Chat about whatever you like: the weather, good stuff, bad stuff, family or pets!
Thankfully nothing like those temps in Victoria and SA. Here expected 28. Good for swimming without being over hot. I wouldn't cope with temps in the 40s.
Stay safe those in bushfire areas - Adelaide Hills are in real trouble today - the light at the end of the tunnel is that a cool change is on the way - due to reach Melbourne later tonight and Adelaide a bit before that. The problem is the gale force winds that are coming ahead of it. Listeneing to the emergency services in SA he was saying the conditions are scarily bad. - always a worry when emergency services are scared.
Mount Gambier (where I grew up) in SA is in trouble too...Tantanoola was hit badly in the Ash Wednesday fires (I was caught in Mount Gambier with my 2yo son (now 32) unable to travel back to Naracoorte where we lived), and they're copping it again.. Golden Grove in northern Adelaide is where our son and d-i-l lived (fortunately not now)...it's terrifying!
Take care everyone...

Your weather is bad Michael:( Take care and try to stay cool!

Such bad news about the Vic and SA bush fires. Hope the firies can keep them away from homes. Stay safe everyone.

Thanks for that link Michael..it's horrendous that's for sure. I just hope they can get all the fires out very soon...

I hope you can view this - Tea Tree Gully Boarding Kennels and Cattery, North East of Adelaide, released this statement this evening after fire tore through their property.

How unutterably horrible! The poor animals... And their humans... and those poor people running the Kennels. My heart goes out to all of them.
I dropped my beloved pet in boarding today and this story just hits at my worst nightmares.
That is horrible. One of my cats had surgery yesterday and we have to drop them into the boarder in less than two weeks because we're moving interstate. My wife is already beside herself. I hope she doesn't hear about this story.
Such a devastating loss for the Tea Tree Gully Boarding kennels. As much as I feel for the owners losing their home and their livelihood, I cannot help but shudder at the fear those cats and dogs must have gone through; being in cages and unable to escape. I can only hope they smothered rather than the other horrible fate. The Adelaide Hills has gone through so many fires in the last few years, I hope the fire can be contained and there is not too much loss of property. Adelaide Hill-ians, I feel for you.
Michael wrote: "The owners of the Kennels also lost there home. What terrible blows for them having to inform people about the loss of there animals and coming to terms with there own losses."
Yes they lost everything - their home, their livelihood and the animals...terrible:(

I can barely imagine how scary and devastating this would be for everyone, from the firies and emergency services to the people in the areas affected by the fires.Hope any Aussie GR'ers in the area are safe...
Here's a blog post from Janis Hill. She's another Hague Publishing author, who lives in the Adelaide Hills. http://janishill-author.com/2015/01/0...
Thanks for sharing that Leonie..good to know she and her family is safe. Glad she found out her grandfather is safe too, and hope his dog is found..
I think it's been a dreadfully worrying time for so many people. When I was chatting to Janis on Twitter this morning, she still didn't know how long it might be until they'd be allowed to go and help. And then there was the issue of thunderstorms setting more fires.
Cattery and Kennel north of the city got hit, 40 dogs and all the cats lost. That got to me more than any of the other stuff to be honest :/
Yesterday I opened the parcel of files from my parent's estate I received at Christmas. It contains letters and postcards from my grand-uncle who had traveled to San Francisco in 1902 to his mother, my great grandmother in Melbourne. He was there through the 1906 earthquake. He also went to the 1909 Seattle World Fair. Each correspondence starts "Dear Mother" and ends with "your loving son"; they were so very formal back then. Some of the postcards feature a photograph of him on the front of the postcard. I had no idea they did that way back then.I spent hours in the company of a long dead relative as he relates his life and travels over 100 years ago.
@ Bette, fascinating! What a valuable legacy.I have some letters Mum wrote home to Holland during our ship journey here and the first few months, have been translating them.

And on another note: Good Morning early birds :)
It's back to work for me today after twelve days off. Will be a bit of a shock to the system!

But hey, at least tomorrow is my day off. I get to sleep in and then go and cuddle doggies at Animal Welfare League, where I volunteer on Tuesday's.

How wonderful Bette! You would have been drawn deep into the early 1900s and loved it too :) So interesting!

I have to train myself not to end up with another one at home. My husband used to call our place The Home of Last Chances; I was always bringing home something which would otherwise be euthanised.

I'm imagining the doggies you walk looking up at you with their big sad eyes!
We used to have kitties, usually in pairs, but my husband's allergies have been so much better since our last one passed away, so no more fur babies for us.
He did buy me a plush panther, but somehow it's not the same...
Kudos to the 200~ firies from NSW and Victoria who are over here camping in tents on an oval to assist with the Sampson Flat fire.

It's great isn't it Liam, the way the states help each other out in times of crisis...when we had our bad fires here Oct 2013, we had SA and Vic firies helping out too...

Hi all, was just wondering where everybody buys their books from? I'm looking for some great prices online.....Thanks
The Book Depository is where I buy most of mine from, Han. Free shipping worldwide and very good prices.

If you go to https://booko.com.au/ you can find the cheapest prices online there. Mostly Book Depository will be the cheapest as Liam says, but sometimes you'll get a real bargain:)

I think little Holly is missing her Mum! She barked on and off all night, then when the thunder started about 2.30am she was clawing at the door trying to get in. I wouldn't let her in because of our dog - not fair!! But now we are existing on about 2 hours sleep:("
Oh you meanie, Brenda, lol! Let that poor little doggie in (and yours) if there's thunder outside, Holly's obviously scared of thunder:D
