly it's because I haven't found anything new to read. I'm deep into a slump!

message 2630: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments Hi Guys, am back. This time sticking around for sure. Married life is interesting... and too much has happened december - result - I haven't read a single book this year. Sigh.

Am hoping to fix that soon.

Anyways... I know its a few months late, but if you want to see wedding pictures, please let me know and will message you a link. It'll be the same album that I made on facebook.

I was just thinking of you (really!!!)!

I'm so glad you're back!

Hope you'll find some time to read soon!

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Arushi!!!! Show us the photos!!!! Please!!!! Links!!!!

message 2633: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Yes, so glad you're back and definitely want to see the wedding photos :)

I've been absent lately due to graduate school apps and an exam. Luckily, I heard back from the first school I applied to and I was accepted! So no matter what, I have some place to go next year. And I got an A- on my graph theory exam, so the studying paid off!

message 2634: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Hey, Claire, congratulations! Glad you are back.

message 2635: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Thank you! I'm hoping to read more now. Some of my favorite authors have books coming out this month.

message 2636: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Oddly I can't read any GR posts on Android devices today, but I can on Mac & iPad, no problem...except that, as normal, you can't write comments on iPad.

I checked all devices over the same cable internet server, so that's not it.

I can navigate through the lists of threads in the group, but if I click on a thread, I get a message saying "A problem occurred and GoodReads may be temporarily unavailable."

But I've been getting that all day on Android devices.

Anyone else seeing GR issues on Android?

Zoltan Makacs | 549 comments It may have been a temporary issue that got fixed in the meantime, but it seems fine for me (assuming it manages to post this :D )

message 2638: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Hhhhm. It seems to be a GR Android app problem for me. Still not working.

I'm writing this in Chrome.

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Hah! Android's back. For now.

message 2640: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Okay I just an ad in the sidebar for the Goodreads dating app. Please someone tell me this is an April Fool's joke, and GR isn't turning into another ridiculous social network

message 2641: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I automatically thought it was an April fool's joke and feverantly hope that I'm right.
It would just be wrong, so wrong, otherwise.

message 2642: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I'm excited to say I've been accepted to a fully funded Ph.D. program in Applied Mathematics at North Carolina State University! So I'm pretty sure I'm going to accept the offer....I'm moving to Raleigh, NC for the next few years. I'm very excited but also terrified.

Originally I applied for a Masters, but a graduate admissions professor asked me to consider switching my application to a PhD since that program is funded. I figured "why not?" And it paid off! So I basically got into a PhD program by accident. My life feels a little surreal right now!

That's awesome!

message 2647: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Thanks everyone! I am also slightly terrified. This is a big move for me, and I'm nervous about being a TA and having to teach, and also being good enough at Ph.D work. I'm trying to remind myself that I shouldn't let being scared stop me from such an awesome opportunity.

message 2648: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Hope everyone who celebrates today being Mother's day had a good one. Me and my sister took my mom for a pedicure, lunch, & shopping. She insisted on getting the hot rock massage that my sister usually gets. I just keep thinking of her being beaten with rocks ... so I basically said that I'm all for paying someone to beat her with rocks. It sounded funnier when I commented that on the FB post she did including a picture of our feet. <>

On a side note my cousin Bobby lamented on FB that he had finished listening to a series and needed a new one to read now. So I suggested the Dresden Files, he said he finished that and Butcher's other series. So I suggested the Iron Druid and Pax Arcana series and ran a blank after that. Yes, we have some similar tastes, but I don't feel right suggesting a series like Kate Daniels or Cassie/Dori.... Mainly because he was the first ever boy's diaper I ever had to change. All of my other cousins are girls.... Needless to say he peed on me, I ppanicked and tossed a sheet over him, ran out to the living room where my mamaw was and told her hysterically that OMG BOBBY PEED ON ME. So yeah, not gonna req a series that has a strong romantic element to it. Plus, Thanks to his dad he tends to be a misogynistic asshat at times.

message 2649: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments The guy I used to share books with couldn't get into the Cassie books ("too much estrogen"), but he loved "kickass" Dori.
