Kathryn | 3569 comments It's been 2015 for me for an hour now, and while I felt a little weary a bit earlier in the night, I don't feel very sleepy now that I'm actually in bed!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9994 comments Happy New Year, Bette, any other EB's and everyone else!!
I was all set to put in my 2015 Reading Challenge but then realised that it's still 2014 in the GoodReads world....
so that probably has to wait until this arvo

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Thanks, Marianne, best New Year wishes to you and all EB's, Aussie Readers and GR members:)

I still have some guests for a few more hours yet, so won't get much reading done today :/
Will get into it with gusto once everyone is gone though ;)

message 16409: by Jülie ☼♄  (new)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments I hope that's the end of the "local" neighbourhood fireworks, though I suspect not :( my poor little dog has been a nervous wreck with random explosions going off here at irregular intervals...day and night for more than a week already.
When all of the fireworks started going off, great flocks of birds were sent flying from their trees, screaming (parrots) as they went back and forth looking for a safe place to roost before being scattered again by another burst of explosions.
I really feel for all the creatures during these times, I think its time we thought about having laser light shows instead of explosives.

I wasn't tired when I finally got into bed either Kathryn...read until 1.30 then thought I'd better turn off the light, as morning would be here before I knew it..and it was!

Laser lights would solve all this people getting burned from illegal fireworks - and legal ones this time too apparently! A much better idea Jools!

Same here :)

After midnight, just before I went to sleep, I changed to 'currently reading' my
first two books for 2015 - forgot about the date thing so it looks like I startedthem yesterday - I haven't actually picked either of them up yet! Just went to change the start date and Goodreads hasn't even got a 2015 as a choice yet :)

Obviously we southerly world dwellers are too advanced for US databases ;)

Sally906 | 90 comments The monsoonal trough came down overnight and have woken up to torrential rain - woo hoo!!!!

The rains have arrived late this year and everyone has agreed that this has been the worst build-up EVER!

Nothing to do, nowhere to go, pouring rain - I think it is a hot chocolate and reading day!

That's good Sally! You guys have been hanging out for the rain, haven't you! So glad you're getting it - at least one part of the country is!!! Reading day sounds awesome;) I'm washing - it's HOT!!! At least it'll dry easily:)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Yes, I seem to remember hanging out for the new GR reading challenge icon last year and it only popped up about 5 or 6pm on New Year's Day! I think that must be when midnight GR-time rolls around!! And we won't be able to change the date for any books we start reading today to set them to Jan 1 until after that time, I think...

Enjoy your day of reading with the rain in the background, Sally! I'm washing too, Brenda, and trying to stay cool under the fan between trips to the laundry!!

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments Happy New Year everyone! I finished up 2014 by working through the proofreading for the paperback of Frontier Resistance, and then watching movies with our adult kids while sipping champagne cocktails and munching on a variety of yummy snacks.

There was quite a lot of random banging and shouting around midnight here, and today is hot and sticky.

Have just dipped into The Slow Regard of Silent Things and I can tell it's going to be fantastic!

What a great way to finish the year Leonie! Editing your book, catching up with the kids and reading a great story :)

Happy New a Year everyone!

We've just got back from a picnic in the Sydney Botanic Gardens. It was hot but a nice sea breeze made it comfortable and it just such a great view. Our WA rellies head home tomorrow so it was their last outing with us.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9994 comments Drove today to Canberra and back with my local sister and our cousin, to see my Canberra sister. On our return, we went for our traditional New Year's Day Swim.
My sister was explaining this to our 91 year old Mum on Tuesday: "We always go for a swim on New Years Day, and sometimes that's the only day Marianne goes in the water all year." says my sister.
Mum, sharp as ever, says "well, she must come out of the water a lot lighter then....."

so today, when I'd had enough of the lovely refreshing surf at Woonona, I said to my sister, I think I'm light enough now.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Hello, Marianne. Don't you love Mum quips:D

NYE festivities are over, thankfully. My big ninny,Moses (boxer), can come out from under the bed now! In four days my eldest nephew will be 30. Gosh that makes me feel really old:P

7.45am Yikes, it's heading for 39C here today. I'm off to start watering my garden.

Is the humidity high in your neck of the woods? It's extreme here - didn't drop below 25 overnight which made it difficult to sleep - apart from the b**** dog we are dogsitting!

message 16441: by Marianne (last edited Jan 01, 2015 04:20PM) (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9994 comments yes, we are on the coast, so if it's hot it's humid. Not as hot here today (<27C) as in the highlands yesterday (34C), but a lot more uncomfortable because of that humidity.

message 16442: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments The heat/humidity is awful here in Brisbane - and although I'm still whinging about it, at least you expect it in January, not in November!! However, with it starting in November, it means it has been HOT for about 2 months now!!

I'm also house/dog-sitting at the moment, and my babies here are sweet. They are pugs, so I can't decide if they're cutely ugly or uglily cute!! But they're mostly quiet, and certainly aren't keeping me awake at night, the darlings!!

I think little Holly is missing her Mum! She barked on and off all night, then when the thunder started about 2.30am she was clawing at the door trying to get in. I wouldn't let her in because of our dog - not fair!! But now we are existing on about 2 hours sleep:(

The humidity has really been doing my head in. It wipes me out and doesn't help that I don't get to work in aircon, but a big, hot shed that never cools down. I have never felt so worn out. I am usually up by 6;30am but today I slept in to almost 9am! Makes me want to go back to Europe.
Kathryn, you lucky duck! I adore puggies! They are most definitely so dang cute and their personalities are wonderful! Next round of dogs my hubby and I want to have are a Pugalier or a French Bulldog and I'd love a wolfhound cross or another mastiff-type dog. The crazy dog lady in me wants 9 or more dogs at once. Lol.

I know - the heat is really draining - and I don't tend to sleep late because I get up to go to the gym while it is at least a little cooler than later in the day and if I wasn't doing that, I don't think I'd find it easy to sleep late anyway because of the heat. And this summer it just seems worse than other years...

And yes, French bulldogs are very cute! I also like Cavalier King Charles spaniels, but I'm not sure about crossed with a pug... I used to want a dog of my own, but have never had one due to a combination of factors. Anyway, having a dog would definitely curtail my freedom somewhat, and having done some dog-sitting lately I've realised that they're probably more work than I could be bothered with!! And the puppy training stage would be even worse!! I don't think I'd have the patience!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Michael, I can commiserate with you. We had 42C with winds of 70kph; a horrid north wind blowing heat relentlessly. The township of Moyston which is 2.5hrs north of me was under imminent danger last I heard; the fire warning there had been upped to 'catastrophic'.
