Oh no, you're not a closet hoarder like me, I hope Marianne! I think I do need a professional declutter come to think of it. My DH wants to keep all his stuff but wants me to get rid of all my stuff. What to do! Decisions are no longer my strong point. "

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 92 comments Oh my! I have to see that movie "Suffragette". Was it a book? I also would like some suggestions for reading on the topic.

A psychic once told me I was a leader in the original suffragette movement in Britain in a past life. Can't believe it though but the suggestion peeked my interest in the subject. I looked up the name she gave me and couldn't find a reference.

message 25063: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Cobcroft | 58 comments Sorry to change the topic, but I just had to mention that a neighbor asked me to sign a petition yesterday, and I was quick to respond because I think this issue is very important. I was pleased to note that people from all over the world are signing, but sad to see that Australians, as a whole, seem dreadfully apathetic. Maybe it's a case of being so blessed that we take it all for granted?

We desperately need support to save the remaining koala population in Australia, and sadly Tweed Shire Council isn't making a reasonable effort to offer protection. We live next to an environmental protection zone (koala sanctuary) that, if TSC and a rich developer (who seems to always profit from council decisions) have their way, will soon be a concrete jungle. Sadly, it's one of the few remaining places where koalas can exist safely, and it's being destroyed - along with tourism opportunity and the lifestyles of people who love nature and want to live in harmony with it.

Would you consider helping to save our iconic native fauna by telling a councillor who was elected on an environmental protection platform that supporting commercial interests over protection of our iconic wildlife isn't good enough?

Go to http://www.thepetitionsite.com/en-gb/... to sign.

Thanks (and sincere apologies to anyone who doesn't agree with the cause or considers it inappropriate to raise here)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Here is a little about the previously mentioned women's petition...

The power of the petition

Laura Daniele, Women's Suffrage Petition, ('Monster Petition') 1891
Laura Daniele, Women's Suffrage Petition, ('Monster Petition') 1891. Courtesy of the Parliament of Victoria.

An example of the extraordinary efforts made by Australian women to win the vote is the efforts made to gather over 40,000 signatures in support of women's suffrage on two important petitions. Covering much of the nation, women suffrage campaigners travelled thousands of miles knocking on doors and eventually getting around 1% of the entire population of Australia to sign.

The first petition sought that 'Women should Vote on Equal terms with Men', and was gathered during 1891 when a few dedicated women including Marie Kirk, Vida Goldstein and Annette Bear-Crawford, literally went from door to door, eventually gathering almost 30,000 signatures from women all over Victoria and from all walks of life. It was presented to Parliament in September 1891.

Now one of Victoria's archival treasures, the document is known as the 'Monster Petition' because of its size. At 260 metres long it takes three people three hours to unroll it from one spool to another. Although this petition did not have an immediate effect on the voting rights of women in Victoria, it was an early and important stepping stone towards women's participation in politics, not just in Victoria but for all of Australia.

The petition can be viewed here and it's database searched by name: http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/abou...

*More info can be found by googling the names of Marie Kirk, Vida Goldstein and Annette Bear-Crawford.

gathering feather organiceden | 86 comments Have you ever read a book that had food in it? The author made it sound so delicious you just wished you could eat it or at least have the recipe so you could cook it yourself?
I dream about that all the time- I thought 'I wish there was a cookbook for these novel collections!'
Well I just discovered a website that does just that! It's call The Little Library Cafe
Kate has taken the dishes from various books - even some favorite children's stories - and developed recipes for them. Her blog features blurbs from the stories and a commentary including her rendition of the dish. There's a recipe and lots of photos too! Take a look at this, I'm sure the foodies amongst you will thoroughly enjoy it!

message 25088: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9985 comments Well, I spent 11 days cleaning and tidying my house, a bit each day. I threw out so much paper in the way of old pharmacy journals etc that it is sitting waiting to go in the recycling bin: too heavy to all go in in one go.

Today, if someone came to the door, I could actually let them in without feeling awful about how it looks. So Brenda, Veronica, feel free to come and get your books, I will show you my TBR room and my library. Of course, by the time you factor in your petrol costs, the books will not be a bargain any more, LOL.

I worked out we haven't had a paid cleaner for over a year!! Our last few were either unreliable or couldn't follow instructions.

One good thing: while I was tidying up I found a piece of paper with the contact details of a woman who used to clean our house with our best ever cleaner before she (had the nerve to!!) retire. She has her own cleaning business and is coming to do a quote this week. I have better things to do with my time off (like read!!).

It's a good feeling when you get it finished. My daughter is cleaning out her room and she told me to go away. I kept saying " you can't throw that out, your grandmother gave you that". I'm what is called a sentimental hoarder. Can I blame my mother? She never kept anything :)

Laureen (laureenandersonswfcomau) | 92 comments You guys blow me away with all that activity! All I dream about is lying around sleeping, reading; then reading, sleeping. Why can't I do that? Home pressures, a mother in a nursing home, family to catch up with & 5 grand children (the best bit), plus running a business, mother's financials and decisions about her health; grocery shopping; washing and the list goes on. I am sure you have all been there. But I am 66 now and definitely ready for retirement but not financially ready! Whinge, whine - yes I love a good wine. Lol.

Thanks, Brenda, I'm so looking forward to it!

I've also just finished the first draft of a new book, which is always nice. It's completely different to the Frontier ones, so it's been a nice change. I've now put it away to 'percolate' for a couple of weeks, and might do a bit of work on it while on holiday.
