I stopped eating any carbs for about 12 months and found the weight dropped off...now I've started again:( But tell me, what do you eat at lunch instead of a sandwich?

Those meals are the best! I love vegetarian lasagna...it's really hard to get when you're out though...

If I know I cater - wouldn't be doing my job as host if I didn't aim to make my visitors comfortable and happy.

I remember years ago we invited some people over and I asked each couple if they have any food preferences and was told no by all of them. I did a roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings and one of the women told me she was vegetarian after I served up and put the plate in front of her. I was so upset - I took her plate away and did a clean plate with just vegetables on it - with a dob of butter and a sprinkle of herbs.

I couldn't even give her the gravy as I had made it out of the pan juices. She just picked at the food and said it was a bit boring, I could have done a cheese sauce. I told her that I would have, had she had told me when I asked her prior to the dinner if she had any dietary requirements.

They were never invited again. Thankfully my ruffled feathers were soothed when the other guests all praised the meal.

I had done a clear vegetable soup for entrée and then fresh fruit salad and cream for dessert - so my vegetarian guest wasn't starved :)

That was fairly rude of her Sally! She shouldn't have said anything if she hadn't told you first!!! My feathers would have been ruffled too!

I was very young and newly married too, had just moved to Darwin and knew no-one - was my first dinner party - hubby was still a probationary constable and I had invited 3 couples from his squad to get to know them better - we are actually still very close friends with the other two couple :)

I don't blame you for being a bit miffed. I always ask people beforehand as you did if they have any allergies or things they don't or can't eat. Not much more you could have done given those circumstances than what you did.

My mum once cooked poached eggs on toast for someone after they announced they were vegetarian while she was already to serve up roast beef and all the trimmings. I don't think they ever came for a meal again:)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments You know what??? Some people are just plain rude and selfish! There seems to be a real growing sense of entitlement amongst people these days with no respect for the value of anything...and I'm not just talking about material things...these people wouldn't recognise a meaningful gesture if it hit them in the heart!
If I had special dietary needs which were personal lifestyle choices I would never expect someone to go to the trouble of cooking seperate dishes for me..if they were insistent and kind enough to do so without going to great lengths or great expense, then I would be very grateful and gracious in my acceptance.
If it were because of special dietary requirements due to health related issues, then I feel sure the hosts would understand and do their best to accommodate or let you bring something along.

Here is what I would do either way, I would cook a special dish of something myself to take along and share...ie; enough to go around.
Just as a matter of courtesy, I always take something along anyway, so why not take a dish that you know you can eat and not put your already generous hosts in such an uncomfortable position...Oh and please, give them a box of Favourites for inviting you!!!

Off my soapbox now ;D

You tell 'em love!!!

I really don't mind catering for friends - It is a lot of fun consulting Chef Goggle - but this person was just plain rude about it - I was doing my best.

I always have a can of baked beans in my cupboard - nowadays I am not so green and anxious to please so I would of opened it up and warmed them up for her!!! LOL

I like Phrynne's mums idea though - wish I had thought of that :)

I'm in the same boat with the job thing too :/ But I do agree reading is a great distraction!!

I hope they don't leave you hanging with your job for too long...Hopefully 2016 to be better for us both :)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) @Brenda I eat three gorgeous Pink Lady apples for lunch. Same thing every day, I don't have a problem with variety. It's easy, quick and the best sort of yummy. They're available here year round.

It is the lowest form of manners to turn your nose up a food which a host has cooked for you. I would never do that.

message 24170: by B the BookAddict (last edited Dec 01, 2015 10:05AM) (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Entitlement - so many of the younger generation have an overdose of entitlement, in my opinion. Actually, my big bugbear is their lack of respect, for their parents, elders, jobs, other people - most things, really. And like Brenda, don't even get me started on the mobile phone problem!

message 24171: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) That's true. Maybe I'm getting old and grumpy:) But you know, some kids I just want to slap and say 'wake up'.

Enjoy it Rita,I missed all the primary school end of year stuff when my boys moved on to high school. Although it is crazy having to pack all the Christmas and end of school year stuff into a couple of weeks. Must be more relaxed in countries where the school year ends in June.
And yes, Mum's taxi will get very busy and often have to be in two places at once! I recommend time travel as the only option :)

Sally906 | 89 comments Tia wrote: "I completely agree with you Julie, the entitlement these days is one of my pet hates (the other is people walking while staring at their phones). I can't stand it!"

Another hate of mine :)

If my phone rings I move to the side - check it - if immediate family I will answer it but stand still out of the way until call finished -anyone else I let it go to message bank. I certainly don't text and walk - Ive been know to not move when I see someone heading my way head down texting and then I stop still. They usually see me at the last minute and swerve.

Actually come to think of it - I can be a pretty nasty person when I'm in the mood :)

She though it was very funny!!! Her mother not so much. Tree came down has been hosed down and reassembled with new none 'christened' decorations!! Thank goodness it was a plastic tree.
