Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments We've been talking a lot about Briar and Zeke, but there's got to be some feelings about the other folk who populate Boneshaker.

Serve it up.

Jeremiah has to be my favorite supporting character in the book. He's got the gadgets, he's got the skills and he's got a code he lives by. He's like a steampunk superhero :P

And of course, the rest of the cast is excellent as well.

Stacie (stacieh) I love Lucy. Not only does she have the coolness factor with her mechanical arm, she is a strong, warm decent person who just happens to have the greatest vulnerability to the villain. Of all of the supporting characters she has the most to lose by standing up to Minnericht, regardless whether they win or lose, and she does it anyway.

stormhawk | 418 comments I don't know if Minnericht qualifies as supporting cast or should be regarded as a major character ...

In any event, I felt that there was a lot unsaid about him that might have benefitted the story. How was he able to capitalize on Blue's plans and inventions? It wasn't clear that he was an inventor or scientist in his own right. A merely clever man, for example, wouldn't have been able to create Lucy's arm. Ultimately I tried to envision him as a steampunk Bill Gates, who doesn't do a whole lot of the work on his own but surrounds himself with people (like Yaozu and his thoughts of recruiting Huey). I also would have expected more in the way of personal magnetism ... the spider in the center of his web of wires enticing flies into his lair, and so on. I didn't read him as having that kind of charismatic charm.

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments stormhawk, I'm completely on board with that assessment. I wanted the evil genius to be so much more than a petty jerk in the end. after the novel-long build up, to be revealed as just so much smoke & mirrors was kind of a letdown. Lucy's arm was the highlight of that for me - if he's just tweaking someone else's work, where did that invention come from??

my fave supporting characters were definitely the motley crew of airship captains. clearly the guys each have some interesting back stories, and I'm looking forward to checking them out in th sequels.

stormhawk | 418 comments Since there's not a separate thread (yet) for the Rotters ... since when can Zombies operate an elevator that reasonably bright humans can't figure out on their own?

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments I was likewise thoroughly confused on that point and had to reread that page a couple times. in the end, I decided what happened (there was a pounding, then loud crash) was that the horde of zombies has bashed through the ceiling of the lift and were then tumbling down and out of it.
