LOL Without being in school and not celebrating easter, the easter holiday season just flies by me w/out noticing. lol
someone was just like "oooh wanna do something for easter" and I was like? it's easter already!?!? lol it was very funny at the time.
Okay, Happy Holi Everyone!!! (tho I am a bit late - it was on 26 & 27 March. So much fun playing with colors) Oh and Happy Good Friday :)
Holi makes me wish I grew up Hindu... all those colors. LOL we played with colors for my wedding celebrations (the second day celebration).
Still deboxing figurines. I deboxed 12 of them today. I really underestimated just how much of these that I'd left undisplayed. I knew there were a lot of them, but sheesh! I guess I know what I'll be working on all weekend.
What's your new avatar, Zeenat? Also, what does everything think about the Amazon takeover of Goodreads? Any thoughts, or are you indifferent?
The equal sign is for human rights equality, the red background equal sign is for marriage equality currently under consideration by the U.S. Supreme Court.
As for Amazon takeover, I wonder if each book page will continue to list links to the B&N site.
I am also leery of all those horrid self-published books from Amazon's Createspace clogging up Goodreads.

Ah, thanks for letting me know Enjee. I'd read about it in the news and I strongly support your beliefs.I simply can't see Amazon allowing Goodreads to send potential purchasers to B&N/Book Depository/wherever. If that's the only change though, I can live with it. I suspect Goodreads is already beginning to get infected with self-published overload (not that I'm criticizing every self-pub book - there are some gems out there). Goodreads seems to be getting worse and worse for pushy, spamming authors. I think it's just a sign of how much the site has grown in the 2.5ish years I've been on it. The larger it gets, the more of a spam magnet it becomes.
I meant to ask you guys about the Amazon takeover. Who ran GR before this? If it's going from individuals to Amazon, then I'm not happy. I'm having nightmares of ad overload!
I'm not so sure this whole Amazon/Goodreads thing will be a good thing. I'll be happy if things don't drastically change. So long as the site doesn't become Baby Amazon, I think I can deal.
Claire, I believe it was founded by a couple of individuals and they grew the site with the help of venture capital money.I'm not too worried about ads. I never see 'em anyway thanks to Adblock. The tech news reports I read seemed to think Amazon would probably mostly leave the site alone. That's only speculation of course, but Amazon has tended to do that in the past (they bought over IMDB and Zappos, for example).
I think Amazon would be foolish to change the site too much, because Goodreads already has a ready-made market of readers just waiting to buy books, and big changes will only make them leave. I could see a set up where you tie your Goodreads login to your Amazon account. As you browse Goodreads, there'll be a button next to each book and you'll be able to buy right there without leaving the site. If you have a Kindle, that could actually be very convenient. However, if you hate Amazon, it might be annoying. Little changes like this make sense and wouldn't bother me. It would be stupid to bombard us with ads, because in some ways, the whole of Goodreads is a giant ad for books, with some forums thrown in on the side to keep people on the site. Amazon doesn't need to woo us, we're here already!
I hope they improve GR search, because it is diabolical.
I think Kindle and amazon will be tied together a bit. Like if you rate a book on kindle, it'll also update your goodreads... That I don't mind. mainly cause I have a Kindle. LOL! I also hope it'll help with posting reviews, since now I post it on 3 different places, and hopefully with the merger I can just do it to one and cover the other. Otherwise, my worry is the push for goodreads to be more commercialized. I just hope there won't be a "goodreads plus" where you'll have to pay to get benefits.
I worry about things like promoting authors. right now Goodreads is still a bit of a close knit community. Author's fans can be rabid about authors. But merging with Amazon might make it more, commercial, again. I'm thinking you would need to get tickets to go to an author's chat. Ehhh, we'll see.
Quick comment unrelated to the current discussion.I laughed my ass off at this: Hello friendly side-of-juice-package reader.

Regarding GR search. Yeah, I tried to search for a book title and left off an s at the end and it didn't show any results yet some titles give me tons of unrelated titles. It's weird.
'Kay so I'm trying to share a picture of my latest baking adventure with you guys, but I have no idea how to do it. It seems like I can only insert a picture that's on a website. *grump*And that's sort of what I'm concerned with- the quality/ease of site usage losing a battle against amazon's desire for more money.
Why do you think they sold the site?
The simple guess is they sold the site for money. It's every Silicon Valley startup's dream to get sold to one of the big boys and the figure I read in the press was that they got about $150 million, possibly up to $200 million. However the Goodreads founders don't walk away with that cash. They'll have traded away part ownership of the site in exchange for investment money, and those guys were possibly pushing for a sale. But, in truth, if you started a site like this and someone like Apple/Google/Facebook/Amazon came along and offered you hundreds of millions, I don't think there are many people who wouldn't take the money. Especially if the founders still remain in their jobs running the site.
Claire, do you have an account at somewhere like Photobucket or Imgur? Or Dropbox? You can upload your image there and either post the link or embed it in your comment. If you're stuck, let me know and I'll PM my email address to you and you can email it to me and I'll upload to my web space.
Yeah, isn't it. There's nothing like opening a thread and seeing a comment that goes "I'm reading [little green square]". How hard would it be to even include a text link, if not the book cover. I don't get it.
Amazon merger. Here is the official announcemnt if anyone missed it.http://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/41...
I have to say I am not happy, though no doubt it's a great move for Elizabeth and Otis as entrepreneurs.
It's a shame that another independent organisation is going to be swallowed up by a huge corporation and inevitably directly linked to sales. I don't want my profile owned by Amazon. I joined Goodreads because it was independent of other social/sales networking sites.
i mean selling to a company like Amazon is BIG for entrepreneurs. So good for them. but I'm with you Anna, I just hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of big corporation...
Anyone seen any good April Fools gags on the web today? Google always goes in for this in a big way. Here's a couple:Gmail Blue:

Google Nose:

Neither of them is all that funny though. Anyone seen anything better?
My best friend is getting married!!!!!! *jumps around all hyper* The functions start from tomorrow and so I will be gone till Monday. Its an out of town wedding so should be loads of fun :)
Since I am super excited - I get to tell you guys what's happening and more importantly, what i am wearing :P
3rd - Engagement and Lunch (still in my city so not that big a deal.
4th - Mehndi and a dance party (we're driving out of town in the morning)
5th - Sangeet (Dance party with all of us performing) and I get to wear a Lehnga.
6th - Baraat (google images!) and i am wearing a saree for the first time in 7 year!
7th - the actual marriage ceremony at 7 AM. The we get to come back home after lunch. whew!
It sounds amazing, Arushi and I hope you (and your friend!) have a great time! I love how everyone does weddings differently around the globe.
Have fun Arushi! I feel like the closest friends are more tired at a wedding than the bride herself :P (and you haven't worn a sare in 7 years!?!? I live in the states and I think I wear it at least once a year... I have friends that go to parties every weekend so they wear a sari EVERY. SINGLE. SATURDAY. See why I don't go to them every weekend? lol)
We must be right lazy gits in the UK, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having a wedding at 7am before. I guess it must be a local custom.
@Lannister - Yep, they're really different all over the world. 7 am is NOT a local custom or i would have gone crazy by now. Usually there is the baraat arrival in the evening, some ceremonies and then the actual wedding ceremony sometime in the evening or late at night. So usually by 6 or 7 am the next morning the close family gets to go back home. But my friend is a Sikh - and so the wedding 'ceremony' takes place in a gurudwara and so it has to be early in the day.
@Zenat - Yep, we definitely are, but she is doing a good impersonation of Bridezilla (a teeny bit) so don't think we are freaking out more than her.
I wore a saree for my high school grad - but not after that. I wore lehengas for close family marriages, or salwar suits. Saree is more grown up i guess - plus its such a pain to handle (especially since i have no practice.)
@Anna - Thank you :) I am planning to and I know will be dying by the time we return.
Saree's are a pain to handle! I wish I didn't have to wear them often. Bangali's tend to veiw Lehanga's as bridal attire or for young kids. Once you are married you are old and you are expected to wear sari's all the time. Which is annoying for events like weddings or shows or whatever... I'd rather wear a selwar... or a regular dress.
According to Huffington Post, the name Marlowe is one of 2013's hottest baby names.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04...
I'm certain this is entirely down to the popularity of KC and this group, and nothing to do with Sienna Miller. :P
I'm not quite certain what to make of girls called Marlowe. Hmmm ....
Well it is your name Lady Marlowe!I'm not sure what to make of people calling their baby boys after Christian Grey. And Mingus? Really? In English schools? They hate their kids that much?
This is probably going to sound nuts, but whenever I read Heathcliff's (physical) description, I always think of Slash out of Guns n Roses. Fact!
well, heathcliff is been around long enough where it could have many meanings... family name, high school memories, etc. Christian grey though... lol
So not right. Your child should never be associated with erotica. It's weird. And slightly incestuous.
OH MY GOD! I just got back from seeing Macklemore and he was fucking awesome! For those of you not from the US, Macklemore is an Irish rapper born in Seattle. You might have heard of the song "Thrift Shop."The concert was insane. I was completely trampled by drunk/high people too many times to count. At one point both my shoes got ripped off, one broke, and I had to walk home through D.C. barefoot. Good times.

Funny! Good job the parents are one step ahead so far!
Zeenat wrote: "fun! where did he perform?"On 1 of our campus quads (which he jokingly referred to as "the grassy knoll"). It's great because it was a school sponsored event, which meant all we had to do was show student ID to get in. Didn't stop people from showing up ridiculously drunk and/or high, but oh well. That's college for you.
When I hear heathcliff I think about the cartoon before anything else ... I had a heathcliff piggy bank for forever. wtf.I have only been to like 2 concerts in my life ... one was a thing with a band I think was punk or ska, I forget, at an amusement park, was free, and was pretty fun. (Especially watching my cousin dance with himself, he was always full steam ahead with stuff.)
The other was shania twain and that so does not count because:
1. It was a million years ago
2. seriously wtf things you do to make your bf happy at the time
I much rathered the weekly outings we had at the rifle range or going fishing. WA state is good for that. :X
As for names ... they are always screwy. I have heard of Harlow for girls and boys names. Hilary, Kelsey, lindsey, and Ashley are just some of the others.
I can see naming a kid after a star or someone who you could actually look up to, that kid is going to have some mental problems when he grows up....
I am a light weight when it comes to caffeine apparently.
