Great stories.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
I'm from Canada though I had the chance to tour a bit of Australia a few years ago.
I real all sorts of fiction -- sci-fi/fantasy/horror and more mainstream literature. My preference is stories with strong, realistic characters -- no matter the genre.
Nowadays I mostly read for 'work purposes' though -- I'm a writer and I try and keep up with the field, seeing what readers are recommending and such.

Sorry folks, was responding to a post on the first page - my mind slipped about not being automagically pushed to the last post of the thread.
Paul.

Booku launched on Tuesday with more than 134,000 ebooks, including some Australian content from publishers such as Allen & Unwin, Black Dog Books, Exisle Publishing, HarperCollins, New Holland and Pan Macmillan.
Wehner said that Booku ebooks can be purchased and downloaded from the Booku website and can be read on computers and dedicated ereaders including Sony and Kobo devices. Customers with Android phones and tablets and Apple devices can access their Booku purchases through the OverDrive Media Console app. Booku ebooks are not compatible with Kindles.
Wehner said in a statement this week that he hopes to create an Australian identity for the website." Read more.
I really like the Boomerang Bookstore. It has several great blogs and strongly promotes Aussie books. If you're keen on buying from Aussie companies you could check this out. I hope their ebook store does well.:)

They even have a page on the various readers you can buy. Check em out!

Borrower & lender be
"One of the drawbacks of e-books was the inability to lend them to a friend. Now you can.
REMEMBER scrounging around in the bottom of your bag for your library card, watching the librarian read out your $8 worth of overdue fines and stare at you as you teetered towards the exit, trying to balance half a dozen books without crashing through the electronic doors. Or was that just me?
...The digital book revolution has been the ultimate game-changer, with Amazon selling an estimated 4 million Kindle e-readers in little more than three years to claim half the market. It seems the pioneer e-tailer is happy with the uptake because it has generously released a lending and borrowing feature that allows Kindle users to share their books with readers all over the world. Those who don't own a Kindle can also join the e-book swap with free reading applications available for Mac, PC and Android." Read more.
The article goes on to discuss the new Amazon website created for lending/borrowing books: booklending(dot)com
It further says, "International users may borrow an e-book, but only if it's a title that's available to purchase in their region, which for Australians is close to 565,000 titles, or 69 per cent of Amazon's catalogue."
The article takes a swipe at publishers: "What's holding back e-book lending are book publishers. Clearly rattled by the digital paradigm shift, most aren't giving permission for their catalogue to be loaned digitally. In analysing the 115,000 titles searched for on Booklending.com across the prevailing genres of crime fiction, literary fiction, paranormal romance and sci-fi, only half are lendable."
The article states: "Local e-book expert Jason Davis, who runs e-book news site Bookbee.net, which has just started its own e-book exchange, says book industry sources are predicting e-reader penetration in Australia to jump from 4 per cent to 10 per cent within the next two years." (I went to the bookbee site and registered and tried to open the ebook exchange feature but just kept getting cycled back to the login page. I would be interested to hear from anyone who was successful with this 'Aussie ebook exchange service'.)

I avoided it for a long time because I thought it was a silly sounding name for a company but I love that the books are DRM free and can be read by a variety of apps/devices.
