★ Jess | 3071 comments I guess thats okay. Bust still...6:45 is way to early on a Saturday.
I dont even get up at 6:45 on school days!!

message 2302: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I usually set my alarm for 7:04 on the dot.
But sometimes, like today, I press 'snooze' and sleep until half past :O

Yes, those early morning starts are definitely hard, but I find it's a good day afterwards...when you finish early (from work) you seem to have a lot more day to yourself. I always hated the afternoon shift :(

@Brenda- Yes! That's what I used to love about early shifts as well..The rest of the day is just there waiting..Something to look forward too. But evening shifts I'd fine myself counting down the hours :s

Exactly!! Couldn't seem to do much before the shift, just 'waiting for the time you had to start'..

OMG..bed at 5am!! Laura!! Should have had a warm bath, a hot milo, and a toddy!! HA ;)

message 2310: by Neko (new)

Neko @Brenda- Yes exactly :/ Makes for an annoying day. I'm like it with meetings as well..Always have them in the morning. I dislike meetings right in the middle of the day.

Hahaha...Yea, I was sleepy...Brain was just too active. Dunno if i own what is needed for a toddy tho :o

That is sooo annoying when you are tired, and can't sleep! I usually read in the middle of the night, but sometimes even that doesn't work...:(

I reckon the internet has placed control in the hands of the purchasers, not just for books. It is now possible to 'shop around' using the entire world.

Perhaps those stores that have marked their products up way high might want to reconsider what they are doing, ultimately losing business. I'm sorry for the staff who may well lose their jobs - it doesn't seem fair for them at all.

You can buy all in ones for adults (called onesie's) from a place in Melbourne I think. Its called www.toddy.com.au. They don't have feet but the one my daughter has looks so comfortable.

Maggie Further to Geoff's comments re online sales (and an edited repost from bricks and mortar bookshops discussion) it seems to me that the world is changing rapidly. Items such as books, dvds, cds, computer games etc can all be purchased easily cheaply and quickly via the internet. So helpful for the consumers - it's as if we have wrested power for ourselves from the commercial world who saw nothing wrong with charging inflated prices.

When we discussed this at home my daughter mentioned that she thinks the future will be so radically different - many jobs will be lost and bookstores and the like will be gone forever. For example she mentioned that Maccas are now using computers to take your order thus doing away with counter staff.

It seems to me that any jobs which can be replace by machines or the internet will be lost to us whilst other jobs that actually involve hands on, face to face contact (eg police, nursing) are struggling to retain staff, pay poorly, have poor conditions.

It's all very well giving people more leisure time but if we dont have the finances to live it's not much good. And work provides pleasure, social contact, a reason to get up, a sense of self and achievement, a purpose.

Sorry to sound all doom and gloom but I do wonder what we are doing to ourselves. Having said that, I often buy books online because I object to paying two or three times as much for books unnecessarily. I also impulse buy at real bookshops with real people too! Nothing like browsing, picking up a book and flicking through it's pages.

Hi Maggie,
I have read that high school students may be applying for jobs, after university, that do not exist today. I have also read that university students, on a five year, course by the time they reach their fifth year some of their fisrt year information will be out of date.
As the industrial revolution of the 19th century changed the way of life, so our information age is changing our lives. We adapt or we perish - sounds cruel, but what choice do we have? Not all of us can do a tree change and live off the land - we have to eat.
In 1995 I was made redundant at the age of 55 & had to come up with something as nobody was interested in a 55 year old. The company I started I knew would have a limited life due to technology (e-mail) as I had used a primitive type of e-mail system since the late 80's. I sold out after 7 years - within two years the major part of the business I sold did not exists due to e-mail. But the network still exists and the new owner expanded a small part of that business and grew it to become profitable once more. He adapted.
cheers
Geoff
