I think I will put it on the list, but I have a large list at the moment ... may need to do some culling. I will check to see if the library has it which will boost its likelihood of reading it in the near future.

Dee-Ann | 644 comments Just checked, they do. Will have to go in and reserve it (and return some overdue books at the same time).

I received The Plot Against America from my son for my birthday on the weekend. I haven't read any of Philip Roth's books either, but my son loved it, so thought I'd enjoy it too!

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Not sure I should post this here, but I'm having problems with colourful adds. They've suddenly started flashing across my Goodreads webpages and I can't read what I'm doing. I've no idea why they suddenly appeared. I don't know how to get rid of them. Can anyone suggest anything? (i don't mean the adds in the right hand side bar. These are scattered across the page and flashing. The last one was for The NRMA.

message 2411: by Neko (new)

Neko What type of ads? It sorta sounds like you've been to a website that's installed ads to your PC. That's if it's happening when you go all sorts of websites and not just GR.

So in otherwords it sounds like spyware.

Firstly, I'd do a virus scan and see if something crops up.

Secondly, go and download a spyware program that gets rid of them (Malwarebytes, Spybot- Search & Destroy). Allow either of them to do the 'deep scan' and it'll go through your PC looking for nasties.

message 2412: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Thanks, Laura. I did a scan with Super Antispyware, but it's still happening. I'll download Spybot and see itf that helps. I did click onto something here that was called Lumocity and it happened after that. I accidently clicked onto that site and the next thing I was getting emails. I thought it was just a survey. I asked them to delete me from their website and they said it will take 48 hours, but I don't know if it was that site that caused the problem.

Is there anyway I can stop websites installing ads to my PC? It's so annoying.

Thanks for the help, Laura. I'll go and download Spybot. I already use Avast antivirus, so I might do a full scan too.

message 2413: by Neko (last edited May 18, 2011 09:00PM) (new)

Neko Hmm..Maybe the Lumocity had something on their site...While their site might be legit..The ads on the site can be shonky. Some webmasters do nothing about shonky ads and others will removed them because they didn't know that they were 'bad' until someone complains.

The only way you can really stop websites installing nasties to you pc is by having a virus scanner that detects problem website (AVG does something like this). Or you set up your web browser so that ANY installations that happen it's GOT to ask you beforehand.

Also it'll depend on your browser..There are differences in IE and FF. I don't use IE (Internet Explorer) so I'm not fully up to speed on it anymore. I use FireFox.

But sadly we need to have two programs on our pcs these days....VIRUS protector and SPYWARE protector. I've got several spyware programs simply because each program doesn't spot all the problems.

It's a royal pain in the arse :s

message 2414: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 86 comments Thanks, Michael. I checked the task manager and nothing showed up there. Could it have been that Lumocity website. The first add that appeared was theirs. I thought I was just doing a survey and found that I'd subscribed to some mind games. I've unsubscribed now, so hopefully the adds will stop. But it might not have been them. It only seems to happen on the Goodreads site so far.

That must have been so frustrating to be kicked off the net, Michael. I hate computer problems. I've already had one computer crash on me last year, but that was because I left a post-it-note on a disk- (didn't have a proper pen handy, stupid me.) and I forgot to open the tower to retrieve it. Weeks later, the computer crashed and I was told that was the reason. I ended up losing all my photos, but not my writing, thank goodness I keep that on a hard drive.

I'm doing a full scan on my PC with Avast and Super spyware.

Thank you for the help, Michael.

Matthew Lang (matthewlang) | 143 comments Hi Pat,

Try Lavasoft Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_a...) in addition to SpyBot and make sure you've got a functioning up to date antivirus as well. I find that between adaware, spybot and a good antivirus, you're usually fine.

If you keep finding new malware gets downloaded, I'd suggest making sure adaware, spybot ad your antivirus are up to date, disconnecting from the internet (so turning off the network) which will stop a trojan downloading anything and then run them all one by one.

Thanks Matthew,

I used to have adaware on my crashed computer, but when I downloaded it on my new laptop, it said it was incompatible with my Avast, but I'll try downloading it again.

I did close off everything at lunch time and did a full scan with spybot and Avast and I think that has fixed it, but before I did that I went into Internet explorer security options and turned up the dial to Medium High instead of Medium, which it was on. I think that might have helped as the adds seemed to disappear straight after that, but it could have also been because I did a quick scan with spy bot after Laura made her suggestion.

Thanks everyone. You're all so helpful. I hope I can help with something one day.

Hi Brenda, it is. Everyone is so helpful

I was happy there for a moment but when I went to my home page just now, those adds are back again. Darn it, and I thought they had gone. I better do another scan.

message 2421: by Neko (new)

Neko Sometimes virus prgrams and spybot programs disagree with eachother. And if that is the case sometimes you need to disable (properly close) the virus software while the spyware program is running.

It can go both ways.

Did the Spybot tell you of any problems? Usually it will. Unless your virus scanner caught something before it did.

Laura, no it just picked up the usual stuff. It seems to happen when I run my curser over my book cover for Molly Gumnut on my home page, and when I move the curser to the right, the page completely changes and goes to a Telstra page that is connected to Facebook. It doesn't make sense.

message 2423: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments Patricia,
May I suggest that you clean out your internet files. The adds will have been attached to something that you downloaded and in many cases cleaning your temp internet files will kill the add link.
Try this (it's free)IObit\Advanced SystemCare 4\ASC.exe if the link fails just search for Iobit Advanced System 4.
CCleaner64.exe is another I use, which will over write your unused HD (the blank area not your used area) to make sure everything is 'dead' after delition - you can set it to over write more than once. I let it run and still use the machine. Again it is free.
If you use WE 9 you can delete your temp files with a command under 'Tools' - I use this command, but still use the other 'cleaners' as well.
I don't think Avast (I use Avast on my wife's machine) will delete you temp files and I doubt that it will find the rogue adds as they are not trying to alter your machine in anyway, nor are they 'spying' on you.

Hope the above helps
cheers
Geoff

message 2424: by Neko (new)

Neko Yeah, Geoff has a point about cleaning out your internet files..Cleaning up the cookies and temp files for your internet browser can work wonders.

But you've just got to remember when doing this your PC won't repsond to sites as fast as it has to resave everything again. There is also a chance that your passwords/logins for sites will also be scrubbed. So it's very important to know them all before doing something like this. Otherwise you need to 'forget password' fun stuff.

I'd go back to Hawaii...was a very nice place. But I'd never eat Mc Donalds there again. It was interesting on one of the islands we were on (we went to two) and we hit one part of a town and it felt like Australia..Morso Queensland in the bush..It was very odd feeling..lol

Haven't really seen much of Australia except traveled up the East coast of Australia..starting from Tassie and ending up in QLD. But yes, Australia has sooo much to offer and see :D

When we went to Hawaii we went on my Mum's birthday and then when we arrived in Hawaii it was her birthday all over again..ahaha. When we our passports got signed the man goes 'Happy birthday again!' lol
