Lol Bette, your offer sounds very tempting and I feel confident I could bluff my way through getting you at least into 2014!! (I still haven't installed windows 10!)
My tech prowess is borne of necessity! And necessity being the mother of invention, I have found that if you google anything, you will find out everything on it! Then just a matter of trawling through it all until you find what works for you. I figure if I can read it, I can learn it, so I blunder in and always learn something along the way!
Also, never underestimate the virtues of youtube! A great learning device inmho :)
Having said all that, I am sure there would be some device out there that could connect to your pc to allow you to scan. My advice though, would be to get yourself a tablet ie; ipad or similar as it is soooo portable...and fun! Do you have a mobile smart phone? You can put the Goodreads app on that ;)
Ps..I cook, but I don't clean! ;) edit, I do clean, but I don't enjoy it! Waste of good reading time iyam.

No, you scan the barcode Laura...read my reply to Marianne for details :)

Yes! Lots of other extras too, too many to mention here.

:D I love it Rita! You can try it out for free. You must get the program (database) first on your pc and then put the app on your other appliances, then they all sync with each other at your command.
Wow Jools, you are very smart! My eyes started to glaze over before I'd read half of your explanation! lol I have a smart phone but don't think the app is available. My son has it and I've been fascinated by the fact that he can scan his books straight onto his GR shelves:)

Yes you can get the goodreads app free for your phone Brenda, just find it in your app store.
Mine is a Samsung phone and I have Goodreads and Clz on there...you just have to get the android version.
I downloaded it through the site when it first came out, (they sent an email) maybe you can still do that somewhere?

Hahaha lol ;)
I'm really not that clever, I'm just persistent when I want something and if there is an easy way to do a thing then rest assured I will find it! ;))

Just open it and muck around, you can't do anything that can't be undone.. pretty basic ;) try out the scan on a book you have...just aim at the barcode.

It works through the camera on your phone or ipad or whatever device you are using. When you open the app...assuming it is all downloaded and working...at the top you should have 3 options: Updates, My Books, Scan.
Click on scan and you get more options, scan a book, scan many books etc. click on scan a book and it will open your camera with a little frame with a red line for you to point around the barcode on your book. Hold it over the barcode and move it in or out until it focusses you will hear a loud beep when it has done. Then the book will come up :) pick a book you know is in the database to begin with just to practice on.
After that you have the options to save it to whatever shelf/s you wish.

No, all it says is "Join Goodreads - sign up now" etc the same as when you turn goodreads on... don't worry, I'm fine as is!!!
Thanks for your help anyway:)
Thanks for your help anyway:)

Lol! Did you try it now Laura? It is very handy when you are at a bookshop, just scan and add to your wish list or tbr or just bought ;)

Oh, see I think nowadays when you join Goodreads you get the app at the same time...maybe you could just sign in Brenda? It might recognise your account once you enter, it has to be somewhere on Goodreads.
Thanks Jools:) I've been busy with making photo calendars for next year today - 5 1/2 hours plus! I've made and ordered the two, and have to do my photo books yet! It's always a big job but wonderful to have:)

What sort of phone do you have Phrynne? Mine is a Windows HTC and doesn't seem to want to do a lot of the things iPhones do!

Haha Yeah! Great Phrynne, glad to hear it works, I did walk myself through it as I posted to make sure but you never can tell with different phones :)
What else? hmmmm, let me think on it ;)

You might need to have a word with Santa Brenda ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ...is it a smart phone? I'm sure it is and it should work :/

Thanks for all that info, Jools, you should be titled the resident AR tech expert!
But for me, there's option c:
enter the books into the "perfectly adequate and completely customised to what Marianne wants" spreadsheet on my laptop, which I also transfer to my tablet & phone on a regular basis.
When I have a bunch by one author I decide to follow, I copy and paste their list from fantasticfiction.co.uk .
this has served me well for many years, and I keep tabs on who has which book, + various other things I want to note.
Only time I double up is when I forget to add a newly acquired book.

If it works for you Marianne then stay with it ;) if it ain't broke, don't fix it :)
Mine is an iPhone Julie. It was so much fun and obviously so useful that my husband tried to do it on his Samsung and couldn't make it work:(
Ahh well at least I know that might be why mine won't work then Phrynne...sorry the Samsung won't do it as well!
Brenda wrote: "Perhaps you should have a look at it for him then;)"
Oh no! That wouldn't work! I know when to bury my head in a good book and keep very quiet:)

Mine is a Samsung Phrynne and works great! ;) before this phone I had a HTC smartphone and it worked on that also. Did your DH get the android version? That is necessary for non apple devices.

I have the app on my iPad and only use it for scanning. It's so quick to add a pile of books and great for looking up reviews when you see a new book to purchase.

Oh and Windows phones....man i used to support Windows but after owning two Window phones n different brands i gave up...got so tired of them not having enough apps...Supposedly this is meant to change over time due to some sort of agreement but it certainly has been left in the dust.

Brenda, I have the HTC as well and find that it doesn't do lots of the goodies a smart phone does:(

I'm a cleanaholic neat freak so no problems there, detest cooking.

Bette, If ever you shout yourself an ipad or tablet of any kind (they really are the Best toys! ;) then you will have all you need to enjoy these sort of facilities...and they're portable! ;)

Option a. Your Goodreads App has a scan option for adding books to your shelves (sorry Bette it doesn't work with the laptop/pc) you need to have it [the App] on your tablet or phone to use it. Just point at the barcode on the book and it will make an audible beep when it registers seconds later, and voila, it lists your book to be shelved. You can shelve individually or scan many and shelve all together later. It uses the camera on your device to do this.
You need to get the free App from the App store.
Option b. is CLZ App. This is a book database program which I have mentioned here before. A lot like itunes...but for books! Where you store all of your book details, from cover, blurb, publishers, read or not, owned, loaned, reviews etc. everything you want to add and more ;) I add my books as I get them and have scanned all of my library into it....really easy!
You can easily (one button) sync between your pc and tablet/phone/ipod, updating your database regularly in moments...it uses a cloud. So you always have your database backed up!
This App isn't free but you can trial the complete program for free! It really is worth purchasing though as they are constantly upgrading it to make it easier and better. Cost is around $30Au...cheap for what it can do. This is a great program imho, fun too ;)
Both only recognise books which are already in their database but new books can be added manually. CLZ doesn't have as many as yet unpublished books as Goodreads but they can be manually added and they usually turn up once published, with the extra details automatically updated.
