All I have to say is... Yikearumba. Thank goodness there is currently no rain or wind. So much destruction around (thankfully our house and street came of relatively unscathed).
Boys' schools are still non operational. Trees down, flood damaged classrooms and no power.

I think it's heading your way Jools:( Take care. We had violent thunderstorms, wind and rain overnight which eased about 4am (I think) and it's "calm" (eye of the storm?) at the moment. I just emptied another 75ml from the rain gauge so that's 240 over two days! I won't be able to start our clean up until at least tomorrow and only if the weather clears. The garden is shredded! One of our hibiscus may not be able to be saved:(

I tried to leave to catch my bus at 6.30 but there was thunder and lightning and torrential rain like I'd never seen before and I just thought nup, not going out in that. I do have quite a bit of work I can do at home so have been keeping busy!

Hibiscus are tough Brenda so you never know it might recover after a good prune :)

Sounds like a really sensible decision Carolyn! Have a lovely day (slot in some reading if you can!) We still have many, many businesses, all schools, the Uni etc closed here; the massive cleanup will take weeks if not months to finish...

Hope everything gets back to normal soon. It will be months before all the damage to buildings and roofs are repaired. Good thing storms like this don't come along too often.

Looks like more tragedy from this storm. A car has washed away in Maitland and the two people inside are missing... http://www.theherald.com.au/story/302...

I emptied our rain gauge at 9am this morning and it was 120 exactly. We actually saw the sun for a while so I took advantage to walk to the shops to get some stuff. I saw a woman clearing a storm water drain on the way because the public pathway was flooded and we would be waiting more than a week if we waited for council to do it. We had a friend visit us who has no water, power or telephone network due to the storm. They were using ours for a short amount of time even just to recharge or have a cuppa. They only just started trains through Gosford again today. But it's started raining again.
And I have taken most of the sodden carpet from the garage - hope it's not too heavy for the bin truck in the morning! I've swept out the concrete floor of water (got quite a bit too) and am waiting for that to dry so I can move the stuff that's on more sodden carpet, to the dry concrete! Again, minor compared to others!
I feel for you Brenda. I'm not dealing with the sodden towels at the bottom of the doors until I'm sure the rain is done with. We had a bit of sunshine earlier, while it was pouring with rain at the same time.

But can't complain as the worst we have had is steady pounding rain but no other dramas.

Thanks Marianne:) I wrung the towels out, then put them back on the floor!
Yes we've had a little sunshine but no rain yet this morning. The sky looks threatening though - I hope you guys will be OK; it seems to be heading your way now:(

Yes I was thinking about Marianne when the abc radio announced severe warnings over, and headed for Southern areas...

Also can rise very quickly as well.

It was - it felt like an early summer. However, in Vancouver and Oregon that can easily change *sigh*

Thanks Sarah. It is a pic I took with my camera with macro lens attached.

Brenda- yep raining here again as well. Good bye to sunshine tomorrow I think.
Ah, memories of my childhood..I grew up at Moorebank on the Georges river and remember floodwaters reaching above our windows and being evacuated by Army Ducks! I don't remember it flooding there like that for many years, but tonight they are evacuating residents there...we would have been among them. This is the worst storms I remember for a very long time.
Just checked the rain gauge here again. Total of 134mm of rain so far in Muswellbrook.According to a number of people I've talked to today, Scone (25km) up the road had about half that, and Denman/Martindale (25km the other way) has had more and lots of wind.
We must have been just on the edge of the nasty bits. (The good side of the edge.)

To answer Deaths Coming question from Intro thread - the thing I miss most about Australia is Red Rooster. It's the one craving no where else in the world can satisfy.
Matthew wrote: "They do Brenda, but it's just not as good"
That's a shame! I imagine the first thing you do when you return to AU is go to Red Rooster:)

Yeah red rooster is so good, I always heard that fast food overseas is not as good

Yeah that's true actually. I find Australian Burger King/Hungry Jacks better and our Fish n Chip/Hamburger corner shops are on average better as well
Great, well at least I know, as I asked what did you hated most about Australia and is happy to leave?

I think we have been fortunate in that the rain, although heavy, pauses now and again and gives the water time to wash away. When it comes down non stop the street drains overflow and rush straight down our almost 45 degree downward sloping driveway then flood the garage and house when bad.
