I've just sent an email to the three Ministers listed in the email below pleading with them to ban live exports.
If you want to do the same please feel free to either write your own email, or if you cant be bothered just copy and paste mine, a copy of which I've included in this email.
MY EMAIL (remember to change my name to yours!):
"I am writing to plead with you to do all you can to stop the export of live animals overseas.
I know this is under review at present, and I have been an active campaigner against live export for some years now.
I believe that the animals' welfare can best be served by ceasing this barbaric practice. The conditions the animals are
exposed to are nothing short of horrific.
Please impose a total ban.
If we expand our slaughterhouse operations in Australia we can continue to export the meat overseas thus supporting
our farmers and increasing jobs in the meat / slaughterhouse industry. We are able to follow Halal methods of killing thus
abiding by the cultural and religious practices required by other countries.
The solution seems to obvious - protect the animals and keep jobs here in Australia.
When it comes time to vote please remember the words of Ghandi ""A nation's greatness is measured by how
it treats its weakest members."
Yours,
Maggie Swift"

Subject: We have never been so close to a ban on live trade. Help us get it over the line.
Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2011 01:38:18 -0500
From: humanesocietyinternational@hsi.org.au
Dear Maggie,
Today, the Live Animal Export Restriction and Prohibition Bill 2011 and the Live Animal Export (Slaughter) Prohibition Bill 2011, submitted by Independent MP Andrew Wilkie, Senator Nick Xenophon and by the Australian Greens, are due to be heard by the Australian Parliament and the permanent ban of live farm animal exports outside of the country will be considered.
This would end the cruel trade of the past 30 years that has transported millions of animals -- who suffer greatly during the long treks -- to be killed in countries without adequate animal welfare standards for handling and slaughter.
HSI has asked all members of Parliament to support the passage of this important legislation, but we need your help. Tell the Australian Parliament to do the right and humane thing, and ban the export of live farm animals.
While the cruelty associated with this practice is well known and documented, the current and very public pressure to end it was prompted by the airing of an exposé on the cruelty inflicted on cattle exported from Australia to slaughterhouses in Indonesia. Evidence showed horrific treatment of the animals, and every slaughter facility breached international animal welfare guidelines.
The government has temporarily suspended live trade to Indonesia, but Minister Ludwig has announced he would like to resume the trade within the next three weeks. We cannot allow this to happen. A permanent ban on all live farm animal exports from Australia is the only way to address this serious welfare issue.
Tell the Australian Parliament to ban the cruelty for good.
Ask the Government to show their support to call for a conscience vote when Bills to end live farm animal exports are introduced into Parliament today.
We can stop the unnecessary long distance transport of live animals for slaughter. Already, modern exports of fresh, chilled, and frozen meat are far greater than the live trade and increasing every year. Governments can put legislation in place to make sure that animals are slaughtered humanely and in accordance with cultural and religious requirements, as close to the point of production as possible. The chilled meat can then be transported and delivered in fresh condition.
If you would like to take action on this issue please write to the following Ministers and raise the following points.
Congratulate the Australian Government on implementing the immediate suspension on exports to Indonesia so as to ensure no additional animals leave Australia for the time being.
Ask that the Government considers the terrible suffering of the animals involved in the live trade industry, and acts to outlaw live trade in light of the fact that modern refrigeration methods are available.
Ask the Government to permanently ban the live trade to Indonesia and confirm an end date for all live animal exports.
Highlight that slaughtering practices according to Islamic law, which were previously used as an excuse for the live export industry, have been accommodated by Australian abattoirs, and therefore removes the necessity to export live animals.
Furthermore, processing the meat in Australia and exporting it frozen will not only benefit the livestock, but also increase the number of industry jobs at home.

Today was my last exam, and I know I've only been studying for a fortnight, but it seems like FOREVER. It was such a relief to get home and just fall on my bed instead of start reading text book or doing maths equations :D
I was so happy five minutes ago-still am-when I was able to pack up all the mess/text books scattered on my floor. You couldn't even walk in my room due to all the papers.
Anyway, now I get to take the rest of the term easy :)

Yep, Tracey, it's cold in Queensland. We once had to ring a Melbourne firm for new parts for our hot water system, and told the chap on the phone the water pipes had burst during a frost. He said disbelievingly, "Frost in Queensland?" I told him this was the Darling Downs, not Cairns!
My daughter told me even the Gold Coast was down to 4 one morning last week. Thank heaven we have reverse-cycle air-con, though not game to use it until it's really cold. The next electric light bill will be a whopper. Better than the LPG though, we had to retire the gas heater a few years ago, gas was just getting too expensive. Still is.
Nice to hear from you and please, do take good care of yourself.
