I don't know how many of you remember my reading A Century of Wisdom: Lessons from the Life of Alice Herz-Sommer, the World's Oldest Living Holocaust Survivor by Caroline Stoessinger about Alice Herz-Sommer, who was the oldest living survivor of the holocaust. She had turned 110 years old on 26/11/13.

I do remember that Brenda. That's so sad, although she did live a long life. Your review was wonderful and her story really does sound very well worth reading. I may have to add it now, after all. It's one that I resisted putting on my TBR but did keep thinking about.

It's not terribly long and I picked my copy up from the library Elaine. I was initially shocked to read she had died, but of course she had had a very long life. I hope you enjoy it when and if you read it:)

Of course it's sad and a shock regardless of age, especially considering the timing. I actually just this moment reserved a copy from the library and I'm first in line so I guess I'll be reading it sooner than I thought. It seems right to read it now. :)

Thought I might check in again since I have a bit of time on my hands. We are currently on board a ship off the coast of Norway - actually at this moment tied up in a little port some where waiting out a storm. Apparently there are nineteen metre waves out there so we are best off where we are for a while. Trouble is we all have planes to catch at the other end of this trip and it looks like we may not make them! Still have five books left on my kindle and I am making my way through the ship's library. It's a hard life.

Oh, I'm jealous, Phrynne!

My excitement for the evening was going to see Frances Whiting at the library talking about writing her debut novel, Walking on Trampolines. She was funny, as I expected, and interesting to listen to, also as I expected. I haven't read the book yet, but it's on my list - even more so after hearing her speak about it!!

But somehow this doesn't compare to a trip to Norway - even sitting on a ship waiting for a storm to abate sounds quite romantic - as long as you're nice and snug!

As a sea Captains daughter the sea is my second home - trust me being tied up is much better than 19 m high waves - even for seasoned travelers!!!

yep snug on a cruise ship with a library and staff to wait on you hand and foot. I can think of worse places to be :)

Hope if you don't make your deadline at the airport the airline company you're with can re-plane you quickly.

I have just finished bottling my annual batch of homemade sauce! It's a huge job - I started at 9am - but there's lots of "blank" space in between while it simmers for hours! Now I have loads of dishes (which I'll get to soon) plus a backache! lol

But the family loves it:)

I actually read Robyn's book a lot of years ago, I can't remember why or who recommended it to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surprised when I saw the reprinted book and the fact that they had made it into a movie. I wonder how true to the book it was...

Oh that's good. I got my copy from the library so hadn't checked, but it's been "revamped" as the cover is different to the original one. But it's great she had a lot of input...you would enjoy the book I think Michael:)

Update! We eventually sailed out through 6 metre waves which was bad enough! We went to bed and slept through the worst of it. Luckily neither of us get sea sick. In London now and the hotel floor still seems to be moving....

Quickest way to get your land legs is to walk outside. Take a long stroll and eventually your brain will figure out you're not on the water :)

I read this years ago, when I was helping my Uncle and his mate break and train camels, so it was very topical for us at the time. We then took 8 half broken camels on a 600km round trip - mostly just walked them with cars as a training exercise, but occasionally rode the better broken ones - in the Pilbara. It would have been around 1988 I think. Made our own camel saddles and had two showers in three weeks!

It's a fascinating book, and I'd really like to see the movie. And of course, I rather like camels :)
